To be hacked off that I have been judged for shopping in m&s?

After finishing a night shift this morning popped into M&S for some shopping for me and DP...parking was near, I couldn't be arsed to fight my way around Asda, Sainsbury's etc... I came out with about 4 bags and quite a few of their 3 for £10 offers on food and 3 for £7 along with some fruit etc.. for my packed lunches. I work hard for my money and am not afraid to grab a bargain in other supermarkets it was just that I wanted the quickness of this store and fancied treating myself too. I came out with my shopping and bumped into friends daughter ..she looks at my shopping bags and has a sarcastic grin on her face saying 'oh marks' I say yes I couldn't be arsed to go to Asdas etc just finished work wanna get home...well she said if that was me I'd walk to Asda's to save myself ALL that money hitching judge pants to under chin AIBU to think that a friends DD (aged 30) who will only wear Dune shoes and who's DH and her both have good jobs should not piss me off big time have to judge where I chose to shop?? People can be annoying. I shop variously in Aldi or Lidl or possibly Tesco. But we've been busy this last couple of weeks so I did an Ocado online shop.
I get comments for occasionally popping out to the Local shop for a bought sandwhiches - it's really a nice excuse to get a short walk at lunchtime.

AgainPlease · 06/11/2016 10:31

Wtf is a Dune shoe? Is it like a croc? And what does that have to do with them having good jobs? And if they have good jobs, why are they shopping in ASDA?

I hardly ever buy food in M&S as it's nowhere near home or work. When I do though, I buy fresh ingredients rather than ready meals & am usually amazed at what good value it is!

Sunshineonacloudyday · 06/11/2016 10:42

I am shopping there for Christmas ignore her she is jealous.

MrGrumpy01 · 06/11/2016 10:43

I would judge you for buying carrier bags. It's my new thing. Wink

tbh though Marks is seen as a bit special, in a kind of treat yourself type of way. So if you have gone there you are having nicer things this time. It shouldn't be really, food is their best arm so it must be coming more main stream.

I also don't get the Asda snobbery. They just sell food. A loaf of Hovis is a loaf of Hovis. Have moral objections by all means but a lot if the food is the same. I don't go often as it is not that convenient for me plus I just use Sainsburys home delivery .

AwaywiththePixies27 · 06/11/2016 10:44

YNBU. I'm 30 and I shop in Marks Food Store sometimes as a treat! Waitrose is nearer my bus stop though and I'm lazy No business of hers, it's not her that's got to eat it! You are unreasonable for not bringing me any if their mini cream cakes though OP Wink That used to be me and DDs Friday treat on the way home from uni.

Easier said than done but try to ignore it. I've been judged too. DD is extremely tall for her age and I specifically get her primary school clothes from M&S or Debenhams etc. I was once speaking to a school parent in the summer who was looking for the gingham dress for his daughter. I helpfully chime in that I got DD 2 for £16 in M&S last June / July (she's still wearing them now so got my money's worth! Grin School Dad: "oh yeah I forgot you shop in those sorta places". Hmm

Spend your money how you wish too. She sounds a bit goady if I'm honest. Enjoy your treats. Brew

Laiste · 06/11/2016 10:45

I wouldn't in a million years notice what bags someone was carrying or think anything! This is all so odd.

If pushed i think ''good for you for making the effort to bargain hunt'' if you shop around, and ''good for you for being able to afford M&S''. That's if really pushed. Who cares where anyone shops?

Sunshineonacloudyday · 06/11/2016 10:46

My main shop is Tesco I order food to come to me because I can't drive. Marks and Spencer's is a treat especially at Christmas.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 06/11/2016 10:47

I really don't understand supermarket snobbery. Where has it come from? I'm talking in general here, not this thread.
Is it just based on the cost of the food? More expensive = better in some way?

SpunkyMummy · 06/11/2016 10:49

Why did she notice that? I wouldn't notice that. How strange Confused

I do have a few pairs of dune shoes. They're nice but nothing special.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 06/11/2016 10:53

I love M&S food and would live on their ready meals if I could afford it. She was jealous OP: ignore her.

Personally I think that shopping in Asda is a waste of money: children's clothes last a few weeks, fruit and vegetables are tasteless and it's not that cheap.

HoneyDragon · 06/11/2016 10:53

It's just yet another worthy wank off

Like the ethical wank people like to make them selves feel better, if they are spending less, doing more than others in society.

Let them enjoy it.

You enjoy your treat.

Fwiw. My nearest two grocery shops are a M&S and a Waitrose. I should've saved money by buying a house in the expensive area instead, so I could have the Spar across the road and Tesco down the street Grin

Namechangeemergency · 06/11/2016 10:56

We get all our food shopping from Asda.
What on earth do people imagine its like in there?

Its a modern, well stocked, slick supermarket. Its not like some Soviet food distribution centre.

Olddear · 06/11/2016 10:56

'Ooohh Marks?'
'Yeah, 'Fraid so. Some mix up at Fortnum & Masons', so hamper doesn't arrive 'til tomorrow....what can you do? Had to slum it in Marks!'

Bluepowder · 06/11/2016 10:58

You've just made be snort into my cup of tea, olddear.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 06/11/2016 11:03

olddear 😂

SpunkyMummy · 06/11/2016 11:12

Just tell her that you usually go to the farmer's market. That should shut her up 😄

SpunkyMummy · 06/11/2016 11:13

Olddear 😂😂

JellyBelli · 06/11/2016 11:14

OP, dont be defensive about where you shop, it doesnt sound like a healthy relationship at all. She didnt even have to say anything and she pushed your buttons.

noblegiraffe · 06/11/2016 11:16

All Asdas are not equal. My local Asda is fine, a normal supermarket. Then I went to an Asda on holiday in Devon. Bloody hell. The worst layout ever, I couldn't find anything. Empty shelves in the fridge section and stuff just chucked on shelves or in boxes on the floor in other sections. It was like a supermarket jumble sale. If I lived there I'd definitely shop somewhere else.

FoxesOnSocks · 06/11/2016 11:16

Well you might have had a chance at being reasonable if you too weren't judgemental. What brand of shoe should a 30 year old wear?

"Personally I think that shopping in Asda is a waste of money: children's clothes last a few weeks, fruit and vegetables are tasteless and it's not that cheap"

Your children must be very heavy on their clothes. The fruit and veg is the same quality that I buy anywhere else. Perhaps Sheffield has better buyers than where you live.
