Sent somebody a cheque for their birthday. They 'lost it' and asked me to send another. Prehaps I was foolish to do so, but I did. Now, both cheques have come out of my fucking bank account!!!!

I guess there was a good reason why you didn't cancel the first one....?

Imnotaslimjim · 11/12/2016 11:47

Get in touch with your bank and ask for it to be recalled, I think you can still do that.

Sparlklesilverglitter · 11/12/2016 11:47

Why didn't you cancel the first cheque?

OohhThatsMe · 11/12/2016 11:47

Is this a relative, OP?

iwantavuvezela · 11/12/2016 11:47

That takes cash the cheque to a new level! Can you speak to them and ask for a refund. Bloody cheeky though

VeryFuckingPissedOff · 11/12/2016 11:48

Cancelling the first one completely slipped my mind. Yes, a relative. I didn't really think about it.

No cheques of any description from now on.

EatTheCake · 11/12/2016 11:49

Why was the first cheque not cancelled? It was "lost" so needed cancelling. It's easy enough to do

Apart from asking the person why they cashed both and asking for the money back, I don't really know what you can do about it if they refuse to give the money back. At the end of the day you did send them 2 cheques

BertrandRussell · 11/12/2016 11:50

Sure it wasn't an oversight? Cock up is more likely than conspiracy.

Lweji · 11/12/2016 11:50

Definitely cancel the first cheque. Grin

More seriously, I'd mention to them that both cheques had been cashed. Or something along the lines of the first cheque having been found.

Depending on the reply, it could be the last time they got a present from me. Certainly not for the next Christmas or birthday, for which I'd point out they already got a gift.

Maudlinmaud · 11/12/2016 11:50

That is so cheeky!

gamerchick · 11/12/2016 11:51

Well that's next years present taken care of Wink

Next time cancel the cheque. I assume your relative had a few cheques and didn't really pay attention to them?

Jellybean83 · 11/12/2016 11:51

Tell them you want reimbursed for the value of one of the cheques. So cheeky.

Pinkheart5915 · 11/12/2016 11:52

I wouldn't of sent another without cancelling the "lost" one

How much was the cheque for? are we talking £20 If so maybe your relative has just made a mistake
If we are taking £100+ maybe not so much a mistake on your relatives part

Call them say you've noticed both cheques were cashed and you know they obviously made a mistake so can they return the money?

Cel982 · 11/12/2016 11:52

Why was the first cheque not cancelled?

Because it was someone she obviously loved enough to send a generous birthday present to, she didn't expect to be robbed Hmm

BertrandRussell · 11/12/2016 11:53

What did she say when you rang her up and said she'd made a mistake?

Janek · 11/12/2016 11:54

I thought it cost money to cancel a cheque. Like £12 or something. If i sent money to a relative and they lost the cheque i would trust them not to cash both. If it was a birthday present, then don't send one next year?

QuackDuckQuack · 11/12/2016 11:54

Don't you have to pay a fee to cancel a cheque? I wouldn't expect to have to cancel a cheque that a relative lost.

EatTheCake · 11/12/2016 11:55

*Why was the first cheque not cancelled?

Because it was someone she obviously loved enough to send a generous birthday present to, she didn't expect to be robbed hmm*

But the birthday person said the cheque was "lost" so it could of been anywhere "lost" and from a security point of view I would always cancel the "lost" cheque even if I'd wrote it to the queen sodding mother

OurBlanche · 11/12/2016 11:56

Have you spoken to her? What did she say?

Send her your bank details and ask her to transfer money back...

VeryFuckingPissedOff · 11/12/2016 11:58

I haven't texted/called relative yet as I wanted to see if I was BU first. The cheque was for £25, not very much but the boiler has just broke, and am rather skint at the moment! I think I'll go along the lines of 'I see you've found the first cheque then' and ask her for the money back.

OP posts:
DeepanKrispanEven · 11/12/2016 12:01

You need to check with her because it's possible that someone else stole the cheque and cashed it.

TaliDiNozzo · 11/12/2016 12:01

I would err on the side of this being a complete mistake from your relative. Definitely no need to jump to conclusions without at least speaking to them first.

I find it hard to believe a relative would rip you off intentionally, much less for the sake of £25.

ihatethecold · 11/12/2016 12:01

Were they both cashed by the original recipient?

OurBlanche · 11/12/2016 12:02

Don't ask her.... tell her! She hasn't done it by accident, she knows she has deposited 2 cheques!

Depending on how close you are, you could ask if she has done this to anyone else. SIL used to con us all out of money, we all bought her a nurses watch, money towards uniform etc. She drank the lot.

Playing silly buggers like this could be a sign that your relative is feeling financially insecure! That and she is selfish.
