To never wash again

Am I being unreasonable to never wash my hair again. Does anyone else not wash their hair?

OP posts:
BratFarrarsPony · 07/11/2016 22:03

but you do wash with water right Squinkies?

JenLindleyShitMom · 07/11/2016 22:03

My hair was in the best condition of its life the year I was washing it with apple cider vinegar and bicarb. I got so many compliments on the condition and the shine of it was lovely. I have long thick hair and I was dubious at first but it was really lovely. I can't remember why I stopped doing it, it was a bit of a faff but I think i might start doing it again.

Sara107 · 07/11/2016 22:03

Cats don't smell particularly strongly (if the house smells of cat it's pee not fur). But when wet their fur does have a distinct wet cat smell. I think k the people who don't wash their hair and say it doesn't smell are all washing it but just not with shampoo. If you stop with the shampoo I'm guessing you get to the stage where the oils all reach their natural balance, but the water washing stops it getting smelly. I think if you just do nothing with your hair you will pong. I've given up on conditioner without noticing any difference but not sure I could make the leap to skipping the shampoo as well!

JenLindleyShitMom · 07/11/2016 22:05

Btw it clearly doing something wrong with my cat. She fucking hums! Hmm Grin

Smidge001 · 07/11/2016 22:11

steff13 it's definitely a thing. If you don't have a shower and you can't be bothered filling up a jug to chuck over your head. Or because your taps take a rare meeting of the moon in Venus to make a nice temperature come out rather than scalding hot or freezing cold.

It's definitely a thing. I can't do it more than once in a row though or my head starts to itch as it's clearly not been rinsed properly.

Smidge001 · 07/11/2016 22:13

I'm not a cat owner but I don't think cats fur smells nasty at all. Cat food, cat pee and cat breath might well be gross (and make a cat owners house smell) but I've never stuck my face in the fur of a cat and thought it smelled anything other than warm fluffy loveliness.

Crazeecurlee · 07/11/2016 22:15

I don't wash my hair with shampoo. I use a sulfate free co-wash conditioner from Palmer on Amazon, anywhere between twice a week and once a fortnight. I wet and condition my hair and massage my scalp everyday with something more nourishing (tresemme botanique). Google the curly girl method OP. It's not just for curly hair, and has helped me and others immensely with dandruff, dryness and breakage. My hair is in fabulous condition, is super long, definitely doesn't smell (my mum would 100% tell me if it did, and has done on occasion when I haven't used the co-wash conditioner) and I always get compliments on my hair. It does go through a week or so of being really really greasy when you start, however it goes pretty quickly.

SquinkiesRule · 07/11/2016 22:25

Yes I wash with water in the shower so it is well rinsed.
I tried the Apple cider vinegar and bicarb a few years back, it was a faff so I quit I didn't see any difference, only a mild smell of vinegar for me. I preferred the smell of my conditioner.
I made my own hair mask conditioner that I used weekly I ran out a while back. it was made of Olive oil, Coconut oil and raw Shea butter, with a hand blender, and kept in the shower in a plastic jar. That always made my hair feel nice and soft. I need to order more Shea butter.

TaraCarter · 07/11/2016 22:29

Cats do smell. It's a really nice smell, in my opinion, but they do smell.

loveyogalovelife · 07/11/2016 22:29

A friend went to hairdressing college and told me in tests that Timotei was the harshest shampoo they had found. Admittedly it was a good few years ago...

I only use gentle chemical-free products as I'm not convinced all the stuff in high street beauty and cleaning products is really safe or good for your skin/scalp/hair. It's too harsh and some of the chemicals are questionable when you look into them.

I've even started using natural henna/indigo on my hair for the last year and people have been commenting on how healthy and shiny it looked. I preferred it untouched but had been going to a very good west London hairdresser for colour / t-section to blend in the few white hairs, and the condition was going my downhill dramatically, even with Moroccan oil treatments etc. Now I use natural henna/indigo blend for colour and coconut oil to deep condition and it's amazing!

Marcipex · 07/11/2016 22:34

Maybe on some people it does sort itself eventually...
I had a colleague who never washed her hair and it was solid. It stank. I can say with certainty that hers did not sort itself in six years.

Excited101 · 07/11/2016 22:37

I know a family where the 5 year old girl only gets her hair rinsed as it'll 'self cleanse' as far as I know it's been this way for years now and it's hideous. The hair itself looks ok but the scalp looks like she's got the most awful case of cradle cap.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 07/11/2016 23:13

I think the key is finding the right products for your hair and scalp type. It might take a little while but will make a massive difference.

2in1 probably isn't very good for hair as dry as yours. I'd also recommend getting a nourishing hair mask and regularly using a hair oil when it's damp before drying. If you can avoid roughing it up too much when towel drying and avoid heated tools even better.

aintnothinbutagstring · 07/11/2016 23:39

I think this would work on curly/afro hair. My dd had fine curly hair and I use shampoo infrequently, just co-wash mainly. But my hair is poker straight, fine, it goes lank and greasy real quick, even if I use minimal shampoo just on the roots. I really don't think I could get away with never washing it.

Candlelight123 · 07/11/2016 23:53

I nearly heaved in the cinema queuing, guy in front had hair thick with dandruff and grease. It stank, made sure I sat away from him.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 08/11/2016 00:01

Oh God, this brings back so many horrible memories of my Dad. He spent about 2 years not washing his hair, spouting on about self cleaning- it STANK, to the point I could be in a small space with him, especially his car. He made me feel so so sick I avoided seeing him as much as possible, it honestly reeked and DD1 was a toddler at the time, and loved to touch hair .....

Thankfully my mum also couldn't stand it anymore and he started washing it again, but the smell never left his car from the headrest, utterly disgusting.

SparkyBlue · 09/11/2016 12:09

DD almost 4 absolutely dreads washing her hair so she wets it but no shampoo. Actually it probably hasn't been washed in shampoo for about three months as it was just too much of a battle. It's glossy and bouncy and everyone admires it and no more dry scalp. However she has beautiful thick hair so I don't know how it would look if she inherited my awful hair Smile

maddiemookins16mum · 09/11/2016 12:35

I've just had a sniff of Fluffballmookins, she smells of malted milk biscuits around her furry neck and her paws smell of sour cream and chive pringles.
She did smell of wet cat earler, very wet cat.

DudeWheresMyVulva · 09/11/2016 12:36

There is a woman at church who has very long hair in a plait and she claims to never wash it because of the self cleaning thing. She often invites people to do the sniff test. No-one takes her up on it - probably because no-one has to - she can be smelt quite well enough from one end of the church to another. Most people grimace a bit but no-one has had the nerve to tell her she is delusional.

SemiNormal · 09/11/2016 12:36

A while back I didn't wash my hair for around 9 or 10 days. The result was my head itched like my hair was full of lice, it was fucking horrible and not something I'd ever wish to repeat! Not only that but what about the dead skin from the scalp? does that not just stick in the greasiness and look totally minging?

YouHadMeAtCake · 09/11/2016 12:40

I love washing my hair and I love the feel of it when it's freshy washed and dried naturally. You would stink and are BVU to think you could get away with it.

JellyBelli · 09/11/2016 12:44

People have different skin and hair types. I couldnt stop washing my hair, it gets very greasy and its a myth that it would suddenly stop. Shampoo doesnt cause your skin to produce more or less sebum.
All you can do is try it and see if it suits you.

BumbleNova · 09/11/2016 12:50

even the thought makes me retch. vomtastic. you will stink.

have you tried another shampoo? I love Aesop's calming shampoo, its natural ingredients and leaves my hair soft. it smells of mint and eucaliptus. I agree with others, 2-1 is the worst thing for your hair. get yourself some proper products instead of giving it up. the self washing thing is total rubbish.

Footle · 09/11/2016 12:51

My son did this, or rather didn't do it, for some months , as a not very stable teenager. It was bloody awful. He also didn't wear his glasses as he thought his myopia would improve miraculously. That didn't work either. He is now an older, wiser, better-smelling person who doesn't say hello to lampposts in the street.
