To be hacked off that I have been judged for shopping in m&s?

After finishing a night shift this morning popped into M&S for some shopping for me and DP...parking was near, I couldn't be arsed to fight my way around Asda, Sainsbury's etc... I came out with about 4 bags and quite a few of their 3 for £10 offers on food and 3 for £7 along with some fruit etc.. for my packed lunches. I work hard for my money and am not afraid to grab a bargain in other supermarkets it was just that I wanted the quickness of this store and fancied treating myself too. I came out with my shopping and bumped into friends daughter ..she looks at my shopping bags and has a sarcastic grin on her face saying 'oh marks' I say yes I couldn't be arsed to go to Asdas etc just finished work wanna get home...well she said if that was me I'd walk to Asda's to save myself ALL that money hitching judge pants to under chin AIBU to think that a friends DD (aged 30) who will only wear Dune shoes and who's DH and her both have good jobs should not piss me off big time have to judge where I chose to shop?? Angry

Same here usual.

Horsepower9 · 06/11/2016 22:44

Did she buy her judge pants at mark's?? There elastic in knickers lasts forever!! Grin

Briarthorn · 06/11/2016 22:50

It happened to me, popped into M&S for two or three things I couldn't get in the Tesco next door and was seen by a wealthy relative who hasn't stopped sniping about it! We were talking about driving into Wales to go to a specific attraction and they suggested that we should charter a private jet / helicopter, what with all our riches Hmm Grin People can be extremely strange. I can only imagine they equated shopping at M&S with a lottery win given that we're peasants who live in social housing.

MetallicBeige · 06/11/2016 23:22

Mine too usual

The way people talk on here you'd think it was all Dairylea Dunkers, Babybels and Laughing Cow triangles.

I must admit paying 20p more for my Heinz beans from Sainsbury's means they lose the taste of poor that the asda Heinz beans have, I think the asda ones are obviously seconds.

Oh all right, I was in M&S for the Prosecco crisps with the little gold star sequins in them Blush

MrsKoala · 06/11/2016 23:51

All other ones i have been in do too. I used to live near the one in Mudchute and it had loads of stuff. But the one in Croydon was utter cack. As i said tho, it was about 15 years ago so i assume/hope it has upped it's game a bit since.

Because i only learned to drive recently i always go to the nearest supermarket to where i live. So over the years they have been (in order) Somerfield, Waitrose, Tesco, Somerfield, Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Tesco, Lidl, Lidl, Sainsbury. Soon there is an M&S food AND an Aldi opening near as well.

Out of all Aldi was my favourite.

Ohyesiam · 06/11/2016 23:53

Wtf are Percy pigs?

Topseyt · 07/11/2016 00:04

Ohyes, they are pink sweets in the shape of pigs.

My DDs love them because you can also get them in a form suitable for vegetarians (without gelatin). They also like Colin the Caterpillar, as do I. My DDs are 21, 18 (almost) and 14. I am 50.Grin

Briarthorn · 07/11/2016 00:08

And they did fizzy cola bottles but not just cola bottles, no, CHERRY cola and ginger beer ones and lemonade and pink lemonade ones.

I've lost all credibility now haven't I? Should've said they had a superior type of kale or summat.

Glastokitty · 07/11/2016 00:11

I bloody miss M &S. And Waitrose. The supermarkets in Australia are shit, honestly they are like Asda from the 80s. We just got Aldi here in WA, people actually queued to get in the first week! Not so stealth brag here, I got to open one, cutting the ribbon and everything! queenly wave.

salsmum · 07/11/2016 01:21

Thank you for all these posts..some have given me a chuckle on my night shift. BrewGrin although she mentioned M&S with a grin it was said 2 or 3 times with a HmmHmmlook too. The reason why I mentioned that her and her Dh have good jobs was in case anyone said ...they might shop in Asdas because they can't afford M&s and the Dune shoes she buys and handbags to match are far from ' middle range' prices BUT I would never dream on mentioning to her how she should buy cheaper shoes like mine because it's her personal choice how she spends her money. FWIW I do sometimes find when shopping in Asdas that the sell by dates are quite short and the stock has the newest date at the front. I'm not usually insecure and can normally think of a quip back but as said I was probably just really tired ( even though not a toddler as previously mentioned I am 50+ and find a few nights in a row quite tiring
)

That made me laugh - so true! (Am in WA too). Thr excitement over bloody Aldi! Confused

Glastokitty · 07/11/2016 02:55

But Koala, how impressed and in awe of me are you? I opened an Aldi, AND I got a free trolley full of groceries. I think if it had been a slow news day I might have ended up on the news and everything! Grin. I am virtually Perth royalty now I reckon!

KoalaDownUnder · 07/11/2016 03:14

Glasto, I'm actually shocked they didn't cover it on TodayTonight. That's legit news around these parts. You could start your own blog now, and have a launch at the Subi Hotel. An Eagle or Docker might walk past you while you were there.

Grin Grin #aussiehero.

Queen Glasyokitty of Aldi, Opener of Store, Aussie Hero and Bringer of Decent Supermarkets

NathalieM · 07/11/2016 10:35

Sounds like a little bit of jealousy to me! However silly this is, i too wouldn't like somebody sticking their nose into my business like this. I know when I'm having a 'poor' month I envy the people buying their food in Waitrose - let's face it the whole experience of food shopping is far nicer in both M&S & Waitrose - so when I can afford to I will shop there, as you say you work hard for that money!

Loubilou09 · 07/11/2016 12:48

Urrgghhh "Asda's" why do people add an 's to a shop name? I would judge you on that far more than shopping at M&S

FurryLittleTwerp · 07/11/2016 12:57

There was an Asda round the back of where I worked in the late 90s. I know it was another century, but did it really need to label the Pasta & Rice aisle "Foreign Foods"? Confused Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 07/11/2016 13:13

I don't know if the experience is nicer in Waitrose. I'm so used to Aldi checkout speeds that in Waitrose it is so frustratingly, glacially slow. I stand there getting all anxious, resisting the urge to shout 'just fucking get on with it'.

Grocery shopping isn't really something to turn into a nice experience, it's just one of those 'get on with and get back to something more interesting' chores and paying 2 or 3 times as much for what is often a very similar product doesn't particularly make things 'nicer'. Yes some things are much nicer in Waitrose, but some things are effectively the same, or not really worth the premium price.

Furry There is an Asda near where I work, and they definitely put their quite limited and conservative selection of pasta, rice, spices etc in an aisle named 'foreign muck foods'. I put it down to much of the local population being elderley and hence possibly more conservative in their food preferences.

It was only removed in the last 5/10 years when the shop was refurbished and the other two Asdas in the city didn't have the same sign.

StrawberryQuik · 07/11/2016 14:01

MrsKoala The one in Croydon is still awful. Went there once, never again!

My DMs local Asda oth is very nice, especially the homewares.

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2016 15:27

The "nicer shopping experience" in Waitrose always makes me want to go berserk with a machine gun....

pinkflufyunicorns · 07/11/2016 15:59

Next time just take your ASDA branded reusable shopping bags into M&S and no-one will realise. Not that it should matter. I buy my food there every week!

SpunkyMummy · 07/11/2016 16:51

seville

I disagree. I love grocery shopping.😊

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2016 17:11

On the strength of this thread I went and did a big shop in Asda this afternoon. I''m usually an Aldi/Morrison's woman. It had absolutely everything I needed except fresh ginger, which they had run out of and were very apologetic about. I also bought two very nice towels- good range of colours- and two oven slides.

It was obviously much less Hyacinth Bucket than M&S or Waitrose. Which was good, because it meant that I didn't have to kill anyone.
