Just called in for a drink at a lively looking country pub, only to find the phrase 'I like my whiskey old and my women young' in large letters on the wall.

I understand that it's meant to be funny, but little digs at women and their appearance are apparent in too many places. I'm not outraged enough to 'complain', rather more disapointed that these views are so normalised. What do you think? Is it appropriate?

Define appropriate please. Most misused word on here imo

museumum · 19/11/2016 16:25

Not sure what "appropriate" means TBH. But a pub with that on the wall wouldn't be my choice of local. I would judge it as not somewhere I want to hang out and leave them to it.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2016 16:29

disapointed that these views are so normalised.

YANBU to that. Its a cheap sexist 'joke'. Not bad enough for anyone to complain, just go Hmm. I've seen much funnier sayings chalked up which avoid this sort of idiocy, so it is disappointing when you see this sort of thing persist, probably unthinkingly.

RozzlePops · 19/11/2016 16:33

It says women not girls. Get over it.

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2016 16:37

Appropriate means suitable or proper in the circumstances. Op is asking if others think the motto is suitable to be displayed in a public bar.

It's the sort of hackneyed bollocks I hate seeing, but it isn't what I'd call inappropriate.

Sparlklesilverglitter · 19/11/2016 16:38

Gave me a chuckle actually

EatTheCake · 19/11/2016 16:40

I like it! Grin

I also like the pub here that has a sign outside " Husband day care. We all know men hate shopping so leave them here with us"

BeattieBowRisenFromTheDead · 19/11/2016 16:41

It marginalises women. YANBU.

ohmywhatamisaying · 19/11/2016 16:42

Your life must be a constant hell if this kind of bollocks winds you up, OP.

Dozer · 19/11/2016 16:42

Sexist tripe.

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 19/11/2016 16:42

I have to say, i'd be more bothered by:
"Husband day care. We all know men hate shopping so leave them here with us" than the "joke" in the OP.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 19/11/2016 16:43

I like this one!

Mum2jenny · 19/11/2016 16:47

More offended by the 'whiskey', it should be whisky, as the only good stuff is from Scotland.

Five2ate · 19/11/2016 16:47

A pub serving food could have

'I like my sandwiches filled with tongue and my men well hung'

Grin
rslsys · 19/11/2016 16:50

The quote is ascribed to Errol Flynn

Mrsemcgregor · 19/11/2016 16:53

It suggests that older women are not as good. It's sexist and ageist.

chitofftheshovel · 19/11/2016 16:55

Damn mum you beat me to it. No self-respecting land lord would write whiskey.

AChristmasCactus · 19/11/2016 16:57

It's shit. When 50% of your potential customers are women, it's a stupid thing to scribble all over a wall.

Halloweensnake · 19/11/2016 17:00

Sick of sexist crap designed to make us feel shit

"It suggests that older women are not as good. It's sexist and ageist"

I tend to agree. I'm uncomfortable with these sorts of "jokes" so I'd go to a pub where the landlord wasn't such an obvious arsehole. I already feel that as a middle aged woman my "worth" has deminished because youth is no longer on my side, I certainly don't need this sort of shite reminding me I may have a point.

Jaimx86 · 19/11/2016 17:11

It says women not girls. Get over it. I'm in my twenties and look younger than my years meaning that I get called girl more than woman. It's not me that's personally offended, but don't think it's right to dismiss older women. I was just shocked to see the comment so blantently displayed when it is offensive to a large demographic.

BeingATinselTwatItsABingThing · 19/11/2016 17:12

I'd read it and go "Ok, whatever!" I try not to get worked up over stuff like that.

I bought my DP a wall sign that says "Chocolate, Coffee, Men. Some things are better rich!" But that's because his name is Rich so...

Jaimx86 · 19/11/2016 17:13

For TeaBelle: suitable or proper in the circumstances.

OP posts:
BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 19/11/2016 17:13

Get a bit of chalk out and scribble 'I like my cider fizzy and my men busy (in the kitchen)'
