Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Zippyette · 17/10/2016 21:43

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

I always thought Bergerac's blouson jackets were quite offensive. Shock

DesolateWaist · 17/10/2016 22:30

In fairness I always found Nettles a bit creepy.

GaryGilmoresEyes · 17/10/2016 22:31

Could have worse. It could have been CHIPS with Erik Estrada and his incredibly tight trousers.
Bergerac swoons

MadHattersWineParty · 17/10/2016 22:32

Stop. It's too funny GrinGrin

Liiinoo · 17/10/2016 22:32

In our culture children the same age as your DD will attend wake houses with real dead bodies lying in open caskets in the front room, often people they will have known and loved when they were alive. They all seem to grow up unscathed. I doubt your DD will be harmed by catching a glimpse of someone playing dead on a TV screen.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/10/2016 22:36

Bergerac did think he was a bit of alright leaning against his Triumph didn't he? Grin

I remember visiting somewhere in Jersey and my mum being terribly impressed that the hotel had Jim Bergerac's actual car on display outside.

justatoe1 · 17/10/2016 22:37

I still have vivid memories of being upset by Bergerac in my teens....my mother & grandmother lusting after John Nettles was very disturbing.

RandomDent · 17/10/2016 22:38

The theme tune is stuck in my head now. :o

Guavaf1sh · 17/10/2016 22:41

YABU. And hilarious

Marilynsbigsister · 17/10/2016 22:47

Oh bugger , it was a wind up wasn't it ? ..and I so desperately wanted OP to come back and earnestly point out how disturbing John Nettles is to the young impressionable mind... but she's never coming back is she Hmm. Well done anyway. Really made me laugh xx

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/10/2016 22:47

Bergerac is now appearing in Poldark.

Don't let your DD watch Poldark.
Not cos it's violent, just so she doesn't get disappointed when she grows up and discovers that most men don't look like Aiden Turner

WhatsUpp · 17/10/2016 22:48

YANBU op. A 3 year old won't know good acting from bad, and they'll think a pretend corpse is real, of course they will. I wouldn't let my dc watch Jeremy Kyle or eastenders for the same reason (not that I watch either, but tonne it's the same thing ).

Will a 3 year old survive seeing it? Yes of course.

Will everything that a 3 year old can survive be good for them? No of course not.

Age-appropriate viewing in my house all the way. I think they should avoid watching it until she's gone. Surely it can't be that hard?

Stopyourhavering · 17/10/2016 22:54

When my dd was 4 she was obsessed with the Film Amadeus and particularly the part when Mozart dies....Confused
She's 19 now and has turned out fine --although would rather listen to Drakeor Kanye instead of Classical Music nowSad

Butteredpars1ps · 17/10/2016 22:55

I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming)

Then take DC to their room and read to them.

ShteakandShpuds · 17/10/2016 22:55

YANBU OP. Bergerac is a shite program.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/10/2016 22:58

And once again....the OP lights the blue touch-paper and retires from the thread Hmm

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/10/2016 22:59

It's probably more damaging for a child to learn that the world revolves around them, and if they walk into a room at someone's house, CBeebies, will immediately switched on for them.

moomoo222 · 17/10/2016 23:01

YABU. & In answer to your WWYD - I would stop being so precious and taking myself too seriously OP. She really won't have been worried by some hammy 80's acting.

But Bergerac, seriously? Are they still showing re-runs of that under the bridge Wink!?

Lilacpink40 · 17/10/2016 23:03

"Don't let your DD watch Poldark.
Not cos it's violent, just so she doesn't get disappointed when she grows up and discovers that most men don't look like Aiden Turner"...I agree if only! Grin

SolomanDaisy · 17/10/2016 23:04

But turning the TV to cbeebies isn't the only option, is it? You can switch the TV off. Or have an adult programme that isn't unsuitable for kids of which there are many, e.g. sport, cookery, strictly etc. There's no reason to have adult drama on TV around young kids.

9troubledwaters · 17/10/2016 23:05

Is Bergerac back on? Cool what channel?

paxillin · 17/10/2016 23:07

YAB precious. Keep the fury for the big issues. CBBC at bedtime? You mean the blood and gore of horrible histories Grin Grin?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/10/2016 23:11

Well exactly, Paxillin Cbeebies don't shy away from the big life issues. Mossy the dog died on Topsy and Tim recently and I was quite traumatised. It was a really sad episode, even my niece looked shocked.

unimagmative13 · 17/10/2016 23:15

Oops I better stop watching Ex on the beach in front of the children

RoseGoldHippie · 17/10/2016 23:17

Nothing is creepier than the little people in In the Night Garden- urgh give me the totally creeps I have no idea why!
My parents were strict with age ratings but we always used to watch murder she wrote and midsummer! Family viewing right there!
