Just called in for a drink at a lively looking country pub, only to find the phrase 'I like my whiskey old and my women young' in large letters on the wall.

I understand that it's meant to be funny, but little digs at women and their appearance are apparent in too many places. I'm not outraged enough to 'complain', rather more disapointed that these views are so normalised. What do you think? Is it appropriate?

OP posts:
Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 19/11/2016 17:13

Slightly off the point but my favourite pub sign was from recently, just after the Trump election victory with so many unexpectedly voting for him, 'All Americans must be accompanied by an adult'

TheCompanyOfCats · 19/11/2016 17:14

That would piss me off. I see where you are coming from OP

Revenant · 19/11/2016 17:15

Or cross out the "wo"

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/11/2016 17:19

This one in the ladies loos of a pub I went to made me chuckle. I think a better place for the joke photo'd would have been in the loos as well.

Yes I thought it was a quote

Just wondering if those of you who find this acceptable would be ok if you went into a cafe and saw a sign saying "I like my coffee black and my women white" ?! Confused Cos for the life of I don't really see the difference.

So no, OP, I don't think you're being unreasonable.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/11/2016 17:23

I don't like it. It's toilet humour. Just to be clear. It's the same level as my post. And no, that would be an awful thing to say Shoesie.

limitedperiodonly · 19/11/2016 17:25

It's shit OP

In 1989, when I was nubile, my future husband took me to a South African deli in SW London one Sunday morning to buy biltong. Don't ask me why I went. I was in love, so willing to get up early to buy shoe leather masquerading as food after a shag.

The shop was running a competition where you could flash your tits for a Polaroid (remember them) and be put on the wall to be judged by the customers. The winner got some biltong. It wasn't even your body weight in dessicated meat of dubious species.

After declining this tempting offer, I went to my car, and told my husband-to-be to never take me back to this knuckle-draggers' emporium again.

We didn't go. I wonder if it's still there or if they owners have developed kuru or some other bush meat-related neuro degenerative disorder. Not that they weren't on their way.

gillybeanz · 19/11/2016 17:26

It wouldn't bother me. So some men prefer younger women, I'm sure my young men dc do. I somehow couldn't imagine them being with a 50 odd year old woman at 25.
have you newt better to complain about.

WeAreUglyButWeHaveTheMusic · 19/11/2016 17:27

You're right, OP. It just perpetuates a lazy prejudice.

The very fact that so many women on here don't see what the problem is shows that a lot of people don't really understand the wider implications of this sort of message. However subtle.

ShoesieQ · 19/11/2016 17:31

Mummy - I agree that if something like that should be anywhere it should be in the loo. And bearing in mind most sexist jokes seem to be against women, it's useful to have a few up your sleeve!

On which note the one I find shuts up the misogynists the best is "How many men does it take to tile a bathroom? Two, if you slice them thinly enough"! Grin

When delivered with my very best, sweetest smile that usually works a treat.

BeingATinselTwatItsABingThing · 19/11/2016 17:32

I do understand why it is offensive but I can't let myself get worked up about it.

I used to be bothered by everything but my mum taught me to pick my battles. It's a lesson I take very seriously and now I preserve my energy for bigger things.

Kitsa · 19/11/2016 17:37

Shame you gave up giving a fuck.
It's a small thing that ties into and perpetuates bigger things. We should care.

YANBU OP.

witsender · 19/11/2016 17:38

Yanbu, it's crap.

BeingATinselTwatItsABingThing · 19/11/2016 17:46

Giving a fuck about a stupid wall sign in a pub? Yeah, I did. It still bothers me because it's ridiculous and sexist but I wouldn't get annoyed to the point of starting a thread or complaining to anyone.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2016 17:52

The OP clearly did 'pick her battles' (she didnt make a fuss about it) and doesn't appear to me to be 'worked up' or 'wound up'. She is calmly expressing her disappointment at this sort of sexist/ageist 'joke'. Which seems perfectly reasonable. Such mild complaints about this sort of thing always do get magnified by a few of the 'yabus' - precisely to make them appear unreasonable I suppose.Hmm

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/11/2016 17:52

Shoesie. Hadn't heard that one Grin

WLF46 · 19/11/2016 17:55

I think it's meant as a joke, that whisk(e)y improves with age and people tend not to? In a pub it is hardly inappropriate, you will always hear or see things in a pub that are offensive to somebody. If you are really that upset just take your custom elsewhere!

Some people try to be offended at the slightest thing. We should accept that people sometimes have a different sense of humour to ourselves. Not everyone is the same.

limitedperiodonly · 19/11/2016 17:56

I wouldn't get annoyed to the point of starting a thread or complaining to anyone.

Yet you replied to this thread

YvaineStormhold · 19/11/2016 17:56

I don't like it.

Skittlesss · 19/11/2016 17:59

It's a quote from Errol Flynn. I don't think it's intended to cause offence.

YvaineStormhold · 19/11/2016 18:00

Also, if it is attributed to Errol Flynn, that's even worse given his predeliction for underage girls Hmm

lljkk · 19/11/2016 18:01

It's crass.

I wouldn't start a thread about it... but I might take my custom somewhere else next time.

Memoires · 19/11/2016 18:31

It's this sort of thing which perpetuates the idea that women are disposable. I'm sad that after 40+ years of fighting this sort of prejudice there are so many women who are so used to it they don't care, even when it's pointed out to them.
