Just called in for a drink at a lively looking country pub, only to find the phrase 'I like my whiskey old and my women young' in large letters on the wall.

I understand that it's meant to be funny, but little digs at women and their appearance are apparent in too many places. I'm not outraged enough to 'complain', rather more disapointed that these views are so normalised. What do you think? Is it appropriate?

starchild great post, think I might copy and paste it next time someone tells me there's bigger things to worry about when I point out casual sexism!

Jaimx86 · 19/11/2016 22:08

Peaches, not wound up. Did I say I was? Just hoped that the general population was above making comments like that now.

Wonderful post, Starchild

Hmm'the perpetually offended brigade' is the motto of members of the perpetually dismissive brigade.

witsender · 19/11/2016 22:38

Even the "women are always right" poster is gross. It is hugely patronising, a man's 'patio' on the head' to the little woman who thinks she's in charge. While he's the one on the right side of the pay gap of course.

iminshock · 19/11/2016 23:05

The floor tiles one is the worst.
I've seen it said about women as well as men.

Horrible

Valentine2 · 19/11/2016 23:09

That's infuriatingly sexist. Twats

danadas · 19/11/2016 23:11

This sort of thing really doesn't arse me. I know it is supposed to but it just doesn't.

ShoesieQ · 20/11/2016 09:02

Iminshock I agree the tiles joke is vile,I only use it when some utter cock starts with the funnies along the lines of "What do you say to a woman with 2 black eyes?".And you just know if you call them up on it you'll be labelled a humourless old bitch.

Mind you,if you ever are called that you can always come back with the classic "What's the difference between a Bitch and a Ho? A Ho sleeps with anyone, a bitch sleeps with anyone but you". That one never fails to shut em up! Grin

If you dont like it dont use the place Great solution.

Using your argument, I wonder how many people would be offended if it said something like 'I like my chips to be chunky, and my woman to be skinny'?

I can understand, to some extent, if comments like the one on the pub wall don't bother people. What I can't understand is women (if you are, Fortnum?) critising people like me who would prefer not to see sexist comments anywhere in pubic/family places.

Im a man. A white heterosexual one - sorry did that trigger you ?

AChristmasCactus · 20/11/2016 13:51

Don't feed the MRA troll OP.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/11/2016 14:08

It's neither appropriate nor inappropriate. It's lazy, tired, hackneyed and unfunny.

A bit like this email Thomas Pink sent me (which the person in my house who might otherwise have got a Thomas Pink shirt also described as lazy etc)

As a middle aged female whisky drinker it just makes me think the owner is a prat and there are plenty of other places selling malt whisky.

starchild great post, think I might copy and paste it next time someone tells me there's bigger things to worry about when I point out casual sexism!

All of the examples on this thread are dire. It's not the casual sexism that bothers me- it's the casual lack of any original thought.

They are just versions of the " you don't have to be made to work here but it helps" poster.

Dull, trite, old hat.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2016 18:36

Lass - yes...and those that can't manage original thought could easily spend 5 minutes on the internet and find a quote which was less hackneyed and not sexist, ageist or anything-ist.

(Your NN has today given me a pleasant earworm, displacing hallelujah which had been stuck there for a bit too long. FlowersGrin)

peachesandcreamdream · 20/11/2016 19:29

If you're not wound up then why are you posting in AIBU about a quote in a pub?

I wouldn't say I'm dismissive - this just wouldn't even enter my consciousness as something to get my knickers in a twist about.

limitedperiodonly · 20/11/2016 19:40

Why shouldn't she post about a quote in a pub? It's a free country. If people admire the wit, they can go there.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/11/2016 19:47

Thank you Errol I've had a terrible earworm for the last 2 weeks - Hallelujah would be a blessing!

MrsHam13 · 20/11/2016 19:51

Doesn't bother me at all.

DavetheCat2001 · 20/11/2016 20:06

What is a MRA troll?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/11/2016 20:40

Men's Rights Activist, posting to annoy and goad.

LifeLong13 · 20/11/2016 21:06

OP it honestly wouldn't bother me if it said chips chunky and women skinny. It's a preference?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/11/2016 22:09

Yes , it's a preference, but why does it need to be said in the context of a pub or a restaurant? It's naff.

You order chips and a dram of whisky- you don't order up a skinny women.
