Sent somebody a cheque for their birthday. They 'lost it' and asked me to send another. Prehaps I was foolish to do so, but I did. Now, both cheques have come out of my fucking bank account!!!!

Can you cancel the cheque Grin

moggle · 13/12/2016 10:21

Lol I was waiting for that. Yeah OP, why don't you cancel the cheque?

bluebellsparklypants · 13/12/2016 11:13

Speak to the bank see if the can recall it at all, it's worth speaking to your relative too as it may not of been them that cashed it , you never know
You could always put it as 'you've had your Christmas present early'!

But if you don't make enquiries you'll never know and it may just be a simple lack of communication that will alway leave a bad taste

And if you don't read the thread, YOU'LL never know that all this has already been dealt with, the OP has spoken to her relative, both cheques were cashed by the relative and the OP has offered it as an early xmas present. But yeah, helpful suggestions.

I lost a cheque once that was a present I just sucked it up , wouldn't have dreamt of going back and asking for another one to replace and if I did have that much cheek I certainly wouldn't accidentally deposit both. People are amazing

BertrandRussell · 13/12/2016 16:52

Did you tell the giver that you had lost it?

GravyAndShite · 13/12/2016 18:27

comingintomyown you lost to cheque you received as a gift but didn't tell the issuer that you had lost it? So you just didn't cash is as far as they would know.
That could actually be perceived as quite ungrateful or even insulting.

GravyAndShite · 13/12/2016 18:31

I always aim to deposit cheques within a week (maximum) of receiving them. It gives a me a negative impression of the recipient when I write a cheque that takes weeks and months to clear. I must project that as I wouldn't like someone to have that impression of me.

MrsRobinson79 · 13/12/2016 19:44

I wouldn't have had the brass neck to say I'd lost a cheque and could I be sent another one. I've received 2 cheques from relatives this year but made out to the wrong name (my husbands surname - which I haven't taken) and I didn't even ask for them to be resent. I thought it looked grabby.

BertrandRussell · 13/12/2016 20:07

So. The person who sent you the cheques has to a) make sure they've got enough money in the account to cover the cheques for the foreseeable future b) wonder why they weren't cashed- with an obvious possibility being that you couldn't be bothered because you thought the amount was too small..........

MrsRobinson79 · 13/12/2016 20:33

If that's aimed at me BertrandRussell I have to admit I'd not thought of it like that. I just thought it looked really rude phoning to say oh by the way you've sent the cheque to the wrong name could you please resend me my money. They weren't huge amounts so I'm sure they wouldn't have to keep checking they had enough in their account. Also I did thank them when I received the cheques (before I realised I couldn't cash them - I thought I'd be able to pay into our joint account as both our names are on this) so I didn't look totally ungrateful. I will be reminding them about my name before my birthday this year. They've always made them out to my actual name before so not sure what happened this year.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 13/12/2016 23:31

I love the comment up-thread about opening a fake bank account to cash the cheque - have you tried to open an account recently? They need everything up to and including the weight of your first born, and I've been trying to get signatories changed on an association account since bloody May ffs.

Effing money laundering prevention!

Sorry, back to the thread...

GravyAndShite · 14/12/2016 19:59

Mrsroninson I wouldn't have specifically asked for a new cheque to be written, but I would have made sure to mention why the original couldn't be cashed.

Especially as like you say it was a relatively small amount (although I'm not a fan of that logic either as I make it a habit not to presume about other people's finances) it could actually look like you were ungrateful and the amount was worth the hassle of cashing the cheque.
