"Hacked off"

"Tear him a new one"

I've never heard one person in real life use either of those and to be honest, I'm glad! They're the ugliest phrases ever!

Tear him a new one is particularly disgusting.

AIBU to ask you to share yours? Either things you don't hear in real life or things you hate but only encounter here?

Veggie it makes you angry, no?

frikadela01 · 06/11/2016 16:44

Was coming to say unmumsnetty hug but bloodymaria beat me to it.

I see them thrown around so often that I can only come to the conclusion that actually most people like hugs.

derxa · 06/11/2016 16:46

A bit depressed that people think "patriarchy" is a niche, mumsnet, in-word of the same ilk as "head tilt" and "sanpro".

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/11/2016 17:48

I know patriarchy is a word used in debating gender politics but I never see the level of navel gazing feminist analysis in RL

I don't like that thing of thread titles starting with So and bot ending with anything.

So, I took DS to school...
So, today I was in Sainsburys...

S/he is a narc.

I hear that and always think it sounds like a crime drama. You know, like an undercover narc. Never heard anyone use that in real life or met anyone I've thought it of.

DanicaJones · 06/11/2016 18:16

Feeling stabby

NuggetofPurestGreen · 06/11/2016 18:17

Edmund it means the same as man up doesn't it? Grow up/toughen up/cop on etc.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 06/11/2016 18:21

I don't go round talking about 'the patriarchy' all day or anything but if I was discussing feminism/politics etc. I would use it. Don't see why that's odd. Fair enough if you don't talk about that stuff I guess.

EdmundCleverClogs · 06/11/2016 18:24

NuggetofPurestGreen, but 'man up' is a terrible phrase. It suggests that because of your gender, you shouldn't show emotion or weakness. It caused a lot of issues for men to be told to 'man up'. Changing it to 'woman up' isn't 'empowering', it's just putting the same ridiculous stipulations on women instead of men. It's not progressive to take a 'male phrase' and make it feminine.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/11/2016 18:24

Most people live in an echo chamber.

I discuss books, art, politics but feminism isn't something that comes up

MetallicBeige · 06/11/2016 18:32

WhoKnows Yes!

See also 'well''.

"Well, I was talking to my sister, and well, she only told me she's having her 15th child. Well, I was not happy". Etc etc.

MetallicBeige · 06/11/2016 18:33

The 'word' Sanpro is a disgrace, and should be scoured from existence. Grin

NuggetofPurestGreen · 06/11/2016 18:34

Ah see that's hasn't been my interpretation of 'man up' Edmund although agree that it can be seen that way. I also say 'person up' sometimes - I think if it more as 'grow up'. But point taken. TBH I usually only say it if someone else says 'man up' like Loretta in Life of Brian.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 06/11/2016 18:41

I think 'person up' sounds worse than 'woman up'

paxillin · 06/11/2016 18:44

I think sanpro is a very sensible word. Tampons, pads, towels, panty liners, mooncups and assorted washables... or sanpro. DS saves 1 letter, sanpro saves about 40.

MissDuke · 06/11/2016 18:47

I was going to say san pro! I quite like it but only ever see it here. Also Mimsy, a new one yesterday Grin

NuggetofPurestGreen · 06/11/2016 18:49

Yes Livia as I said I just do it in response to someone saying 'man up' - same as when someone says chairman I say chairperson. It's supposed to be a slight joke that's all. Like Loretta in Life of Brian who keeps saying 'or woman' whenever anyone says man.

thescarftwins · 06/11/2016 18:59

Boak!

derxa · 06/11/2016 19:07

Vulva

Never heard anyone ouside a biology lesson use the word in the wild.

Lucyccfc · 06/11/2016 19:10

'Bad form'. The only other place I have heard that expression is in the film Peter Pan.

No one would seriously use that expression in real life? To be fair, I really want to poke anyone in the eye who uses it on here too. Really, what kind of knob says this?
