Is one type of prostitute 'better' than another?

MelAncoly · 04/12/2016 19:29

Woman 1 - heroin addict, prostituing to feed her habit. Stands on street corners and will go with anyone that has the money.

Woman 2 - professional career, no drug habits or alcohol problems, doesn't even smoke. Simply wants extra money as she's saving to buy a house as she wants to get involved in property development. Her full time job doesn't pay enough to save for the kind of house she wants. She finds clients through an escourt agency.

Is there a difference between the two or are they both as bad as each other?

Also would you/have you ever considered it as a way of easy money?

And I think woman 1 is definitely being exploited. Woman 2 may be being exploited - the decision to sell sex, in my opinion, has a tendency to be underpinned by very low self-esteem and economic need, plus it tends to compound any existing mental health issues and foment new ones. Not a healthy way to make money.

chlmanibro · 04/12/2016 19:40

This reminds me of a book called Call Me Elizabeth where the woman turns to prostitution to pay her kids' school fees Grin

FannyWisdom · 04/12/2016 19:40

Maybe because they are choosing the job?

Choosing sex work is ok.
Being forced into it is never ok.

I would feel very sorry for anyone who thought it was easy money.

EatTheCake · 04/12/2016 19:40

I don't think either woman is bad for selling sex

I do however wonder if the woman with addiction really knows what she's doing, how much has the addiction taken over her mind.
I have worked with people with addiction in my job and at it's very worst they don't think straight and will do anything for the next fix

With women 2 as long as she's doing it for herself and has a stable mind, then that's her choice and she can do as she wishes with her own body

Suppermummy02 · 04/12/2016 19:42

The first one is being exploited, the second one is probably exploiting the man. I would consider it if I wanted easy money and fancied the man. It reminds me of being at uni where you would flirt with a man to get free drinks, the more free drinks he bought the further the flirting went.

FannyWisdom · 04/12/2016 19:42

BBC 3 programme?

If it's the 3 part on iplayer then that is the reality for street sex workers.

Hardshoulder · 04/12/2016 19:47

mummy, I suspect most female university students buy their own drinks, much the way male university students do. Hmm

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/12/2016 19:49

In what sense is number 2 exploiting the men?
After all, she's is probably working pretty hard, and no-one is forcing them to hire her. Doesn't that imply that men are somehow helpless little creatures who can't think for themselves?

ShowMePotatoSalad · 04/12/2016 19:49

Neither of them are "bad" and neither of them should be judged.

Having a drug addiction doesn't make you a bad person, and that's the only thing I can see that is make you differentiate between these two "types".

stitchglitched · 04/12/2016 19:52

Being honest I would judge the 2nd woman because I would feel she was chosing to contribute to an industry that is exploitative, damaging and dangerous to women who are more vulnerable, such as the 1st woman. She is peddling the 'high class, happy hooker' idea that many use to defend the men who use prostitutes and that impacts on the women lower down the rung. No choices are made in a vacuum.

NameChanger22 · 04/12/2016 19:52

Why isn't selling sex a bad thing? I don't understand why it's ok? Prostitution isn't just another job, how can it be? I think its degrading to women and men.

Both prostitutes are equally not right in my opinion, for different reasons.

BratFarrarsPony · 04/12/2016 19:54

" It reminds me of being at uni where you would flirt with a man to get free drinks, the more free drinks he bought the further the flirting went."

no suppermummy, just no. At uni I bought my own drinks, thank you.

Aliceandthewolves · 04/12/2016 20:04

Does woman 2 have a partner?

Namechangeemergency · 04/12/2016 20:06

I wouldn't judge either of them.
Neither is bad.
I would judge the men using them.
I would consider them both exploited although I wouldn't expect no 2 (and perhaps not no 1) to agree with me.

As long as we judge women who sell sex and ignore the men who pay for it the industry will continue to take lives.

expatinscotland · 04/12/2016 20:07

Eh? They're both just people who sell sex for money.

NovemberInDailyFailLand · 04/12/2016 20:12

I'd feel sadder for the drug-addicted woman. Neither woman is 'bad' or worthless. The difference is that the drug-addicted woman may feel she cannot get help or see a way out of her situation, should she want it.

Aliceandthewolves · 04/12/2016 20:19

I did it for a few months the money was addictive I didn't enjoy it. My partner at the time thought I was having sexy time. There wasn't much money floating around. When I asked him why did you introduce it to me his response was I was giving it away before I met him. I was 19 at the time I weren't sexually experienced at all. If woman 1 or even woman 2 had a partner expect shit.

Bailey101 · 04/12/2016 20:23

Neither woman is 'better' then the other, but woman 2 definitely has better prospects than woman 1 in that she's less likely to end up dead or with serious health issues through drug abuse.

YelloDraw · 04/12/2016 20:26

I've just been watching a documentary about drug addicted prostitues

MelAncoly the BBC one about holbeck in Leeds? Gripping viewing that, but sad.

Ruprecthepanbasher · 04/12/2016 20:29

suppermummy definitely happened when I was at Uni! In fact, a lot of things did that made me Grin Hmm and Blush

YelloDraw · 04/12/2016 20:30

To answer OPs question - I don't think either women are 'bad'.

I feel very very sorry for woman 1 and can't see that ending well. Woman 2 I would also worry about - still a high chance of something bad happening to her.

AddictedtoLove · 04/12/2016 20:31

Neither is "bad" -- or better, for that matter.

It is their customers rapists who are morally culpable.

Aliceandthewolves · 04/12/2016 20:35

There are young women who turn to escorting to pay their university fees. I think street prostitution is more dangerous but will the driver from the escort agency come to your rescue if you were in trouble.
