Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Zippyette · 17/10/2016 21:43

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

Metal - I can't even have it in the house! I would be more likely to let a small child watch Scream! Hahaha (Joking obvs!)

Livnatmum · 17/10/2016 23:42

OhDearDucks me too!

I remember seeing part of an episode of Bergerac as a kid and 2 dogs had been poisoned and were lying down "dead" on the floor. Of course they were acting dogs, playing dead, but I didn't know that and had nightmares about it. That image actually still stays with me. shudders

first world problem. yabu

girlwithamoonandstaronherhead · 17/10/2016 23:46

I get where you are coming from op. Would you want ur toddler to.see a dead body in real life? Then why let them watch it on a TV? We have similar problems at my parents and tend to handle it in a 'come on let's go and see where the cats gone' sort of a way (aimed at ds not my parents) and they seem to get the hint a lot of the time.

Jesus - Bergerac Grin

MrsC2810 · 17/10/2016 23:52

Bergerac is pretty tame compared to some stuff, it's not sons of anarchy!
I can see why you wouldn't want her to see it, but tbh she probably isn't taking any notice and if she is, she probably thinks they are asleep.

woodenmouse · 17/10/2016 23:52

Don't ever come to my house! I love a bit of csi etc. Ice never watched it around dc but ds1 has crept downstairs while head watching it in the evening a few times. Dh let's ds1 (3) watch Dr who, the avengers, iron man and several martial arts films. He loves it, I was worried he might get nightmares but he's never been bothered by it.

I took dc to a funeral the other week too. Shock horror they were near an actual dead body. Although they didn't see it.

Dontpanicpyke · 17/10/2016 23:52

My parents watched bloody awful things in the 70s when I was a kid like 'horror' 'bouquet of barbed wire' 'tales of the unexpected' the music to they still shivers me Grin

But Bergerac? Don't think that was as bad as midsomer murders?

Love old John Nettles. Grin

Personally I think the soaps are horrible and on before the watershed. Kind of with you op I liked my kids to watch nice stuff but you can't control another persons TV so stop visiting and invite them to you.

Meeep · 18/10/2016 00:00

I must be another sensitive flower.

If your child is entranced by the TV and can't be distracted - sometimes kids are like that - I don't think it's too precious to ask for the shows on to be age appropriate.

(Saying that, I've never seen Bergerac so I don't know if this is a joke and it's something super super tame?)

GingerDoesntHelp · 18/10/2016 00:10

Bergerac? Grin

leopardgecko · 18/10/2016 00:11

YABU but thanks for the laugh....Bergerac? LOL LOL

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 00:15

Bergerac was jerseys answer to Bodie and Doyle and guessing you don't know them either?

Hides head in wrinkles. Google it Grin

slinkysaluki · 18/10/2016 03:38

OMG Confused

RubbishMantra · 18/10/2016 03:57

Eh? Bergerac? A programme re-run between 12 - 4pm? In-laws didn't make DCs watch Zombie Apocalypse or similar?

Methinks OP might be having a bubble at our expense.

As an aside, I think it's good for children to understand death is part of life. None of this "oh, fairies took him away," nonsense.

Op may well have been serious????
Is that why she didn't come back?
Imagine, she actually wanted her husband to phone and reach an agreement before they would agree to go back.
Shit, some DILs are just bat shit...

RubbishMantra · 18/10/2016 04:24

"Mind you, the fight scenes in it are oh-so-realistic"

^^ like the villain taking a swipe at the protagonist, but you can see protagonist leaping out the way before villain's decided what to do.

woo why is it So ignorant!? Rude, possibly (though we always have some background noise in our house, same with the rest of my family), but ignorant?

paxillin · 18/10/2016 08:45

Yes, phoning ahead to protect precious from Bergerac is batshit.
Changing it to cbeebies in somebody else's house is rude.

Even if having the tv on in the first place when you have guests is rude.

BowieFan · 18/10/2016 09:14

WhatsUpp

Yes it can be that hard. It's not OP's house. She has no right to boss around other people or police what they're watching. If she doesn't like what they're watching, she can leave. I certainly wouldn't have someone walking into my house and telling me what to watch.

BowieFan · 18/10/2016 09:16

I used to watch The Professionals when I was not too much older than that. I still have a thing for Bodie.

Ausernotanumber · 18/10/2016 09:17

Bodie all the way.

Bergerac 😂
