to think you should only be given an Oscar for the female actor if you are female?

Or at least you've had surgery 'down there'?

And not just because you're gender fluid?

www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/oscars-2017-history-made-as-academy-considers-rupauls-drag-race-contestant-kelly-mantle-best-actor-a7466981.html

Kelly Mantle is a drag artist. Fair enough. Not the first male to do drag and not the first actor to play 'drag' in films - cue Tootsie and all that.

But to be up for an award in the male AND female actor award?

Do you think it's ok to be nominated in both categories, BowieFan?

SpeakNoWords · 10/12/2016 16:35

To be clear, I mean for the same role.

hazeyjane · 10/12/2016 16:42

The gender of a person is defined by their own beliefs and the way in which they choose to live their life.

Bollocks - gender is defined by society and the way in which those with more power would like those defined genders to live their lives.

hazeyjane · 10/12/2016 16:47

If the fabulous Julie Andrews was alive I wonder if she could ask to retrospectively try vying for best actor role as well as being nominated for best actress for Victor/Victoria.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 10/12/2016 16:48

But they haven't been nominated in both categories and highly unlikely that they would be. They have been submitted for consideration in both categories a) to promote the film, clever PR coup b) to double their chances in the male category. Am not keen on doubling the chances strategy same as I hate actors being submitted for both leading and supporting for the same role..and in the case of Catherine Zeta Jones requesting a category change which meant she effectively nicked Queen Latifah's Oscar but in this case, it probably won't work.
The actual nominations won't be out until January.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 10/12/2016 16:52

On a Spartacus themed derail the centenarian celebrated this week. He makes it to a hundred. Natalie Wood drowns aged 43.

BeattieBowRisenFromTheDead · 10/12/2016 16:52

hazey she died??!! Confused

SpeakNoWords · 10/12/2016 16:53

How does it double their chances in the male category?

I think I would identify as gender fluid if I was a young woman starting a career in acting, it would seem to open more doors than just being a woman.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 10/12/2016 17:01

In the same way if a movie submits more than one song, they might get a nomination thrown their way (especially by the Academy box tickers who might not have heard any of the submissions) in Enchanted's case in a poor field three best song noms (still lost on the night). An academy voter who has never seen the film submissions (and they do exist) might see Kelly Mantle's name twice on the submissions and go, ah must be a decent enough performance to be submitted twice, cross box. They don't all view the tapes or even the details.

hazeyjane · 10/12/2016 17:02

Bloody hell.....I truly thought she had died this year - huge apologies - she is still alive and fabulous!

ISaySteadyOn · 10/12/2016 17:03

No, Beattie, she's alive. Twas a hoax apparently.

But she should ask re: Victor/Victoria.

hazeyjane · 10/12/2016 17:04

It is being promoted as a 'history being made' moment - I will not be at all surprised if there is a double nomination....its all so 'on trend' and zeitgeisty.

RitchyBestingFace · 10/12/2016 17:06

YANBU but I think it's very unlikely a film with no international release date and co-starring Gary Busey and C. Thomas Howell Hmm will have a cat in hell's chance of being 'under consideration' for an Oscar.

This is also a relatively good year for female roles - there are plenty of big name actresses who will miss out.

amispartacus · 10/12/2016 17:09

Without wanting to tell someone how to live their life, Kelly Mantle does not seem to be genderfluid but rather seems to be a man who likes to dress up in drag and be 'outrageous'.

Granted that's only an impression based on the Twitter feed and on the fact that they are on Ru Paul's drag show and they perform as a drag artist. I'd love to see how they live on a day to day basis when not performing.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 10/12/2016 17:13

Indeed. Loads of big names Amy Adams, Street, Emma Stone, Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman, Ruth Negga....they are far far the frontrunners plus Oscars usually follow the globes so yeah, cat in hell's chance.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 10/12/2016 17:13

Streep. Autocorrect.

ageingrunner · 10/12/2016 17:17

Such bullshit. Does this person even want to be nominated as male and female? Shall women just give up and accept men are going to be us in anything exceptional, and we should just get on with firing our kids and doing housework? I'm so angry about this bullshit. Men can never be women and women can never be men.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/12/2016 17:18

Good god people I nearly had a heart attack reading "if Julie Andrews was still alive" Shock

ageingrunner · 10/12/2016 17:19

Not that there's anything unexceptional about raising children or doing housework!

hazeyjane · 10/12/2016 17:23

I am sorry, Cherry et al. I have asked HQ if they can change my post (and add in that I am a cockwomble). I was convinced it had happened - 2016 has been a shit year after all - but it was obviously a bad dream!

RitchyBestingFace · 10/12/2016 17:26

Also the Academy and other awards bodies recognises transgender and gender fluid roles within the category that fits the sex of the actor playing them.

So Jared won for Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club for playing MTF trans and Felicity Huffman was nominated for Best Actress for playing MTF Trans in Transamerica. Hillary Swank won Best Actress for Boys Don't Cry.

There's quite a firm precedent set already with trans roles. The issue for TAs is that the award level roles are rarely played by trans actors - which is a legitimate grievance.

For any film buffs interested. It is a non event though, the producers also sent a submission for Gary Busey. GARY BUSEY. Grin

BowieFanMk2 · 10/12/2016 17:31

SpeakNoWords

No, but that's not going to happen. It's just that the person would be eligible for both categories.

It's all crap anyway - a few years ago a dog nearly got nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and there's loads of actresses who have won/been nominated for Supporting Actress despite being the main/only female in the film.

It's all up to the studios anyway - they choose what category they want to lobby for. It's why Mark Rylance was in the supporting actor category despite being the co-lead. It was much tougher competition in the Leading Actor category, so they put him in the one with the best chances of winning.

TheMortificadosDragon · 10/12/2016 17:39

And Eddie Redmayne was nominated for best actor for The Danish Girl. The role starts as a man and becomes a transwoman, doesn't it (I've not seen the film).

The issue for TAs is that the award level roles are rarely played by trans actors - which is a legitimate grievance.

Is it? Actors get nominated for and win awards for acting. Should people get offended by Redmayne portraying Stephen Hawking? - FFS he's an Arts graduate not a physicist or mathematician!

LumelaMme · 10/12/2016 17:40

FFS.
Still Spartacus.
