Just called in for a drink at a lively looking country pub, only to find the phrase 'I like my whiskey old and my women young' in large letters on the wall.

I understand that it's meant to be funny, but little digs at women and their appearance are apparent in too many places. I'm not outraged enough to 'complain', rather more disapointed that these views are so normalised. What do you think? Is it appropriate?

A bar where I used to live had a big sign outside saying "ROCK OUT WITH YOUR COCK OUT". The French restaurant across the street put one up saying "Rock in with your coquine". Lolz.

Murphysgirl · 19/11/2016 19:08

FGS, it's a well known quote, it's in a pub, they sell whisky. Some people must spend a lot of time being offended!

KathArtic · 19/11/2016 19:18

lively looking country pub sounds like plenty of other people were enjoying themselves then, despite the quote. Maybe you were just in the wrong establishment.

Jaimx86 · 19/11/2016 19:23

Whoops - I meant lovely looking. I'm surprised so many people are completely okay with this.

Cao, that's pretty witty if the French restaurant!

thelostboy · 19/11/2016 19:33

The OPs quote is jaded, and dated. But it's no worse than the "Men to the left as women are always right" sign later.

GrumpyOldBag · 19/11/2016 19:37

Nope, I don't like it either and wouldn't give the pub my custom.

And I'd probably tell them why as well.

Herhighness · 19/11/2016 19:38

I'd be too busy ordering/drinking to read quotes on the ruddy wall.

divineinterruption · 19/11/2016 19:40

YANBU. It's unnecessary, unfunny and some women may feel slightly offended by it. If they had added some context, like who the quote was from or if it was a small sign next to old whiskies, then maybe I'd be like ok yeah. But without context it just seems like it's the owner's opinion about women.

cosytoaster · 19/11/2016 19:43

YANBU - sexist and sleazy

tibbawyrots · 19/11/2016 19:49

CaoNiMao Brilliant! Love that sort of humour. :)

starchildareyoulistening · 19/11/2016 19:52

It would put me off going back to that pub. I think people who scoff at the idea of being offended by a sign need to look at the bigger picture. On its own it may just be a harmless "funny" quote, but you have to consider how it fits in to the context of our society. Being fine with jokes like this makes it safe and normal to value women less as they get older, reinforcing the idea that a woman's worth is determined by her sexual attractiveness. When we grow up surrounded by these things, each one adding its own tiny contribution to the overall message, we end up more readily accepting the bigger injustices - from the ridiculous standards for actresses (nubile 28 year olds being cast as the wife of a middle-aged Homer Simpson type husband!) to female presenters losing their jobs to younger models, to the disgusting vitriol directed at people like Mary Beard, to the trend of unrealistic photoshopping destroying the self-esteem of women and young girls to the point of contributing towards mental health issues/eating disorders. You can try to draw a line between what is bad enough to be offended by and what is not worth it, but in reality it's all links in the same chain. So yeah, I would be offended by this sign because it represents something much bigger and more sinister.

youarenotkiddingme · 19/11/2016 20:03

I see things like this in pubs sometimes. I kinda read but don't digest.
I tend to go in, order a drink and then socialise. As long as the drinks are reasonably priced and food good I'm happy.

I must be half of what's wrong with this world Grin but I don't even like the quotes!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/11/2016 20:07

Well, I'm offended by it. I'm also not too impressed by this remark upthread: I think it's meant as a joke, that whisk(e)y improves with age and people tend not to? What on earth does that mean? I'm 55 and while I have lots of grey hairs and my skin doesn't have the elasticity and youthful glow it had when I was 25, in many other significant respects I consider I've improved with age, and the same goes for my husband (who is even older).

Sexism and ageism don't amuse me. In both cases they're not restricted to unfunny jokes in pubs. They cause serious disadvantage for the groups affected.

KateAdiesEarrings · 19/11/2016 20:14

Were there any other quotes? I don't think I've ever seen a pub with only one quote on the rafters.

ShowMeTheElf · 19/11/2016 20:22

It's a famous/funny quote involving booze. It isn't necessarily modern, or current thinking, or deliberately offensive.
The original quote was 'I like my whisky old and my women young' by Erroll Flynn. Spelled correctly Wink.
..that said, I don't think Erroll Flynn's opinions on women are necessarily appropriate in any circles....

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/11/2016 20:24

Nope, not spelled correctly. Errol Flynn is the right spelling.

Jaimx86 · 19/11/2016 20:31

Kate, there was only one other quote about making gin and tonic if live gave you lemons. It was a pretty small pub tucked away on the Peak District.

Jaimx86 · 19/11/2016 20:32

Gasp0de, I completely agree with you. *Sexism and ageism don't amuse me.+

Great post Star. I find the slogan terribly sexist.

HateMrTumble · 19/11/2016 20:39

Wouldn't bother me whatsoever..

peachesandcreamdream · 19/11/2016 20:50

Does everything wind you up OP?

Perpetually offended brigade?

LifeLong13 · 19/11/2016 20:57

I like prosecco and my men older

Surely it's just stating what you like. You're reading way too much into this.

YoScienceBitch · 19/11/2016 21:08

i like prosecco and my men older

That's a good point! I only date older men. I don't see the problem.

limitedperiodonly · 19/11/2016 21:28

Famous people have said lots of things. Doesn't mean to say they're right.
