Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Zippyette · 17/10/2016 21:43

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

I think the OP is getting a bit of a hard time - I think it's fair enough that you don't want your 3 yr old sat in front of the TV. I think it's rude to sit watching TV when you have guests round. However, if that's what they do, wouldn't it make sense for you to move away from where the TV is, sit her with her back to it, and play with her? Or go out for a walk, or go and play in the kitchen, or the garden?
I think you were rude to turn the TV over in someone else's house, tbh so it sounds like you are both a bit OTT.

Years ago my DM, in all innocence, recorded Trainspotting for my then 10-year-old son - because he liked trains.

Grin

Could have led to all sorts of misunderstandings -

Reservoir Dogs - "Well, he likes animals...."

Last Tango in Paris - "he's learning French, isn't he?"

10 - "I thought it would be suitable - it's his age"

SortAllTheThings · 17/10/2016 23:19

I watched Dexter and Son's of Anarchy while I was on mat leave. My children are horribly well adjusted. I think Justin and the Teletubbies are way more freaky tbh

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/10/2016 23:19

Silence of The Lambs- "he's always loved sheep.

Nongoddess · 17/10/2016 23:20

kaitlinktm I particularly like the DM confusion over 'Trainspotting'. Sounds like a lovely film for a 10 year old...

Lol BBC has a show on iplayer called 'addicted to sheep', for some reason that worries me.

TheNaze73 · 17/10/2016 23:22

Charlie Hungerford's hats always scared me.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/10/2016 23:23

No programme scared me more as a child than "Chorton and the Wheelies", it was so sinister, I still remember the witch's face now

SortAllTheThings · 17/10/2016 23:23

My 2yo watches Horrible Histories. WAY worse :D

moggiek · 17/10/2016 23:24

I have a spare grip here, somewhere....

paxillin · 17/10/2016 23:24

Cbeebies? Dirtgirlworld is second to none in its horror. Really freaked me out.

PoohBearsHole · 17/10/2016 23:25

it could have been worse. it could have been Howard's Way, now that is distressing.

Thatwaslulu · 17/10/2016 23:27

Idlike not as much as it worries the sheep!

MetalMidget · 17/10/2016 23:28

OK, this is going to open me up to relentless piss taking, but here goes...

As a child, there was an episode of Bergerac that bloody terrified me. I can't remember how old I was, or the episode exactly, but I vaguely recall that it had a cloaked figure, possibly with a burnt face? Whatever it was, I had nightmares for weeks, and is a notable addition to my 'Shit that scared me as a child'. This also included:

-Zelda from Terrahawks

  • Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars
  • Safety videos - don't swim in open water, don't fly kites near substations, etc
-The theme tune to Lets Pretend
  • Pylons

Weirdly I was fine with stuff like Aliens, Predator, etc, which I started watching about 8 years old. I'd obviously been desensitised by Bergerac!

Confusednotcom · 17/10/2016 23:28

I get you OP but you're seriously overthinking it. Get your little one out the room on pretext of getting a drink for example if it's beyond what you deem acceptable. In a few years you'll get why you're getting a bit of a hard time - but I do get it!

Idliketobeabutterfly · 17/10/2016 23:30

It would be baaaaaaaaaaad for them

Confusednotcom · 17/10/2016 23:30

My DD had nightmares for years about a witch on the Sarah Jane adventures - thanks cbbc.

Ohdearducks · 17/10/2016 23:32

Great now I have the Bergerac theme tune playing in my head!

RoseGoldHippie · 17/10/2016 23:32

Ah no the safety videos were sooooo creepy!! Do any of you remember the don't play by the railway lines one?
One film that genuinely terrified me as a child was the Dark Crystal (I think it is a U btw) watched again as an adult and had the same effect! Could watch Saw etc all day long mind hahaha!

MetalMidget · 17/10/2016 23:34

Oh God, I forgot to add the Podcast draining scene and the Skeksis in general from The Dark Crystal...

charlestrenet · 17/10/2016 23:36

Metalmidget has a point - Bergerac is known in the trade as a 'gateway' programme - she'll start off with that and maybe a bit of Murder She Wrote and then before you know it she'll be onto Driller Killer and I Spit On Your Grave, all thanks to your Fil's addiction to scenes of graphic violence which may upset some viewers.

Ohmuther · 17/10/2016 23:36

YANBU.
I hate TV. I think it's dehumanising. But I realise I'm in a minority.
30 years ago I think you'd have got a v different response to your question. We've become desensitised. Drama Murder is everywhere. Sad

edwinbear · 17/10/2016 23:40

YABU do you not watch the news in front of your dc OP? I watch the 6pm news with dd (4) and ds (7) every day. There are sometimes upsetting stories, we use it as an opportunity to discuss current affairs, staying safe etc. These things are only as frightening for young children as you make them.
