It's spelt 'marshmAllow' where's does the 'E' sound come from?! It really grates on me.

I also just the use of a soft 'X' in Prezzo. As in saying it prezzzzo, and not with the same hard z as Pizza.

What are yours?

Fuzzywizard rest assured the Italian nation would thank you, as you pronounce latte exactly as they do. Wink

"Nutella" (another Italian brand) is pronounced "nutella", exactly as you'd imagine from its spelling. Most definitely not "newtella".

"bruschetta" has a K but a short U.

whowantsadog · 18/12/2016 08:03

My DH consistently says "them" instead of "those" ("Look at them kids" etc) and that drives me bat shit as I'm sure he KNOWS and is just doing it to annoy me. It's an uphill battle to keep the DC on the right track Xmas Hmm

CaoNiMerrilyOnHigh · 18/12/2016 08:06

Surely the best/worst is "pro-NOUNC-iation".

User543212345 · 18/12/2016 08:06

I love you all. I've just read most of this thread to DH to prove I'm right.

An exDP had an insufferable sister who was bragging one day about how one of her friends at the BBC used to check the pronOunciation of difficult words with her before broadcast. How I laughed at that.

FuzzyWizard · 18/12/2016 08:34

Vintage I'm very pleased to hear that!

ohmygodyouguys · 18/12/2016 08:43

There's a guy at my work who insists on pronouncing it saus-ah-ges. I really really want to punch him. For this and many other reasons.

HammerToFall · 18/12/2016 08:46

I was listening to a talking book the other day where the narrator pronounced accusatory as accuse-a-Tory rather than acc-usay-Terry I couldn't get it out of my head all day!!

ohmygodyouguys · 18/12/2016 08:46

Oh and forget the Pry-mark/Preemark debate. For him it's Pree-mar-shay. Tosser.

HammerToFall · 18/12/2016 08:49

And in the same book she pronounced riffled as rif-eld rather than ry-feld.

Katedotness1963 · 18/12/2016 08:55

Nutella= noo-tella. That's how they pronounced it in Italy.

Albadross · 18/12/2016 09:08

I didn't know 'festive' was pronounced like this:

...if I judge you for saying 'marshmEllow'
Albadross · 18/12/2016 09:09

My boss says 'We're' and I're' (?) instead of 'We'll' and 'I'll'.

He writes them that way too...Hmm

JennyOnAPlate · 18/12/2016 09:10

I say noo-tella. I've spent a lot of time in France over the years and that's how they pronounce it.

sunnysidesucks · 18/12/2016 09:18

I'm just glad my kids are getting older and don't wear PATENT shoes anymore because it drives me mad how many people say 'paintent'!

ImprovingMyMH · 18/12/2016 09:22

Oh, what about novel? I say, well, novel, but Radio 4 presenters says nuvel Angry. I hate it!

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 18/12/2016 09:25

I would pronounce accusatory as accuse-a-tory, accuse-ay-terry sounds totally wrong to me.

dontpokethebear · 18/12/2016 09:28

DH say cor-reet-so for chorizo Angry

dontpokethebear · 18/12/2016 09:29

And I sound like a caveman Blush

Lovelybangers · 18/12/2016 09:30

Idyll.

Id ill

Not eye dill

God, I hope I am correct on this one Xmas Grin

ImprovingMyMH · 18/12/2016 09:30

What's Terry done now Grin?

VintagePerfumista · 18/12/2016 09:30

Italian has diphthongs but no long vowels, unlike English and pronounce nutella with an Italian /u/ which may sound slightly longer than a British one, so it may sound like noo-tella, but it is definitely only a short vowel, not a long "oo" one.

The Italian /u/ is a very "pure" /u/ (like the "oo" in book) hence it sounding different to an English U like the one in "nut".

OliviaStabler · 18/12/2016 09:32

I would pronounce accusatory as accuse-a-tory, accuse-ay-terry sounds totally wrong to me.

Me too.

AtSea1979 · 18/12/2016 09:33

Latte is pronounced latty? Well damn it, what coffee has Costa been serving me for past 20 years?

Bundao · 18/12/2016 09:35

I've been ripped on here for writing expresso. But in Portuguese that's how it's spelt. It's said espresso but not writen that way. I think it might have an X in Spanish too. Not sure.

I get irrational about people saying Salvador Dalí as Daaarli, it's Dal-í ffs.

São Paulo, I love hearing British people butchering that. You get San Paulo Sow Paulo and So Paulo. Amuses me greatly.

VintagePerfumista · 18/12/2016 09:40

Latte= "lattei"

It's usually the A that causes the problems, not the ending.
