I've just had an awful scare and I'm so frightened, need calming down. Just scrolling down Facebook and there's a Sun headline....Nuclear war could be imminent, troops sent near to Russian border. It's so so scary.

All my bills go out on the 1st so if it's going to happen I'd like to know, I'd much rather spend all that money on chocolate and frivolous shit than rent on a house that'll soon be rubble.

Also, will house being rubble affect me getting my deposit back?

Bananabread123 · 27/10/2016 23:06

Just read the article... It's scaremonging crap. So what the Russians move some ships to one of their own ports that happened to be armed with cruise missiles... If Putin wanted to nuke us he has 1,000s of inter-continental ballistic missiles... The Russians, and the Soviets before them, have had these since the 70s - nothing's changed.

Lynnm63 · 27/10/2016 23:08

ferretfred I've had a new kitchen too. Do you think....gulp......that we are responsible for WW3 getting closer?

MummyToOneGirl · 27/10/2016 23:09

Why do they have to have these bloody missiles. What good would it serve to nuke us all?

Bananabread123 · 27/10/2016 23:11

Surely if Putin is really planning Nuclear war then he can be stopped?

Putin may be many things but he's not mad... Starting a nuclear war would be the maddest thing possible..... But I'm not sure what magical powers you think the West has to stop him were he to do this (which he categorically won't!)

Lynnm63 · 27/10/2016 23:11

Tara I've said fuck the diet on the basis that if this is end of days the size of my thighs is irrelevant therefore I've eaten a box of After Eights Grin

MummyToOneGirl · 27/10/2016 23:12

Bananabread but how do you know he isn't mad?

FerretFred · 27/10/2016 23:15

It's down to us! Maybe, just maybe our new dishwashers have been deemed WMDs!

Oh hell. I start on the bathroom next week...... if aliens land the following week it's a good hint for me not to decorate the front room!

hopetobehappy · 27/10/2016 23:15

Some of these comments have been exactly what I needed, thank you all for putting things in perspective, sone of them actually made me chuckle, which is amazing considering how scared I am. I wish I wasn't such a worrier, i can't help it. Now I've calmed down a bit I'm just hoping no one comes along and says something worrying.

And here's a thought. Apparently I am 'life limited' (nice way of saying going to snuff it early!) .

I shall be really miffed if we do have a war. My life assurance won't pay out for that but will for my illness!

helpimitchy · 27/10/2016 23:23

If you go onto the App Store, there's an app which will calculate how much, and what type, of damage your area will sustain in the event of a nuclear bomb being dropped. It gives blast radius data according to the size of bomb used.

wasonthelist · 27/10/2016 23:24

YABVU Sun is a comic not a serious newspaper in any way. See also story every Summer about how it's going to be a terrible winter, vice-versa in Winter. It is all 100% bollocks and is not news.

hopetobehappy · 27/10/2016 23:25

Feretfred Grin that description of the Russian aircraft carrier was hilarious. Thank you.

Mummy

Putin has spent his life carefully and determinedly (and yes brutally at times) sought to make Russia a great nation with him as a great leader.... And though we may dislike his methods, he is succeeding. Russia is far more powerful and respected than it was when he came to power in 2000.

The utter destruction of Russia (which would be the inevitable result of it launching a nuclear attack as the U.S. responded with hundreds of not thousands of nukes) is the absolute last thing he would ever wish for. He wants to be seen as a great man, not the man who ended civilisation!

MummyToOneGirl · 27/10/2016 23:33

Thanks for explaining Bananabread I feel less worried now. You are right, it would make no sense whatsoever for him to launch a nuclear war.

hopetobehappy · 27/10/2016 23:34

I so hope you're right Bananabread, but a very reassuring post.

Bananabread123 · 27/10/2016 23:38

Why do they have to have these bloody missiles. What good would it serve to nuke us all?

If one side has them, the other side will want them to feel safe... Either all sides decide to give them up, or they each have so many that any attack on the other would lead to a counter-attack that would utterly destroy you, such that you may as well detonate your bombs in your own cities... The concept is known as MAD, short for mutually assured destruction. Crazy perhaps, but it's kept us from a war between superpowers for 70 years...

RedToothBrush · 27/10/2016 23:42

Did you buy the newspaper after seeing the headline? Or click on a link after seeing the headline? Did the headline make you want to read more?

Its click bait or to sell newspapers. Fear sells.

Bananabread123 · 27/10/2016 23:43

Even if Putin inexplicably went mad all of a sudden, his cronies certainly wouldn't want to be nuked to oblivion... They're enjoying being rich and powerful. They'd not stand idly by and let him. Why would they?

Bananabread123 · 27/10/2016 23:50

Worry is never good, but if you are going to worry, at least let it be something that's worth worrying about.... rather than being concerned that a man thousands of miles away, who shows all the signs that he's in full command of his senses, might go stark raving mad and order his generals (who in all likelihood wouldn't have gone mad simultaneously) to try and kill you!

hopetobehappy · 28/10/2016 00:03

Goodness no redtoothbrush if their intentions are to make you click ON the headline it doesn't do it for me. The headline doesn't make ME want to read more. Run for the hills more like. I saw the headline, felt sick, came straight on here to be calmed. Smile

ferretfred I have a confession we are in the middle of doing our bathroom and our house is nearly finished after 8 years. It's all making sense now, the second we finish this bloody house it's going up in smoke! Maybe I need to leave one tiny job unfinished to save Mankind.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/10/2016 00:25

Don't worry Lynn. DH is spending all his time not getting our bathroom done. The apocalypse better not bloody happen before I get a decent bath.

VanillaSugarandChipSpice · 28/10/2016 00:28

Waves at MrsTP and her bathroom woes.

So I book a holiday next year or spend the money stockpiling beans & candles?

SquatBetty · 28/10/2016 07:02

No I can't believe Putin would press the button either. He's just not that stupid. The despotic weirdo in charge of North Korea though is another matter..
