I've just had an awful scare and I'm so frightened, need calming down. Just scrolling down Facebook and there's a Sun headline....Nuclear war could be imminent, troops sent near to Russian border. It's so so scary.

It's the Sun so take everything with a sea full of salt.
That said the UK are sending 800 troops and equipment to Estonia to aid NATO.

redshoeblueshoe · 27/10/2016 20:43

Move to Liverpool. No one reads the Sun there - its against the law

CharminglyGawky · 27/10/2016 20:44

I think the state of the world right now is very scary.

But I think nuclear war is a step beyond what any of the world leaders (even Putin) would be willing to go. The Cold War was scary as well and yet no nukes were fired. Plus I don't think we are anywhere near there yet anyway.

The sun in scaremongering and trying to sell newspapers. They are alarmist and not worth believing!

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2016 20:46

Billy Connolly talks about this. My parents were conceived as the bombs fell over Europe. My Grandfather didn't make it back alive from bombing the Nazis. I'm here, and so is my child, because they thought, "ahh fuck it, let's have a shag". Good for them I say.

BoinkAlongQuietly · 27/10/2016 20:46

Oh yeah and Hussein had WMD on a 45 minute call.

No need to be scared.

alwayshappy101 · 27/10/2016 20:47

You have me worried...

Just googled it,and news stories about imminent nuclear war in:
express,
Independent,
Daily mail,
metro.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 27/10/2016 20:47

Just had a quick look and can't see that headline anywhere on the Sun page.

OP you need to calm down.

tictactoad · 27/10/2016 20:47

Meh. As a child of the 70's and 80's this stuff was always getting trotted out. Didn't happen then and it won't happen now. Even if it does what do you think you could do about it?

TheCatsMother99 · 27/10/2016 20:48

Ignore it. The media will tell you what you want to hear and not tell you the stuff they don't.

tupperwareAARGGH · 27/10/2016 20:50

My niece is doing law apparently they keep mentioning that a big war is on the horizon when doing the world/euro politics bit.

NovemberInDailyFailLand · 27/10/2016 20:51

Let's not forget the 'Sun' has also brought gems such as this to our collective attention:

To be really scared by this Sun headline.
PhoenixRisingSlowly · 27/10/2016 20:51

The current situation with Russia worries me and it isn't just the Sun reporting it, it's all over other mainstream media as well. I am concerned but not terrified - I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to unleash nuclear weapons. It's definitely not an ideal situation right now globally but I think you can rest easy on that particular worry. Don't panic.

hopetobehappy · 27/10/2016 20:51

So it's not just in the sun then?

OP posts:
bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 27/10/2016 20:51

I'm not worried. It's a case of 'been here before' far back through the decades before the millennium. You just have to google 'Russia and US' and click on the news tab on the google search and there are tons of news articles from various news agencies regarding the conflict between the two states. I think what is universally agreed is that Russia and the US are having a few disagreements. How far and concerning these are depends on the news you decide to read and how far you go to believing them.

I only ever studied sociology up to A Level but came to the conclusion that not one news agency can ever be trusted to report the absolute truth. I think it is bloody damned hard to be 'neutral' in times of conflict.

Read whichever newspaper you want, watch whichever news agency you wish BUT never, ever take what you read and see as truth. I always believe that to get a 'fuller picture' of what is really going on is to read and watch a variety of news.

Pluto30 · 27/10/2016 20:52

No one with a single brain cell would start a nuclear war. Let's get real. It's an empty threat. It'll never happen.

nixinoo · 27/10/2016 20:52

What are you going to do about it anyway? If we get blasted into oblivion it's not like anything we do can change it. And anyway, ITS THE SUN FFS!

glueandstick · 27/10/2016 20:54

The sun is only fit to use as a protective layer for cleaning stuff on.

It contains as much news as a cat's litter tray.

Do not worry. Do not become one of these hysterical Facebook daily mail types.

VanillaSugarandChipSpice · 27/10/2016 20:55

Didn't David Cameron say that WW3 would break out if we quit Europe? Maybe they're all lining up waiting for March 2017 and May to push the Brexit button...

chickychickyparmparm · 27/10/2016 20:55

So it's not just in the sun then?

If the Metro and the Daily Mail are the only publications to join The Sun in saying nuclear war is imminent I think we can safely assume it won't happen.

(can't find the Independent story?)

BoffinMum · 27/10/2016 20:55

Well I am delighted that all my prepping in relation to reading apocalypse threads here on MN won't have been in vain. I think I have enough tins and gaffer tape to last several decades.

UsainWho · 27/10/2016 20:56

See this, an interesting viewpoint on it.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-37766688

Don't worry anyway, Mr Trump will sort Putin out ;-)

BoffinMum · 27/10/2016 20:56

My great-uncle used to design nuclear bunkers for rich Hollywood people for a living (amongst other things).

capricorn12 · 27/10/2016 20:57

Even if this was true , there is chuff all you can do about it so forget it!

Lynnm63 · 27/10/2016 20:57

We live a few miles away from the main airbase that scrambles every time Putin plays Crazy Ivan with the RAF. I guess we will be nuked in the first wave. I guess I should ditch the diet, eat chocolate cake and drink more wine if I'm about to be nuked.

Bertucci · 27/10/2016 20:58

My dad firmly believes if Trump is elected it will mark the beginning of The End.

I can't be bothered to be bothered.
