AIBU to show a 12 cert film at a birthday party? And which one!

My dd turns 12 soon and wants to a movie party.

I cannot find a suitable film that is a PG so I am now looking at 12 cert ones.

Of course dd will be 12 but most of the guests will not be 12 yet (They are all 11).I thought if I told the kids (and parents) what movie will be shown on the invite, it would be fine.

I generally like the PG ones but I hope parents won't mind a 12 cert.

Plus any ideas what I can show?

I've just got 'Pixels' but it has been panned by critics! Did anyone's kids enjoy it.

Several of them have seen Goosebumps, which would have been a good choice. My dd ad loads of kids love Lego movie - but it is old now!

It's the first time dd has invited boys as well as girls and she will have food and fun and end with a movie.

But which one!

My 10 year old loved Goosebumps. It's a 10 certificate where we live (not UK) and I took DD (10) and her friend (11) to see it at the cinema. They both had a couple of Big Shock jump-out-of-their-seats moments but thoroughly enjoyed it! I think it'd be great for the 11-12 age group.
DD also enjoyed Miss Peregrine... recently but I'd be wary of allowing other people's children to watch as I think some 11-12 year olds might be terrified!
Other firm favourites and safer options that DD watched at her birthday sleepover are Home and Into the Woods!

Ds loved pixels.

He went to an 11th birthday cinema party & the parent chose a 12 certificate film which surprised Me a little.
By year 7 the kids were all going to the cinema themselves after school. A 12 cert wouldn't bother me then.

How about an older movie they might not have seen- I'm thinking airplane but that's probably unsuitable! But maybe the simpsons movie, gremlins?

Monster House is a PG & pretty good fun.

Bill by the Horrible Histories crew is funny. Plus there's the added bonus of Ben Willbond playing a very sexy King Philip II of Spain

Check with the parents. The tedious, constant sexual innuendo in Pixels pissed me off tbh so I'd vote Goosebumps on that basis alone.

Pixels is brilliant! I loved it and so did my son. And we saw it at the cinema when he was 10 so I'm wondering if it was a PG then because I wouldn't have taken him under age. Honestly I don't think there's anything in Pixels inappropriate for an 11 year old.

DD8 loves Pixels (as do we!) Also as PP said Goosebumps is a fave with DD11

We love Pixels in this house. It's quite smutty, but in a very school playground way. It's really funny and all three of mine love it.

But do check with the parents first.

How smutty is pixels?

There's a running gag about a threesome with Serena Williams and Martha Stewart, and lots of teenagery perving over Lady Lisa.

It's all very mild though, nothing overt.

My kids aged 12 11 and 5 all loved pixels

Another vote for Pixels. Very funny with enough adult humour to give the kids a laugh!

Honestly, I would check with the parents. I think it is ridiculous that you should have to, but the reality is some parents are over-protective and will not appreciate you showing a 12 when their child is 11.

I have a similar situation. My son is 10 and I was thinking of taking them to see Fantastic Beasts, but it's a 12A. I think I will look for some reviews once it has released and sound out the other parents first. Wasn't too concerned, but I just saw "Jason Bourne" which has really violent and also a 12A (wtf?)

I now think I'm a terrible parent. Ds (10) has watched loads of 12s and some 15s. I make a judgement on whether I think they are suitable. We watched jaws the other week and wasn't scared at all. In fact laughed because the shark is so unrealistic. Kids these days are so used to cgi

We did 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' for ds1's 10th. It was very popular (well the fighting and the creepy crawlies were, the kissing not so much) and only one had seen it before.

I would expect you to check with the parents before showing a film with a rating above the age of all the children.

It's fine to use your judgement with your own kids, Choude. I will be surprised if my 11 year old hasn't watched films with 12 certs when the time comes.
