To think this is not a 'misunderstanding' due to our nationalities

A mother at my international school is constantly mimicking my accent and mocking things I say and calling me posh. I can take that but recently at a party she said to my DH whilst having a fag outside with him 'I'm great at wanking' Having confronted her after she said something else that really pissed me off she claims it was a 'joke' and she didn't mean it. She said she always ' jokes'about peoples accents. She said that she didn't realize English people were so different to Australians??? Do you buy it??? Still fuming.

YANBU. She sounds like a bit of a dick tbh. I don't think it can be blamed on cultural differences.

CaoNiMerrilyOnHigh · 11/12/2016 12:31

"great at wanking"!!

WorraLiberty · 11/12/2016 12:32

I'm confused about the 'wanking'?

Was it meant to sound like another word?

emwantsbiscuits · 11/12/2016 12:35

YANBU. She sounds very rude.

redexpat · 11/12/2016 12:36

She sounds delightful. I would tell her straight that you dont care whether she thinks its funny or not but mocking someones accent or calling them posh is actually quite hurtful and would she stop. Add pointed stare.

Its only a joke if everyone laughs.

MrsDustyBusty · 11/12/2016 12:37

She sounds pretty horrible. I can't imagine that you are obliged to have much to do with her.

Boolovessulley · 11/12/2016 12:38

I think she has overstepped the mark with the wanking comment.

Is it possible for both you and your dh to give her a very wide birth?

awkward91 · 11/12/2016 12:39

YANBU, it's not a misunderstanding, that woman is an arse.

Boredbeforeievenbegan · 11/12/2016 12:42

She's a wanker, admitted it herself.

hippyhippyshake · 11/12/2016 12:52

Are you sure she didn't wink at him and say I'm great at winking? I get very confused when I hear a strong NZ accent and have to internally translate.

I'm great at wanking
Wtf?

brasty · 11/12/2016 13:02

Surely the wanking comment is a misunderstanding?
I wonder because she has talked about you being posh if she is having a go at you because of your class/wealth, and that this is nothing to do with nationality?

BratFarrarsPony · 11/12/2016 13:02

You know waht , life is too short just tell her to fuck off.

OurBlanche · 11/12/2016 13:03

So this ultra classy woman takes the piss out of your accent and offers your DH a handjob whilst having a fag...

Easy solution, laugh at her.

She probably has her own self esteem issues but, basically, who gives a fuck? You don't know her well enough to be careful of her bleeding heart.

Avid as much as possible and, if she does it again: tinkly laugh, head tilt and a cheerful bellow of "What are you like?"

pipsqueak25 · 11/12/2016 13:05

i've been described as posh and a snob, so what why do people take that as am insult ? the person who has called me that obviously thinks i'm better than them Grin that's cool.
as for this woman, i wouldn't give the head space she sounds vulgar and stupid, did dh not pick her up on her comment at the time ?
she's good at wanking ? does she do it for a living ???

JassyRadlett · 11/12/2016 13:05

I'm Australian. She's an unpleasant loon.

Hippy, maybe understandable for NZ but there is no Australian accent I know where winking could be misheard as wanking by a speaker of British English.

ChocChocPorridge · 11/12/2016 13:09

At my (well, my kids) international school I've never heard anyone take the mick out of anyone's accent - because it's rude, and why would you - for a start, you'd never have time, there are barely two people from the same country in either of my kids classes!

She's rude. Avoid her.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 11/12/2016 13:16

I've been attacked for having a "posh" voice. It's ridiculous and says far more about them than it does about you.

Steer clear but if she tries it again I'd say something. Possibly something alone the lines of "You say mocking accents is normal where you come from? Well where I come from it's considered rude, and I would like you to stop."

YANBU.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 11/12/2016 13:17

What an utterly bizarre thing to say

Winking doesn't sound like wanking

And why would you say I'm very good at winking Confused

Next time you see her tell her not to be embarrassed by her faux pas and all is forgotten while stifling a giggle

user1477282676 · 11/12/2016 13:25

I live in Australia and as a Brit, I've never met ONE Aussie woman who would think any of that was ok. She's just an arse.

Storebaelt · 11/12/2016 13:27

Poor woman. Her behaviour indicates a low social intelligence.

Who on earth thinks that's an appropriate thing to say to someone?

Someone with a low social intelligence.

Saffronesque · 11/12/2016 13:32

If you hadn't mentioned the international school part, I would have said that I know this woman Sad ...and avoid her like the plage.

NB I know enough Australians who DON'T behave like this to not put it down to cultural differences.
