To never wash again

Am I being unreasonable to never wash my hair again. Does anyone else not wash their hair?

ThinkOfTheMice · 07/11/2016 20:53

Oh lord. This again.

I've known several people over the last fifteen years or so who tell me they only rinse with water. Or that hair is self cleaning. They all insist it doesn't smell. Insistent about the not smelling.
Every single one of them smelled. From that mildly unpleasant cat smell to full on 'arctic expedition not washed for a month' smell. No one told them, because the British would rather eat molten rock than offend.
Some people are less able to smell it I think (the human sense of smell is very variable) but yes, if you don't wash it, it smells.

It isn't self cleaning. Total myth.

pklme · 07/11/2016 20:53

It's about stretching the gap between washes. I was quite poorly for a while and scraped my hair back and didn't wash it. I was at home in bed, so it didn't matter. I used a boar bristle brush, which smoothes the oil from the root to the tip, and cleans the scalp. I scrubbed it with water occasionally. Then I did an egg wash and it was back to squeaky clean again.

Don't just dive in without advice, or you will end up lank and smelly!

itsbetterthanabox · 07/11/2016 20:55

Some people use baking soda and vinegar.
Oh and cats all smell. You've gone nose blind. Everyone with cats has a stinky house. They are just used to it.

ChicRock · 07/11/2016 20:56

I love how people who've tried it insist their hair really doesn't/didn't smell.

It does, you just got used to the pong and everyone around you is too damn polite to tell you that you stink.

Horridhenryrules · 07/11/2016 20:57

Reindeerlily My hair feels brittle and dull looking I have dandruff and my head feels dry. The man from Blur looking at his hair it looked so silky and full bodied.

Horridhenryrules · 07/11/2016 20:58

How do you do an egg wash?

OP posts:
Bertucci · 07/11/2016 21:00

To be fair - whatsit from Blur looks like he smells, generally. And all that cheese! Can't be good.

Smartleatherbag · 07/11/2016 21:00

I'm relieved more people are posting about how this is total and utter bollocks. Things do not self clean, except for those expensive ovens. Friends lie about the stench because they are kind. Houses are with cats, or any pets, do smell.
Wash your flipping hair, op. Maybe do the co wash thing or whatever, but hair needs cleaned

Smartleatherbag · 07/11/2016 21:01

Ugh, Alex James looks really greasy.

MuseumOfCurry · 07/11/2016 21:01

May I ask, what's your normal hair regime?

I have double-processed, long hair and I have it blown dry professionally 2x weekly. I sleep with strengthening treatment the night before I wash, and use a deep Kerastase conditioner after washing and still I can only get away twice weekly washing.

It is deeply unpleasant the 3rd day, but hey-ho.

Happyhippy45 · 07/11/2016 21:05

A friend did this years ago. Her hair looked fabulous and didn't smell. She said it took about 6 weeks for it to settle.
I tried but gave up after about a week.

pklme · 07/11/2016 21:07

If I knew how to PM you, OP, I would.

Everyone else- you cannot see or smell me. I assure you my DM is in no way 'kind'- in fact she seeks out opportunities to criticise. My hair gets complimented by friends and strangers.

People do this if they react to commercial products (they can be pretty harsh) or for Eco reasons. My skin has never been better.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, people didn't need to buy several bottles of synthetic crap every month just to keep their hair clean.

JuanPotatoTwo · 07/11/2016 21:08

Horrid have you tried using shampoos and conditioners without silicone?

Papergirl1968 · 07/11/2016 21:09

My cat doesn't smell, thank you very much. He is cleaner than most humans.

Smartleatherbag · 07/11/2016 21:12

pklm, people stank a few generations ago.

QueenOfTheNaps · 07/11/2016 21:13

My dog smells of wotsits.

In other news, I think those who say they don't wash their hair still rinse it with water no?
I just can't imagine it not smelling though.

Ice3 · 07/11/2016 21:14

I tried washing my hair with egg as a teenager, I think it was in a magazine. I wasn't very clever and washed it out with hot water. Not the best idea I ever had.

Horsegirl1 · 07/11/2016 21:14

I'm all for no poo. I know many with gorgeous glossy locks that are no poo

Oops, I didn't do it twice Blush

Cherrysoup · 07/11/2016 21:15

Mine is corkscrew curls, haven't used shampoo in months. Every morning, it's rinsed/soaked in the shower, then has conditioner slapped on, combed through and left to air dry. Doesn't smell, looks amazing.

MissBeehiving · 07/11/2016 21:15

I don't wash my cats and they smell like lovely fluffy things of gorgeousness. I do wash my dogs because they whiff a bit. I wash my hair be cause if I didn't then I would smell like the dogs. HTH

Bluntness100 · 07/11/2016 21:16

Not washing it isn't the answer. And you can't look at a pic of some bloke and think uour hair will look like that any more than you can buy a dress modelled by a super model and look like her.

What are you doing with uour hair? Are you conditioning it? Deep conditions? Taking supplements? Do you use products? Which ones?

The answer is surely to work out how to resolve the issue with conditioners etc, understand if there is an underlying health issue, not look at articles in the sun and decide if you stop washing it uou will look like some pop star...

Seriously.

loveyogalovelife · 07/11/2016 21:18

I hardly dare admit it but my gorgeous hippy husband used to have a thick mane of long-ish curly dark brown/black hair and he never really washed it...he did rinse it in water though. And it did indeed self-clean. So it looked thick, healthy, shiny and luscious. I would put my foot down every so often (1-3 months :-o) and insist it had a proper shampoo and condition, particularly during hot summer days or if for some reason it had got dusty in some way.

At this point I'd like to reassure you all that he is a very clean person in every other way (body, soul and home). In fact he does most of the housework as I have a big job... He definitely challenged my assumptions as his hair didn't smell or appear dirty.

But I must say, I'm glad it's shorter now and is washed once a week these days...

NightNightBadger19962 · 07/11/2016 21:19

Mine just looks too lank if I wash it just with water. I tried a few alternatives, but found baking soda makes it too dry. My hair looks amazing with coconut oil but gets a bit greasy looking underneath and I have to wash my hairbrush all the time. I have now compromised and switched to a silicone free shampoo and conditioner (some cheapo ones and some fancy ones from Waitrose) but use them sparingly and less frequently, After quite a while, I think my hair is less frizzy at the roots. Excessive products make you smell worse in between using them though! Less is more (Imho).
