To think Toby Young deserves scorn for this article?

Apologies for linking to the Daily Mail, but I've used a service that denies them advertising revenue: <a class="break-all" href="https://anonym.to/?www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3869182/Why-Lefties-misty-eyed-movie-romanticises-Benefits-Britain-says-TOBY-YOUNG.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">anonym.to/?www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3869182/Why-Lefties-misty-eyed-movie-romanticises-Benefits-Britain-says-TOBY-YOUNG.html

Aside from the basic errors (it's 100minutes long, not nearly 3 hours), it's just an awful article. The fact that Toby Young thinks everyone claiming benefits is a smoking/gambling/drinking loudmouth is just offensive. I'm shocked - not that it was published - but that he thinks his opinion is the opinion of everyone.

I'd love to see him survive on benefits. I wonder if he'd be saying the same things then?

Old dawn Donna provided the evidence up above, so why you keep going on is very telling to the kind of person you are.

Esa assessor said I walked half an hour to school then half an hour back twice a day.

School is literally a minute away door to door.

Said I could do all sorts in this assessment when she didn't even ask me to do these things.

Don't try bullshit us with your waffle.

We know. We live this.

Manumission · 25/10/2016 22:48

Sorry dawn. I skipped through and missed your links Blush

Dawndonnaagain · 25/10/2016 22:51

Manumission, no worries, I suspect in this particular case, the more we submit, the greater chance we have of being, erm, ignored! Halloween Grin

Manumission · 25/10/2016 22:53

Probably 😄

BowieFan · 25/10/2016 23:19

Thank you for sharing Oswin completely agree with you. Assessors lie. I've seen it happen. Oldbutstillgotit thinks she's one of the nice ones - but she isn't. Her complete lack of empathy and understanding as displayed on this thread has shown that her training as DWPBot3000 has worked.

Large numbers of people have always claimed sickness/invalidity/incapacity/ESA on a temporary basis. They get sick or injured, they make a claim, they get better. IDS saying that large numbers decided to stop claiming rather than go through a work capability assessment was utter shite. Why would they? It's not how the system works. It has always been the case that claimants flow on and off off this kind of benefit, because the majority are able to return to work, and prefer to do so, having firsthand knowledge of how dire and limiting a life on benefits can be.

TY is a wank.

Cherryskypie · 25/10/2016 23:40

My relative was never sanctioned because he quite sneakily died before the consequences of him being declared fit to work kicked in. He was terminally ill though tbf.

DorcasthePuffin · 25/10/2016 23:52

He is a very unappealing man. Let's do the psychobabble: he knows he is completely outclassed by both his parents, and so is desperately rebelling by being a 'maverick'. But sadly, he's not bright enough to make us sit up, look at things in a fresh way, and laugh (as a good maverick should). He's just dully predictable, tedious and depressing.

PickAChew · 26/10/2016 00:00

He deserves scorn for the oxygen he consumes.

Dontpanicpyke · 26/10/2016 00:06

Who are his parents as can't be arsed to google

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 26/10/2016 00:06

I finished this thread, found it depressing, and then saw this one:

Maybe this poster should just spend a bit less on champagne, eh? Angry

PickAChew · 26/10/2016 00:16

That's a bloody long commute to use up a day's NMW, Iona.

SomethingOnce · 26/10/2016 01:30

Bell end.

enolagayits0815 · 26/10/2016 01:35

Toby Young is on my virtual dartboard along with Michael Gove and boris Johnson. I would call them dicks but that's disrespectful to all the fine, upstanding dicks out there that serve a useful purpose.

Hirosleaftunnel · 26/10/2016 02:27

We left the UK because DH and I were sick of contributing high rate tax and watching the people around us relax while we put the work in to pay for it. Ken Loach is as bad as Toby Young,he has no idea what is actually going on in 2016 Britain, sitting in his multi million pound town house and working in LA and the Riveria.

graphista · 26/10/2016 03:14

I am SICKENED by the heartless, compassionless views of a few who have posted. HAVE my spinal condition, HAVE my dysfunctional nerves, my multiple mh illnesses, gynae condition and gastro condition you're welcome to it ALL oh and while you're at it would you like all my meds? With the complimentary side effects? Would you like my daughter's disability instead? Or my aunts multiple life threatening (as in literally not knowing if she'll wake tomorrow morning?) Condition - for which she was told she was not too sick to work even though going across a room nearly kills her?!

I also have several people I know who work for DWP, they are hating it and every one of them dreading what will come next. And they are sick of the pressure to treat people this way.

I personally know of a suicide, several incidents of pneumonia (not enough money for/fear of large heating bills) and malnutrition (guess why?!) plus worsening of their existing conditions due to the stress caused by the repeated accusations of not being a genuine claimant, being vilified in the press and by govt and the likes of young! It's despicable and there is NO justification for it.

graphista · 26/10/2016 03:15

*conditions re aunts health before the pedantic heartless ones pick up on a typo.

Clandestino · 26/10/2016 03:49

Just read, its actually quite a fair article, the film he refers to is pretty bias. Nothing extreme in it.

Seriously? That wanker suggested that the film is a total fiction and victims of cuts don't exist because how come it didn't show the welfare spongers.
Well, I'm against the welfare sponging but I truly believe that there are fuckers who milk the system and give a bad name to majority of decent people who are in a very bad situation they didn't cause and need help.

SharkBastard · 26/10/2016 06:13

Hiro do YOU know what's actually going on in Britain given you moved cause you begrudge helping vulnerable people and children?

SonyaGluck · 26/10/2016 07:12

justicewoman Thank you for the link to the Paul Bernal blog. He articulates something I've been saying for a long time.

Hirosleaftunnel · 26/10/2016 07:27

shark I never claimed to know but I only recently left and my DSIS is a GP on the frontline so maybe I have a little idea. I spent 10 years in a Central Govt policy unit, so perhaps that may have me some insight into how things were going. And after 20 plus years paying higher rate tax, I think we did our bit thanks. No objection at all to helping those who are in need, it's the indigenous work shy that we objected to supporting. Both from solid working class backgrounds too, both comp educated just your average punters really. Voted with our feet so our DC can grow up valuing hard work and education, not spouting about being victims of the evil government.

badabing36 · 26/10/2016 07:37

Bowie , I'm sorry but I think we have slipped into the realm of the Swiss Proposal (= give everyone the minimum wage without having to work and no questions asked, it's cheaper).

I actually think this is quite interesting. I say this as someone who has a pat-time mw job.

I wonder how much money the government spend processing sanctions, appeals etc. My partner works for the NHS and regularly wonders at the amount of hours of his paid time that are wasted trying to save pennies.

So many people choose to work when they earn little or no more than people on benefits already as the benefits (sorry can't think of another word) of employment are much more than a paycheque. Work is good for your physical and mental health. Which is why those who are physically unable to work find it so devastating.

If you put trust in people and expect them to do the right thing, you get results. If you treat everyone like a criminal sponger, then don't be surprised if (some) people act that way.

It's about trust, I went to Düsseldorf a few years ago. You didn't have to pay for the tube there, there was an optional payment like in art galleries or museums. Every single person I saw in rush hour paid.

A bit of an out there comparison but you take my point.

Obviously I know I'm living in cloud cuckoo land as no government would be elected in this country with this in there manifesto.

Hirosleaftunnel

Wow, people like you disgust me.

Both me and DP are higher rate tax payers and neither of us will be running away because we've felt we've paid too much. "Workshy"? Oh get over yourself. You know for a fact that "workshy" people make up a tiny tiny percentage of benefits claimants.

It's a shame that your kids are growing up thinking hard work will get you everything. It won't. I think it's disgusting to suggest those in receipt of benefits aren't hardworking. Perhaps you should bring up your children knowing that the government doesn't give a shit about you unless you're a billionaire. But hey, you keep feeding them a pipe dream instead.
