To be hacked off that I have been judged for shopping in m&s?

After finishing a night shift this morning popped into M&S for some shopping for me and DP...parking was near, I couldn't be arsed to fight my way around Asda, Sainsbury's etc... I came out with about 4 bags and quite a few of their 3 for £10 offers on food and 3 for £7 along with some fruit etc.. for my packed lunches. I work hard for my money and am not afraid to grab a bargain in other supermarkets it was just that I wanted the quickness of this store and fancied treating myself too. I came out with my shopping and bumped into friends daughter ..she looks at my shopping bags and has a sarcastic grin on her face saying 'oh marks' I say yes I couldn't be arsed to go to Asdas etc just finished work wanna get home...well she said if that was me I'd walk to Asda's to save myself ALL that money hitching judge pants to under chin AIBU to think that a friends DD (aged 30) who will only wear Dune shoes and who's DH and her both have good jobs should not piss me off big time have to judge where I chose to shop?? I have some Dune tan sandals that would make you weep with their loveliness

I don't think the op was actually slagging off Dune. Just a PP misconstrued the ops point. The point being that the person critiquing her shopping was a slavish higher end brand devotee herself.

TheoriginalLEM · 06/11/2016 12:03

ive never really liked M&S. ive triedbut it is always a disappointment.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/11/2016 12:13

Crab sticks never contain crab, even the ones sold in Waitrose, hence why they are actually called seafood sticks. The Baltic States must be a hotbed of crab stick manufacture, as Waitrose Essential ones are 'Produced in Lithuania from fish caught in the Pacific Ocean' Confused.

OP, I know what you mean. I shop at a wide range of supermarkets from Aldi to Waitrose/M&S as I pass nearly all of them on my way home from work so just rotate according to what we need/I feel like and I deliberately hid some of the Waitrose products last night when we had a family party because I knew MIL and SIL would make snarky comments about 'it being OK for some being able to afford Waitrose' and me being 'posh' for shopping there, despite me being a very long way from posh.

The fact is that I go for quality not quantity and save a fortune by not buying 90% of the tat that they spend their money on and a lot of our shopping comes from Aldi anyway, there are just a few things we like from other shops and the cheapest place to get DPs favourite coffee is actually Waitrose by a long way. They still made snarky comments because the pork pies came from the butchers not the supermarket. But I just let it wash over me. They can think what they like because they are wrong.

As an aside, I get quite a bit from M&S too but it has all been reduced usually to about a third of the full price because the new Simply Food I pass on the way home from work hasn't found it's feet with stock levels yet and you can get some great bargains.

You're judging yourself. That's why you're justifying it with mentioning the parking and the offers and how you couldn't be arsed to walk to Asda.

This ^

SpunkyMummy · 06/11/2016 12:24

some Dune shoes are actually quite lovely.

Their "block heel court shoes" (these with the round toe) and the loafers are incredibly ccomfortable.

I think we should buy our food from farmers' markets. 😆

Exactly. You are actually judging yourself and others. That is quite snobbish.

lottiegarbanzo · 06/11/2016 12:42

You started it OP. You opened a conversation about personal rationales for shopping in particular shops. She just joined in. Everyday social chit chat.

Why do you actually care where she'd rather shop?

Enjoy your lunch!

FoxesOnSocks · 06/11/2016 12:43

Anytime I've said 'oooh Marks' it's a pee take not a judgement. Pee take out of the idea that Marks and Spencer is the place we're all aiming to buy our lettuce from and that if you do that you are somehow better.

Some stuff in M&S is lovely, some stuff isn't. Same as every other shop in the world. This is along the same lines (just with a higher average price) as the countless what should I buy Aldi/Lidl? It's all about snobbery (inverted and the right way up) and self consciousness.

ScrubbedPine · 06/11/2016 13:00

Yes, agree that you seem to have interpreted an expression as judging your shopping. I'm not from the UK so if someone had said 'Marks?' in a sarcastic or quizzical voice, I wouldn't have known what they meant and would have had to ask.

LilQueenie · 06/11/2016 13:07

M&s is better than any other supermarket and so it there reduction prices. Sounds as if your friend is somewhat jealous. Your money your choice.

RubbishMantra · 06/11/2016 13:10

Namechange, the last time i went into Iceland, they had the 10'poles on the shopping trollies. Reminded me of bumper cars. I didn't realise it was to stop you stealing them!

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2016 13:11

As I said, M&S play on people's social insecurity. I had to be a deliberate marketing ploy. So cynical and unpleasant. But effective!

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2016 13:20

I'm not getting the dune shoes thing to be honest.dune is a kinda middle of the road high street chain.

How do uou even know she only wears dune shoes? And why is it remotely relevant?

I get the impression that uou think it's admirable to shop cheap and anyone who doesn't is some how up themselves and uou think uou got caught at it.

If that's the case, it's very weird.

MrGrumpy01 · 06/11/2016 13:28

What with all the 'she must be jealous' comments. Weird.

I'm jealous that people have a Waitrose near them (for example) but not that they shop there. Why on earth would I be jealous?

Bluepowder · 06/11/2016 13:42

Do the socially secure feel the need to shop at M and S? How do they target them? Curious because my m in law is a massive fan and socially insecure.

NicknameUsed · 06/11/2016 13:51

"dune is a kinda middle of the road high street chain."

I wouldn't class their prices as middle of the road. I would class them as higher end price-wise.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 06/11/2016 13:51

Are people really snobby about shopping for food in M&S? I often buy things in there eg their Italian meal deals, 3 for £7. Much cheaper than a takeaway so hardly a luxury purchase but quite tasty.

FoxesOnSocks · 06/11/2016 13:53

No Bluepowder the social insecure are feel that shopping at Marks is a Important Thing and being able to do so means that they are Better Than Others (and so if they don't and others do shop there then the other must think they are better than them)

PickAChew · 06/11/2016 13:58

No judgement there, then, foxes.

TheNaze73 · 06/11/2016 14:01

It's hardly Fortnum & Mason. Don't sweat it

Namechangeemergency · 06/11/2016 14:02

nickname me too. I only have my Dune shoes because I bought them off a FB selling page unworn.

They are not my idea of middle of the road.

New Look are middle of the road, Shoe Zone are cheapy.

Dune, Office etc are beyond my usual budget.

Although I got a lovely pair of Converse in the Office sale for £17

SpunkyMummy · 06/11/2016 14:03

I agree with bluntness.

But they are incredibly comfortable.

MauiWest · 06/11/2016 14:06

Dune boots retails around £100 to £150, heels between £40 to £80. Obviously a bit more pricey than Primark, but these prices are hardly top end. How much do you think a pair of boots cost in M&S?

MauiWest · 06/11/2016 14:08

If you think that Dune is high end, I'd love to know what you think of the shoe section in net-a-porter Grin
