To be hacked off that I have been judged for shopping in m&s?

After finishing a night shift this morning popped into M&S for some shopping for me and DP...parking was near, I couldn't be arsed to fight my way around Asda, Sainsbury's etc... I came out with about 4 bags and quite a few of their 3 for £10 offers on food and 3 for £7 along with some fruit etc.. for my packed lunches. I work hard for my money and am not afraid to grab a bargain in other supermarkets it was just that I wanted the quickness of this store and fancied treating myself too. I came out with my shopping and bumped into friends daughter ..she looks at my shopping bags and has a sarcastic grin on her face saying 'oh marks' I say yes I couldn't be arsed to go to Asdas etc just finished work wanna get home...well she said if that was me I'd walk to Asda's to save myself ALL that money hitching judge pants to under chin AIBU to think that a friends DD (aged 30) who will only wear Dune shoes and who's DH and her both have good jobs should not piss me off big time have to judge where I chose to shop?? You made it about judgment yourself. She only said 'ohhh marks' and you behaved like you'd been caught out!

You shouldn't feel that way about yourself, that you don't deserve some nice things. Part of the advantage of working hard like you is that you can afford to make your life a bit easier too. You don't have to go to Asda when it's busy because you can afford not to.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2016 09:27

If that's what you want to spend your money on-.

Personally, I think m&s convenience food is not very nice, overpriced and only as popular as it is because of a massive PR job feeding the paranoia of the socially insecure. Which pisses me off.

Sadandconfusednamechanger · 06/11/2016 09:28

As someone who also would be classed as a SAH carer for my DD (in that I claim carer's allowance and would find it very difficult to work around her needs) I can totally empathise. Also, my DD has always struggled with Asda and I can see why. I would totally choose to go into a different and more expensive shop if it was easier for me and I was knackered. In fact I do it all the time as we live near to a Co-op (which is overpriced apart from their special offers) and I will often go there rather than the much cheaper Morrisons which is 15 minutes' walk away. Because I am knackered and don't drive. And pre DD when I did work and had a baby/toddler son to get back to I would have totally stopped off at the train station M&S food on the way home. You pay the extra price to make the problem go away, which IMO is fine. Flowers

PickAChew · 06/11/2016 09:33

Asda makes me want to murder people.

Usually shop in m&s and will happily fill a basket in Aldo, if I'm passing.

haveacupoftea · 06/11/2016 09:33

I really want to go to M&S now for their victoria sponge muffins

peggyundercrackers · 06/11/2016 09:34

Why would you care about what someone else thinks of where you shop?

Namechangeemergency · 06/11/2016 09:40

I have a little fantasy that pops up every time I go into a M&S (no, nothing like that).
I would exist entirely on ready prepped and made M&S food. My breakfast, lunch and dinner would consist of pre prepared veggies, cereal already in a little pot, lovely veggie dinners and soups and yummy puddings.

It would be awesome

I hate cooking, I don't even like food much and I am sick of thinking about what to feed my DCs every.single.day.

PaulDacresConscience · 06/11/2016 09:41

I'd respond with a big smile and 'Good for you. It's nobody else's business how and where you choose to spend your money, is it? I find people who judge others on things like that to be rather rude and ill-mannered. See you later.'

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 06/11/2016 09:44

Next time, have something cutting pithy to respond with about her Dune shoes.

Or just rise above it. Smile

I love M & S foods btw. Their entire fashion and homeware can go tits up for all I care, but ze food, it must be preserved.

Gowgirl · 06/11/2016 09:45

Why on earth would you shop in Asda if you didn't have to, ditto Iceland Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/11/2016 09:47

OP, you need to stop caring what other people think about something as benign as where you shop and what you shop for. I shop everywhere because some things are just better in one shop than another. Aldi ketchup is the only stuff I will ever touch, M&S pitta chips are the only crisps I eat, Morrisons and Asda are excellent for fresh fish.

Stop caring what other people think, just raise one eyebrow and laugh at them.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/11/2016 09:48

NickName. TBH I can't remember what I couldn't find, it was a couple of years ago. It just seemed to be row upon row of readymade meals, confectionery and snacks. I even asked a shop assistant for something only to be told they didn't stock it. So I never go back unless looking for clothes or school uniform for dd. Dd has a lovely ladies dressing gown from there and much nicer for her than the m&s ones as it has a face and ears on the hood and she's loving her pyjamas so all swings and roundabouts.

sandgrown · 06/11/2016 09:48

Name change. I would do that too if I could afford it.Morrisons for everyday and M&S or Booths for treats.

coconutpie · 06/11/2016 09:50

PickAChew - Aldo? You mean Aldi Grin

GinAndTunic · 06/11/2016 09:51

YABU and petty and childish.

BadKnee · 06/11/2016 09:52

I think it was as pp said - she was just grasping for something to say other than simply "hello" which might have seemed dismissive.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 06/11/2016 09:52

YANBU but don't make excuses to her next time, it's none of her business. Just cross her off your Xmas card list instead.

Newmanwannabe · 06/11/2016 09:54

I'm not really sure why you care so much. You're an adult. You don't have to justify yourself to anyone

Revealall · 06/11/2016 09:58

Asda has as much basic food as the next supermarket! All the ones I've been in have a meat counter a fish counter and a bakery.
In fact the only place that doesn't sell a lot of basics is M&S because it's all ready meals and pre cut up stuff.

Agree you being way too defensive and you shouldn't buy in to the " this shop is better than that shop" propaganda ( unless you are supporting a small local business).

KitKats28 · 06/11/2016 10:00

Why do people on these threads always come out with the "she must be jealous" line??

Why the hell would anyone have the energy to be jealous of where someone does their bloody food shopping FFS?

NicknameUsed · 06/11/2016 10:00

"Why on earth would you shop in Asda if you didn't have to,"

Why on earth are you so snobby about Asda?

I tend to shop in the large one in Handsworth in Sheffield if I go, and I can find ethnic foods there that I can't find in my local Tesco. Admittedly it is a huge store, and I can't remember the last time I couldn't find what I wanted.

Mummyof all supermarkets sell ready meals. In my experience Asda doesn't sell any more than any other supermarket.

ClinkyMonkey · 06/11/2016 10:10

My sister-in-law said 'oooo M&S' when I brought out the biscuits a couple of days ago. I thought she was just having a larf. Crikey, maybe she was judging me ...... ! She scoffed enough of them mind you. They were blooming gorgeous.

Sallystyle · 06/11/2016 10:11

I love Asda. It sells pretty much everything. I love their school uniform and children's clothes.

I also love Marks and Aldi.

It's really strange when some people I know won't be caught dead in Asda and will only set foot into Waitrose or Marks, like Asda is beneath them.

They are just supermarkets FFS.

ForgotStuff · 06/11/2016 10:11

My first thought would be that she was teasing rather than judging.
