To think subscription boxes are scraping the barrel

Are there are people sitting in their houses wearing onsies while all their needs and whims arrive via monthly subscription boxes?

i do birchbox, getting bored after 6 months though,

I also like the Treatbox, lots of lovely lttle bits and pieces in.

I tried geekbox but felt it was too expensive, i did a special deal on lootcrate, but again, just so costly.

What a useful thread. Ta OP. I am working out the details of setting up a subscription service myself so this is really interesting.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 20/10/2016 09:08

Thinking about a geek and gaming type one for DS

ZoeTurtle · 20/10/2016 09:17

Thanks to this thread I went hunting for a subscription box for me and have signed up to www.blurtitout.org/buddybox/

It's provided by an organisation that helps people with depression, but sounds like it'll work as a pick-me-up for anyone. I have suffered with depression in the past and have ongoing anxiety.

I'm really looking forward to my first box. I'll report back if this thread is still going. Grin

Blatherskite · 20/10/2016 11:54

What I really want is a little craft subscription box with a new craft to try every month. Can't find one though...

Considering a Buddy Box. My depression is quite bad at the moment and that might help.

WankersHacksandThieves · 20/10/2016 12:23

Does anyone have any ideas of a box that would be good for the elderly? My Dm is in her 80s, doesn't leave the house very much, she likes to read but her eyesight isn't so great so she's more or less give up knitting and crocheting. Feel she is probably spending too much time watching shite on tv. I bought her some colouring books but don't think she has looked at them.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a box with a peoples friend, nice hand cream, nice teabags, some peppermints and maybe some dort of activity that can be done with not too much skill :)

BertieBotts · 20/10/2016 13:06

Delores the Loot Crate covers that one. DH got it for a while and it had nice stuff but it was an extraneous expense and it got cut at some point when we needed the money for something else.

I love the idea of these boxes, but every time I look at one, it's always more of the item than I'd buy in a month anyway! Blush

Socks are DS's "nemesis" apparently. If the loot crate socks one had children's sizes and wasn't $17.99 a month for two pairs Shock I'd get that for him, he'd do well with an ever-regenerating supply of socks.

The loot crate t-shirt only one is good value; if you'd normally buy a t-shirt once a month anyway. We wouldn't.

gaggiagirl · 20/10/2016 15:08

awkward the coffee is easily posted through a normal sized postbox yes.

Acrasia · 20/10/2016 15:52

I used to subscribe to a Tea Box and loved it, but cancelled because I had a cupboard full of tea, so thought I'd drink up what I had.

I never got round to resubscribing but after reading this thread earlier I thought perhaps I would. That was it, I just thought about it. Now, it was 3 years ago that I cancelled the subscription and have no contact from the company at all in the meantime, until I just checked my emails and there is one from them offering me 15% discount if I resubscribe! I am a little freaked out at their timing... but I am wondering is this a sign that I should definitely sign up to their service again? 😂

RichardBucket · 20/10/2016 17:46

Acrasia It is DEFINITELY fate. You'd better do it because tempting fate is very bad. -nod-

RichardBucket · 20/10/2016 18:08

*ignoring fate, I meant.

/blames sleep deprivation

ninnypoo · 20/10/2016 18:19

I asked for a glossybox subscription for my birthday and I love it. Probably wouldn't pay for it myself but it's like getting a birthday present every month and saves my urge to buy more beauty stuff I don't need!

steff13 · 20/10/2016 18:30

Steff13 how much is the mysteriouspackage subscription and how long does it last?

The plan I am on is $25 a quarter. It just renews every quarter, and you can cancel any time. You never know when the packages are shipped. There are other plans, that are "bigger" mysteries. The most expensive one, I think, is $180, and it's a one time payment, and the shipments come throughout the year. It doesn't renew every quarter. The bigger packages are like one huge mystery, where you get clues in various boxes throughout the year.

The last package we got had an absinthe spoon, some newspaper clippings, a wedding invitation to a wedding at midnight with a bunch of pagan symbols on it, a old-timey pamphlet on how to survive a nuclear attack, and some other stuff.

ijustwannadance · 20/10/2016 18:38

Sounds really fun.

Acrasia · 20/10/2016 18:48

I certainly don't want to ignore fate RichardBucket! Who knows what sort of butterfly effect that could cause!! Right of to order me some Tea ☕️

Acrasia · 20/10/2016 18:49

*off grrr

SynchronisedCatsBumming · 20/10/2016 18:49

For quite a while I had a planner subscription kit, with fliofax type inserts, functional stickers, pens, etc as well as decorating items. I've now swapped to an art box - Scrawlrbox to satisfy my inner aspiring artist, and must say so far the items have been very good quality and encouraged me out of my comfort zone artistically speaking.

I'm a grown woman in my 30's but these subcriptions have rally brought me so much enjoyment. And much cheaper than letting me loose in an art shop!

notatschool · 20/10/2016 21:41

I wish this one was available in the UK, sounds great.

This thread is brilliant. Gin advent calendar I've got to have one. Can anyone recommend a box for 11 & 14 boys?

QueenofLouisiana · 20/10/2016 23:02

DS gets my geek box. He really likes it and is waiting impatiently for the next one. He likes the t-shirts and the bits and bobs stop him spending money on crap.

ItsJustNotRight · 20/10/2016 23:20

The cheese society is not to be missed if you're a cheese fan.

ItsJustNotRight · 20/10/2016 23:26

Ok read the full thread now & wished up on loot & geek crates.

shadowfax07 · 20/10/2016 23:30

Another vote for The Spicery subscription boxes, if you like curries.

MyPeriodFeatures · 21/10/2016 12:09

If there are any subscription box companies reading this I think you need to send me boxes as a thank you for generating new subscriptions for you.

I take it all back. Subscription boxes are great...,

Only if you find the one that suits you Myperiod and ruthlessly dump the ones that bore you, seem bad value for money.
