To think MN is suddenly full of hard right extremists?

Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:31

I can't believe what I'm reading today.

Some of the comments of the bacon/mosque attack sentencing thread and also on the Jack Monroe/ sanction petition thread are just breathtakingly nasty. Other threads too.

What's happened? They aren't all new names. Some are. Is it an influx altering the mood here? Or does it reflect the national shift?

ArmySal · 03/11/2016 11:33

Probably just differing opinions? There are thousands of users of MN.

Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:35

No, it's a bit more than that Sal

There have always been differing views.

This is real spite coming out from the shadows. Do check out the bacon thread (as an e.g.) to see what I mean.

The overall audience has changed over recent years OP. It was very middle class and left for a while back there.

Now it's very "hunny" and there's a nasty Mail-like flavour to many posts.

Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:40

Yes user, I think you're right.

RockinHippy · 03/11/2016 11:40

YANBU, I have noticed too & have also been pretty sickened by the lack of compassion & know it all, know nowt replies :(

Yes, I see what you mean about the bacon thread Confused

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/11/2016 11:42

I think YAB a bit U.

I'm not sure MN is suddenly full of hard right extremists - it's just representative of the gradual population shift to the right. It is very noticeable now though that folk have moved so far right there is a greater preponderance of WTF views. It's not just MN, it is the prevailing view in E and W.

And it's pretty terrifying.

Lunde · 03/11/2016 11:42

Perhaps it's a result of a couple of MN threads reported in the Daily Fail each day

PinkSwimGoggles · 03/11/2016 11:44

political bots?
some, esp on brexit treads sound more 'hired and following a script' than 'real people'

Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:45

Well, maybe 'full' and 'extremists' were not quite the right words.

But I do find it chilling.

OP posts:
joshlymanlover · 03/11/2016 11:45

I wouldn't call it far right, there is certainly more people giving different views which imho is a good thing

TheWoodlander · 03/11/2016 11:46

YANBU, I've noticed this. I blame the Daily Mail and Brexit.

There are some horrible posts on that thread, I was Shock

Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:47

Yes the DM thread-lifting could well have resulted in an influx of their readers Sad

It's nice to now I'm not the only one noticing the shift and feeling dismayed.

OP posts:
Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:48

Hatred, contempt and disdain are never good things josh. I'm sorry that you're not able to see that.

OP posts:
Thinnestofthinice · 03/11/2016 11:49

Are people not allowed to have views that are not left wing anymore? I say this as someone firmly in the middle... why do the left seem to think that their views are the only valid ones?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/11/2016 11:50

No I don't think there is a 'hard right extremists' any more than there is 'hard left extremists' tbh.

Yes there will be some threads that are bad, but on the whole, no.

As for the Brexit threads, yes there have been very nasty comments by both remainers and leavers.

M00MINMAMMA · 03/11/2016 11:50

YANBU - seems too many coming on Mumsnet to troll rather than support other mums. The bacon thread is appalling.

Manumission · 03/11/2016 11:52

If you AS me thin you'll see I get a bit testy with any extreme.

But what is trying about the hard left is not nastiness.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/11/2016 11:56

But what is trying about the hard left is not nastiness.

It certainly can be.

FlyingElbows · 03/11/2016 11:56

I am far from being a right wing extremist but I absolutely stand by what I wrote on the Jack Monroe petition thread. I am fully in support of the point (and would gladly sign I'm support of a proposal put Gerrard by someone with some proper clout) but totally against it being appropriated for self promotion. I'm not off to commit genocide, I simply hold a different opinion.

Manumission · 03/11/2016 12:00

Critiques of Jack M aren't really what I meant so much elbows TBH. More the stuff attacking the welfare system and claimants.

OP posts:
Manumission · 03/11/2016 12:02

(The actual nasty stuff)

I was baffled that Jack M became the focus of the thread and disagreed with a lot of that, but that isn't really the aspect of that thread that seemed 'nasty' to me.

OP posts:
ToastDemon · 03/11/2016 12:04

Yes I agree with you. More right-wing, more ignorant, and nastier.
Lots of people who deliberately stick the boot in to posters who have posted, often about sensitive issues, in good faith, just being nasty for the sake it of.

OurBlanche · 03/11/2016 12:07

More the stuff attacking the welfare system and claimants.

I find it sad that we can't have a proper discussion about the very real need for welfare reform without having both extreme sides throwing around the emotional blackmail and insults.

Much the same with the bacon thread... it really isn't the bacon / religion / crime that is the real issue. It is the obvious inequality in sentencing that could cause even more such stupid, hate filled acts.

And to be honest, anything JackM says these days makes me pause and wonder why? What does she get out of it? What self aggrandising thing is she promoting?

I have posted on the bacon thread, but can only assume I am not one of those you consider to be 'breathtakingly nasty', mainly because I don't think any post on there actually is!
