Just called in for a drink at a lively looking country pub, only to find the phrase 'I like my whiskey old and my women young' in large letters on the wall.

I understand that it's meant to be funny, but little digs at women and their appearance are apparent in too many places. I'm not outraged enough to 'complain', rather more disapointed that these views are so normalised. What do you think? Is it appropriate?

Not sure what "appropriate" means TBH. But a pub with that on the wall wouldn't be my choice of local. I would judge it as not somewhere I want to hang out and leave them to it.

YANBU to that. Its a cheap sexist 'joke'. Not bad enough for anyone to complain, just go . I've seen much funnier sayings chalked up which avoid this sort of idiocy, so it is disappointing when you see this sort of thing persist, probably unthinkingly.

Appropriate means suitable or proper in the circumstances. Op is asking if others think the motto is suitable to be displayed in a public bar.

I tend to agree. I'm uncomfortable with these sorts of "jokes" so I'd go to a pub where the landlord wasn't such an obvious arsehole. I already feel that as a middle aged woman my "worth" has deminished because youth is no longer on my side, I certainly don't need this sort of shite reminding me I may have a point.

It's not me that's personally offended, but don't think it's right to dismiss older women. I was just shocked to see the comment so blantently displayed when it is offensive to a large demographic.

I'd read it and go "Ok, whatever!" I try not to get worked up over stuff like that.
