To never wash again

Am I being unreasonable to never wash my hair again. Does anyone else not wash their hair?

OP posts:

My cats smell of biscuits Grin -completely misses point of thread-

Whycantibetangy · 09/11/2016 18:45

fails strikethough

youarenotkiddingme · 09/11/2016 18:46

I learnt the other day you can use talcum powder as deodorant.

Wonder if you can apply the same to the hair? Must be a bit like dry shampoo Grin

iloveeverykindofcat · 09/11/2016 18:54

[Has only read first page] My cats smell beautiful. Like fresh laundry and flowers Angry

JenLindleyShitMom · 09/11/2016 18:55

I used talc for years as a dry shampoo. It works.

Her scalp and condition of her hair are great - she doesn't smell - and no chemicals or plastic used.

Water is a chemical. I assume she uses water?

BusPuppy · 09/11/2016 19:09

I don't wash my hair with commercial shampoo, haven't done for years. It's fine, better than it has ever been in fact, silky, shiny, intensely dark and no more frizz.

I make my own shampoo with things like herbs, clay, soapnuts, apple cider vinegar, aloe vera, and add a few essential oils or hydrosols for scent - smells divine someone recently said. There's various methods for going no-poo, it's worth the effort of finding the right one for your hair.

My hair has balanced now and is happy to go indefinitely just getting washed with water and brushed without getting greasy or manky - but I like it to smell of something lovely sometimes. It needs to be well brushed with a boar-bristle brush and I use a wooden wide tooth comb to pull the tangles out.

There is an adjustment period which can last weeks - months, but using alternative hair-cleaning methods can really ease the pain of the changeover. And it is so worth it in the end.

Footle · 09/11/2016 19:23

Talc is not innocuous.

unlucky83 · 09/11/2016 19:25

Talcum powder used to used as a dry shampoo!!! If you didn't have time to wash it sprinkle some on and brush it out...my DM told me that one and she grew up in a house that didn't have a bathroom until she was a teen...
I tried the no shampoo thing - just rinse in water and it was vile at first - truly rank for a couple of months then it did get better and it was fine - and looked really healthy and apparently didn't smell (and I got my DP and sister to smell it.) I lasted just over a year then got carried away in my after giving birth shower and used the shampoo that had been loitering in my wash bag. I've never managed to face going through the vile stage again.

I'm sensitive to MIT which is in lots of shampoos and conditioner - I was using Johnson's baby shampoo (no conditioner) but that gave me a greasy scalp so in desperation I used ecover washing up liquid. After a week or so that left it a bit dry - so I bought a shampoo bar from funky soap- which is good but tends to build up in your hair (it says it take a while to get used to it and to rinse really well -and also recommended a vinegar rinse every so often - I did the good rinse but the vinegar is too much faff ).
Now I wash it three times a week and use ecover washing up liquid twice and shampoo bar once and it is in fantastic condition. Never use conditioner/other products.
For the OP I would ditch the 2 in 1 or use conditioner as well if your hair is really dry. Or look at alternatives...

I do now believe that shampoo is made to strip the oils out of your hair -so you need to buy conditioner to replace them which will make it more greasy so you need to wash it more often ...so they can sell you more stuff...

Horsepower9 · 09/11/2016 19:29

My Dh only uses conditioner, no shampoo and he has way nicer hair than me😞

ThinkOfTheMice · 09/11/2016 19:33

Christ don't use talc! Long term iseage is implicated in increased risk of ovarian cancer. As a pp says it's not innocuous stuff.

Everything is chemicals. Can we just knock the idea that natural = good on the head? Ebola, cancer, arsenic, asbestos and botulinum toxin are all natural.

ObsidianWinter · 09/11/2016 19:35

Never take anything in The Sun at face value. And hair doesn't self-clean. You could reduce the number of washes without doing much harm, but please don't be one of those people who has nasty, smelly, greasy hair but thinks it's fine because "it's natural oils".

Tapandgo · 09/11/2016 19:36

Stop reading The Sun - first improvement

Maireadplastic · 09/11/2016 19:45

Just started using only conditioner and rinsing well with water. My hair looks fabulous-- gorgeous textured waves like it's been tonged.

perditalost · 09/11/2016 19:48

Cats bottoms smell.

Unwashed hair smells like cats bottoms.

ZebraOwl · 09/11/2016 19:50

My cats smell of biscuits too Grin they also like eating them if they get any chance to snaffle some...

WritingHome · 09/11/2016 19:59

unfortunately I work with someone who does not wash often enough and there are days when she absolutely reeks - of BO and unwashed body / hair smell. Her clothes don't smell fresh either and you can often smell cooking smells from them.

Her hair reeks - oily, greasy and unclean smelling and it is often visually dirty too, with visible dandruff.

She is not depressed or in ill health. Just doesn't believe in washing too often or 'using chemicals'

She also seems to favour nylon / polyester type martial blouses / jackets which really does not help.

She doesn't smell so bad everyday but frequently enough.
I travelled with her for work and as we only had hand luggage I saw that she had NO products apart from makeup in her luggage (clear plastic bags for customs). No deodorant / shampoo / shower gel etc

I find it shocking, she is married and has a child. I often wonder if the husband / child smell bad too. I have never met them so can't say. But it makes me feel sad for the child.

I shower every day and wash my hair about 5 times a week but more often than not, every day as I hate the feel of it if I don't

Sundance01 · 09/11/2016 20:28

I did not wash my hair for 8 years and it was fine - I showered daily and just let the hot water run through it. It definately did not smell.

I only started washing my hair when I started swimming regularly and I do find I need the shampoo to get the chlorine out

Other wise I still would not wash it.

covgal1983 · 09/11/2016 20:31

BF's 5 yo has never had his hair washed - smells lovely; neighbour with weave doesn't wash her'a - completely clean; my uni BF didn't - again fine. But personally I couldn't do it. And am quite surprised how much experience I have of this phenomenon.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 09/11/2016 21:22

My 4yo do doesn't have shampoo on his hair ever. We co-wash as he is very much a curly boy, it's great and he smells like coconuts ❤️

stuckinthemiddlewithpooh · 09/11/2016 22:54

I've tried the no poo method, egg, vinegar, the herbal baths and bicarb. My hair was like a Chinese takeaway menu. It had everything on it...... I'm allergic to all shampoos expect the cheap ones which have less harmful chemicals in. Alberto Balsam is good but the own supermarket sensitive brands are great. The more expensive the product, the more perfume and irritants that are present. However, this time of year I get psoriasis on my scalp from the cold weather. I have to get coal tar from my doctor. T gel is the closest you can buy without prescription. After 4 separate washes and one wash every few weeks my scalp and hair are lovely again. For some people, like if you get chapped lips, it could be the scalp reacting to the cold weather. A hat outdoors also helps prevent it somewhat. Old cats begin to honk as their spit dries up and they can't clean as easily. Their name changes at that point from mrs fluffy to mrs stink face. This is to let you know that they will be gone soon, but their funk will stench up the place for months after they've gone. We remember smells for longer too. Cats know this. It's feline affection. As a cat owner I know my house stinks, I've drowned it in so many scented products......... and nothing gets out unneutered cat piss. Bloody strays! However if you don't like the smell..... Please don't let the door hit you on the way out! I love my cats, stinky or not. They are much nicer than some people. I started washing my hair again when fluffy took it upon herself to clean my hair at any opportunity. I took the hint. I found the cat spit somewhat offensive. She could have hissed like usual 😉

Woody67 · 09/11/2016 23:21

But how would you style it if you don't get it wet?

LifeLong13 · 09/11/2016 23:24

I have long curly hair & only wash it once a week. It doesn't smell etc. As it's super dry it doesn't need washing often. Using a 2 in 1 isn't going to help.

Onsera3 · 10/11/2016 10:08

I don't shampoo- haven't done for 2.5 years. My hair smells fine and looks great. I always got compliments on my hair before but now it has even more body and bounce.

I wash it with hot water every 2-3 days to clean it and help redistribute the oils. Btw I massage the ends into the roots which works better than dry shampoo I find- takes oil from roots and puts on tips. I also use a natural bristle brush to help move oil from roots to tip.

Apparently sleeping in silk turban also does wonders. There is a Silke brand one but it's exp and you can't wash it so I'm hesitating.

I'm very into personally grooming and wear a full face of makeup everyday. I'm not your stereotypical unwashed hippy.

My hair is so much easier to manage and the body and wave is better. I don't need conditioner now as the shampoo isn't stripping my hair. My hair is thick wavy and bra length.

I do use cider vinegar sometimes. I also use hair colour.

GhettoFabulous · 10/11/2016 10:57

I'm having a flashback to my mum being on six months bed rest and leaving a head shaped grease mark on the wall from where she sat up.

MrsSpa · 11/11/2016 10:04

DD (5) has her hair washed approx twice a year, after a beach holiday or similar. Looks lovely, not greasy or dry, no smell. DS (3) I'm fairly sure I've never washed his hair! Same for him. My Sil and Mil only wash their hair every three weeks
