This is so ridiculous, many of them look around 25.

We're still waiting for you on the other thread to show us which comments were extremely racist

it seems to be the only word you know

littleprincesssara · 17/10/2016 23:46

OK, to address to people wondering where the mothers and babies are - there are none, or very very few, at Calais.

I was there personally (admittedly last year, so a while ago) and there were certainly lots of women there are that time. And female products were being collected for donation.

Here is a photo a friend of mine took last winter.

Women make up approximately 4.4% of those residing in the camp, with an average age of 29.5 years;
lots maybe not

smilingmind · 18/10/2016 00:05

Yes amalfimamma but what I was saying is that if we refuse to admit people into the country unless they definitely look like a child then children of 14 and older may be refused entry.
When the age checks are done, after entry, those judged to be older will be allowed to apply for asylum if they have a good case. Those who do not get asylum will be deported.

It may stop them destroying their documents though.

Let's say A is a minor with no documents from Syria and b is undocumented because he destroyed his documents, says he is a minor and from Syria.
If there were a common policy to fully assessment the age of both 'boys' and not only refuse but send back to the country he claims to be from those who are adults and without documents, I hazard a guess at saying wed see a 50%fall in undocumented immigrants.

Inyournightdress · 18/10/2016 00:14

There is such a thing as an age assessment which is carried out on people claiming asylum under the age of 18 years. I am sure that has either happened already in the camps or will be happening. There are British social workers both in Calais and here who are carrying out best interest assessments on these children (I know this for a fact). I also know that there have been children as young as ten who've been welcomed here from Calais.

leopardgecko · 18/10/2016 00:15

I can't say too much. But as a foster carer we have been aware for a year or so of several migrant "children" being placed in our area whose age is very, very dubious.

Wriggler79 · 18/10/2016 00:18

They've just got dark hair and eyebrows, it makes them look older. They look babyfaced still.

littleprincesssara · 18/10/2016 00:19

There are 6500 people in the Jungle. 4.4% of 65,000 is nearly three hundred.

Tell you what, you tell me how many hundreds of oppressed and terrified, traumatized women and girls (denied basic necessities of life, homeless, stateless and at constant risk of rape and forced prostitution) do you consider the absolute bare minimum for giving a shit?

Yes, although often there is no proof, and as I said in a previous post, as a foster carerI have been involved with some young people who are placed with the local authority on the benefit of the doubt. It is actually a very difficult problem at times and most foster carers in my area are on "standby" for a young (or not so young) person who comes into care in this way.

It's scary how much morals and compassion frighten some people.

And the extreme venom and nastiness with which they attack anyone who shows compassion to their fellow humans.

Remarkable.

clam · 18/10/2016 00:24

Examples, please, from this thread? The only nastiness I recall was the "racist bigots" line earlier.

If you actually took the time to read instead of wading in calling all posters racist and insulting the intelligence of other posters you'd know that almost everyone on here has asked where are the females and children under 10?

Of the 14 who arrived today I wouldn't bet 10p that they are all under 18

The next time you want to partake in a thread, please rtft before commenting, and do know that bandying the r word about shows you up doesn't stifle debate

Lionking1981 · 18/10/2016 00:30

These 'children' look at least 25. There is one who looks younger in those pics. I want to laugh because this is so funny but to be honest, I feel frightened that they are going to be placed in our schools, possibly with my 15 year old daughter.

A survey conducted last week found there were between 1000-1200 unaccompanied minors.

almondpudding · 18/10/2016 00:32

So are we getting an answer to how many mothers and babies there are in the Jungle?

There are 2.5 million refugees in Turkey. Half of them are female. I read that a quarter of the women in the Turkish camps were pregnant, but don't know if that is correct.

Dreamfoil · 18/10/2016 00:35

YANBU. They are secondary kids in the same way that the cast of "Grease" were.

LouisTherouxsGlasses · 18/10/2016 00:38

YANBU it's a complete joke. The one in the red hoodie looked massive.
What about focusing on actual kids still stuck in Aleppo rather than Afghan men?

We ought to raise the age limit - those of who have/have had an 18yr old son - they are just kids.😞

38cody · 18/10/2016 00:47

And we need to dish out some contraceptive I injections to as many in the camp as are willing - although I suppose a baby born into such a mess is a ticket in, can't imagine why else they would be pregnant but do understand - they just want a better life.

Pluto30 · 18/10/2016 00:54

If they do not have documents, they should not be granted asylum.

MaryTheCanary · 18/10/2016 01:07

"I dare say our children might look a bit older if in a camp for any length of time"

Hmmm---my understanding is that war, malnutrition and poverty tend to slow down growth and puberty. When I have travelled in developing countries in the past with many poor people, I have sometimes been a bit startled by the "12yo" who turns out to be 15 or 16, but not really the other way round.

Given that this is a small number of boys/young men who do, to be fair, have relatives here already, I suppose there is a reasonable case for their being allowed to come over.

But I do think that people are entitled to feel annoyed at being manipulated by misleading media images.

If the argument is "Well, young men are still vulnerable and they do have relatives in the UK," then the argument should have been framed in those terms right from the start, so that we could have an honest discussion; as it was, the newspaper articles were full of pictures of tiny tots. Stuff like this feeds people's sense of mistrust in the media.

Inyournightdress · 18/10/2016 01:12

pluto30 it isn't as simply as that though. If you were fleeing for your life from a country would the first thing you think to grab be your papers or would it be food and warm clothing? What if all your papers were destroyed in a bomb? And some countries, such as Pakistan, are considered so 'lawless' that immigration officials in this country won't accept them because you can't trust documents from such a 'lawless' country in case they are fraudulent.

Sometimes logistics and form filling isn't easy when you are dealing with human lives.
