Farted on bus loudly, rude comments? AIBU to feel this was unnecessary?

This is an embarrassing post. On a bus (not crowded) yesterday. I had a dodgy stomach that appeared during the morning with loud farts.

Unfortunately during part of the journey I let off a loud and a bit smelly fart. Cue two women nearby one saying loudly "that's disgusting, who would smell like that, who would do that, dirty bitch" with a pointed look at me and looking away. I got off the bus feeling a bit embarrassed went to a toilet in a department store, went to the toilet and cleaned myself up (it wasn't as bad as I thought it was) got hand sanitizer and took some anti-diarrhoea pills.

AIBU to think this one woman was really rude or am I being over sensitive? It was one of those routemaster buses she said something about opening the windows but they don't have windows... That's not my fault and I had no idea my stomach was so bad.

Thanks

Its not polite to call people a dirty bitch but equally its not polite to fart in public in such a dramatic way

FFS I started laughing uncontrollably at this for some reason. I had in my head someone in full Shakespearean dress making a gigantic scene about letting one out. This lead to me laughing silently (or vibrating...) for about 30 seconds, until DH asked what was wrong with me and I had to explain, now we are both laughing at the prospect of a 'dramatic fart' in public. Then DD asked, we gave her the sanitized version and now shes skipping around repeating 'dramatic trump, dramatic floof' and so on.

I always thought I was more mature than most. Probably not.

nichito · 20/11/2016 16:27

hmc - The OP farted IN ERROR because she was unwell! What on earth does a statistically unusual phobia have to do with that? As unfortunate as such an affliction is, others can hardly be taken to task over it when their actions were unavoidable.

And I say that as someone who is currently suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum and cannot even open the refridgerator without vomiting profusely. It's deeply unfortunate but it's not other people problem! I could hardly lambast a stranger for having a sandwich in my presence.

Laiste · 20/11/2016 16:28

There's been a huge amount of moral censure on this thread (aimed at those who would struggle with offensive smells in public)

No, it's aimed at those who thinks it's ok to call people names.

Having a phobia doesn't make you incapable of good manners.

hollyatchristmas · 20/11/2016 16:28

Lol monkey that made me laugh as well dramatic farting

Jinglebellsandv0dka · 20/11/2016 16:32

I get travel sick on public transport and if I would have smelled that ill fart I would have spewed!

That would have been the bus ride from hell - an off fart and some one retching and barffing everywhere 🙈😷

Albadross · 20/11/2016 16:32

Come to think of it I was on a very long bus ride years ago (rural countryside) and some poor girl got on, who became violently ill shortly afterwards. She stood in the doorway vomiting down the steps next to the driver - it wasn't nice for the rest of us but my empathy was such that I put that aside and just felt awful for her. Eventually the bus driver stopped and let her off in the middle of nowhere. I often wonder how she got home (this was pre-mobiles). I also saw a lady being helped off a tube with a very obvious brown accident all down her trousers. In London you see things like that a lot because funnily enough we all have bodily functions that go awry unexpectedly, not because we choose to 'get on public transport with an upset stomach'. You should see it in noro-season!

Albadross · 20/11/2016 16:34

Nichito 'farting in error' made me laugh for some reason - makes it sound like she meant to cough but it came out the wrong end!

WaitrosePigeon · 20/11/2016 16:34

Apologies for calling you a poo troll OP Flowers

VoodooPeople · 20/11/2016 16:34

Flower

Fair enough. I'm of the generation that was brought up to say "pardon me" when belching or farting so I'd have automatically said something. It may not have prevented the abusive language without additional explanation I suppose.

hmcAsWas

I didn't realise there was a name for it!

It isn't a phobia - I'm not irrationally scared of the smell I just can't physically control my gag reflex.

Albadross · 20/11/2016 16:35

Just one more unashamedly gross story - our PE teacher was demonstrating star jumps. The inevitable happened mid jump, and she simply said 'it's perfectly natural children'. Styled it out Grin

HateMrTumble · 20/11/2016 16:40

This is why I haven't used public transport since my last day of school Confused

Amelie10 · 20/11/2016 16:47

Those women might have been rude but you were much ruder stinking out the place and just sitting there like its no ones business. You can't expect people to pretend that they're not disgusted if they are.

treaclesoda · 20/11/2016 16:54

Well, the smell of someone else's wind has sometimes brought me close to vomiting too. But it doesn't mean I get to be morally outraged that someone farted in public. I like to believe that most people are actually quite civilised - if someone (particularly a female, since there is a far bigger taboo about women having bodily functions than men) let's rip in public it's probably an accident and they are probably quite upset about it.

Janey50 · 20/11/2016 16:55

Can't believe some people's nasty attitude to someone that has an upset stomach. I mean, seriously, how many people go around letting rip on public transport just for the fun of it and to upset the people? They should get a grip and realise that more than likely the 'offender' cannot help it!

FlowerOfTheValley · 20/11/2016 16:56

Voodoo yes I would automatically have said "pardon me" too. OP may have thought she was too far away to say anything or thought they hadn't heard her until the comments were made.

Amelie OP was not choosing to pass wind, she felt unwell and it was involuntarily. She got out of the bus at the next stop to find a toilet. What else was she supposed to have done.

milkshakeandmonstermunch · 20/11/2016 16:59

Yes, she was being rude! I'd have 1) assumed you were unwell and 2) pretended not to notice. Hopefully she'll find herself in a similar position one day and see how it feels Grin

VoodooPeople · 20/11/2016 17:01

Flower It's so ingrained in me I even say pardon me when I'm alone in the house Blush Like the OP's errant fart, it just comes out involuntarily!

exWifebeginsat40 · 20/11/2016 17:13

only on mumsnet would finding other people's flatulence revolting escalate to 'YOU HATE EVERYONE WITH A STOMA GOSH'.

farts are grim. the end.

FabulouslyGlamourousFerret · 20/11/2016 17:13

AlexTwOtwats .... I wish we were acquainted in real life, I'd so be slipping lactulose into your coffee! Grin

liletsthepink · 20/11/2016 17:14

Op, I hope you are feeling better now. Given a choice I'd rather someone farted (or sharted) near me than vomited as it's a lot less messy.

MrsRyanGosling15 · 20/11/2016 17:15

Alexa and a few others, I so so hope you massively shit yourselves in public. I would honestly love that to happen. I think it's the least you deserve.

SporkLife · 20/11/2016 17:18

Wow lots of over reacting in this thread! She didn't walk over and deliberately fart in their faces, they were rude, you were ill, these things happen!
So many drama llamas in this thread though, you'd run upstairs gagging and holding your nose, really? Confused

FlowerOfTheValley · 20/11/2016 17:19

Voodoo me too!
