It's spelt 'marshmAllow' where's does the 'E' sound come from?! It really grates on me.

I also just the use of a soft 'X' in Prezzo. As in saying it prezzzzo, and not with the same hard z as Pizza.

What are yours?

Not a pronunciation thing, but people on MN who use Envy when they are angry and should be using the Angry really wind me up. It's really not that hard - or shouldn't be - to understand the difference

Angry

^ See??

FuzzyWizard · 17/12/2016 22:15

Theproblemofsusan- you've just reminded of another one that really grates on me. I'm not even sure if my pronunciation is the correct one but when I say latte the first syllable rhymes with fat, but so many people round here seem to pronounce it so that the first syllable rhymes with fart. It drives me mad. I don't even care if they are correct and I'm wrong it just sounds dreadful. Grin

Sallystyle · 17/12/2016 22:20

I say marsh- mellow

If I'm being real common I might even say marsh-mella

I pronounce a lot of words wrong. The majority of the time it's because I really really struggle with certain words.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 17/12/2016 22:21

My mum calls prosecco "that preskewtio thing" I think she is possibly confusing it with the word prosciutto or possibly she is mad.

mysistersimone · 17/12/2016 22:33

Watching Countdown and hearing 'continant please' instead on 'consonant' grips. My. Shit. Every time Xmas Angry

RueDeDay · 17/12/2016 22:45

Another Kiwi here... For me, pear, pare, pair, peer and pier are all homophones. I can't hear or pronounce a difference between Ellen and Allan. You stand no chance at all with 'mallow'.

Admiralclingus · 17/12/2016 22:57

We call them mashy-mos.....

mygorgeousmilo · 17/12/2016 23:34

Jalapeño with the hard 'J' sound. Arghhhh!! Oh, and at a party "ooh, I've never had AXparagus before".... errr, it's not bloody axparagus, and how have you not eaten it before??!

angelikacpickles · 17/12/2016 23:48

I am reeling after discovering that Nutella is pronounced newtella

I know they pronounce it like this in the US, but who says it's right? They say Nut-ella on the ads and surely since the premise is that it's made from nuts, nut-ella makes sense?

CrumpetandSausage · 17/12/2016 23:52

Dd calls them marsh-oo-mallows. I will be sad when she learns the correct word.

thecolonelbumminganugget · 17/12/2016 23:58

The problem with moet, 'mow-ette' / 'mow-ay' is that if you say mow-ette people will snigger or "correct" you to mow-ay and you sound like a total bellened explaining the Dutch pronunciation. Best just to order gin instead.

LucyBabs · 18/12/2016 00:09

3cats That sounds more like an Australian accent than American..

ungoogleable how do you pronounce Prosecco?
I'm not from the UK, how is St Pancreas pronounced? I assume like the organ Smile

liz70 · 18/12/2016 00:13

Lucy it's St. Pancras, not pancreas. No "e".

2016Bambino · 18/12/2016 00:14

I went to the Moët vineyard in Australia and they said there it is pronounced Mo-et not Mo-ay as it is a Dutch name.
'Chor-it-so' drives me bonkers. It's Spanish, not Italian. I lived in Bilbao for a while and there it's pronounced 'chor-ee-tho'.

Yesitsmeagain · 18/12/2016 00:17

Moët vineyard in Australia???? AUSTRALIA... as in most definitely NOT Champagne?

WTAF - how does that work?!!

UnGoogleable · 18/12/2016 00:18

ungoogleable how do you pronounce Prosecco?

With an S. Pro-sec-co

Yesitsmeagain · 18/12/2016 00:19

pRehaps bugs me. It's said all the ducking time on TV and radio(as well as TL) Why... just fucking why??

Yesitsmeagain · 18/12/2016 00:20

Proe-sec-coe

PinkSwimGoggles · 18/12/2016 00:21

but there is no difference (to my ears) between e and a in marshmallow?

UnGoogleable · 18/12/2016 00:23

Marshmellow is the correct pronunciation of Marshmallow

On that link above, I hear it as MarshmAllow. Just with an American accent the A is less pronounced.

Just like 'Maam' in American sounds softer / more like an E than with an English accent.

UnGoogleable · 18/12/2016 00:24

Marshmallow as in Fallow

Not Marshmellow as in Fellow.

Fallow and Fellow sound completely different to me.

AuntJane · 18/12/2016 00:24

Sorbet.

Arabic word, not French, with the same origin as sherbet. When did you ever buy a "sherbay fountain"?

UnGoogleable · 18/12/2016 00:26

The one that really bugs me, and I know it's an Afro-Caribbean cultural thing, but still annoys the hell out of me is

"Aks" instead of "Ask"

I get that there are differences in pronounciation, but to switch consonants around in a word makes no sense to me.

Same thing with Stevie Wonder when he sings Mr Knowitall. He says "Mistra" and it bugs the hell out of me!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 18/12/2016 00:28

I'm going to help you out...

MarshmAllow
ProSecco
BrusKetta
MoeT (Mowet)
