to want to divorce the Scots

palanca · 17/10/2016 10:00

Honestly, I have 3 BFs who are Scottish and I love the place but I am heartily sick of being threatened with another independence referendum - clearly this is just going to be repeated ad infinitum

It seems pretty clear that most Scots do not want to remain in the UK so I wish that they would just go rather than holding the sword of Damocles over the heads of everyone else in the UK. If there were a UK wide referendum on Scotland remaining in the UK, whilst ideally I'd love them to stay, I am afraid I would certainly vote for Spexit and let them get on with it rather than having to listen to the constant whinging ....

I think there should be another Scottish referendum following brexit.
That being said I don't know many Scottish people and so I have no idea how the land lies really, I just think it would be fair.
I really hope Scotland does remain part of the UK but really I think it is for them to decide.

palanca · 17/10/2016 10:43

I guess what I am posting about is my emotional feeling rather than the politics of this - what I feel is "got at" and effectively like a partner whose OH keeps threatening to leave them but does not quite have the balls to do it. I do think that exactly as happened in the Brexit debate, this debate will also have a direct impact on how people in the rest of the UK actually FEEL about the Scots and not in a good way ....

HA @ thats plenty Grin actually lold and forgotten what i was going to say

pictish · 17/10/2016 10:44

Hmm...maybe you should try to stop taking it so personally.

RabbitsNap01 · 17/10/2016 10:45

but equally it doesn't hold true that voting for Scottish independence now will result in Scotland staying in the EU. Scottish people could say they're voting for that, but Sturgeon has to get a deal from the EU to that effect which is by no means clear. And Scotland out of the UK and out of the EU, that's not a desirable outcome.

2kids2dogsnosense · 17/10/2016 10:45

I think if Scotland left the UK, both the Scots and the rest of the union would be poorer (in every sense) for it.

keeptheheid · 17/10/2016 10:46

Your analogy doesn't work OP, it's more like a partner who threatened to leave, was promised things would improve & now it has turned out that was a lie & they are considering leaving again.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 17/10/2016 10:52

Absolutely true Rabbits, and noone is arguing otherwise. But an independent Scotland is more likely to be in the EU than one that is so attached to England and Wales.

And Scotland differs hugely politically to England and is likely to suffer without the buffer that came with the EU. Of course other areas are also likely to suffer - Wales, Cornwall - they benefited from being within the EU, but they are getting what they voted for. Scotland, as is ever the case, didn't.

MrsJayy · 17/10/2016 10:52

Oh aye remembered what I was going to say you really should tell your Scottish friends what you think of their nationality and country clear the air and see how well it goes down
. Not all Scots want to leave the uk not every Scot is shouting about anything but carry on hating your neighbouring country tell your pals they would love to hear your thoughts.

Aderyn2016 · 17/10/2016 10:53

Bewty, was that because if Scotland left the union it wouldn't have automatic membership of the EU? Even if Scotland votes to leave the union now, is it not still the case that it would have to join the EU as a new member and negotiate terms?
I guess that promise was made on the understanding that Britain was the EU member, not any one of individual member states, but it was known that Britain's membership was up for debate.

Bluebolt · 17/10/2016 10:54

My "yes" relatives are now very EU which I can not get my head around as two years ago leaving the EU by voting yes was never a problem. But they do shout the loudest as they are very passionate and that passion is going nowhere anytime soon.

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 17/10/2016 10:56

Bollocks OP, you are looking for a fight. Hope you get what you want luv

Aderyn2016 · 17/10/2016 10:57

The Scots did get what they voted for. They voted for the union and got what the union voted for. That's what a union means - you get what most members ask for.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 17/10/2016 10:59

Aderyn, clearly I was referring to UK voting rather than Scotland only votes.

milkshakeandmonstermunch · 17/10/2016 11:00

Ok I'll bite.

It seems pretty clear that most Scots do not want to remain in the UK

Based on what? The last referendum where the majority voted to remain in the UK?

You sound silly. And goady.

Smartleatherbag · 17/10/2016 11:01

I'm Scottish and I don't blame you. I'm fucking embarrassed to be Scottish now. Whinging 45%ers and their ugly nationalism. I'm used to be proud of being Scottish and British. Sadly, I'm ashamed now. Nationalism is destroying us.

RabbitsNap01 · 17/10/2016 11:03

I'm not sure I do agree an independent Scotland is more likely to get EU membership, the RUK economy is more diverse and vibrant than the Scottish economy. I agree though, if Sturgeon can get the EU to commit to any kind of a deal (which I think unlikely) it would likely be enough to tip the vote into independence.

Smartleatherbag · 17/10/2016 11:03

Oh, and the concept of 'civic nationalism' is total bollocks. "Our nationalism is better than everyone else's nationalism'! Ha ha ha! That's plain old nationalism, loves.

MorrisZapp · 17/10/2016 11:06

Tedious innit. I'm a no voter and I never once 'listened to lies' from the 'mainstream media'. Nor did I imagine that a no vote was insulation against future Brexit, because I understand how elections and referendums work.

Brexit and 'broken promises' are neither here nor there for me. I didn't want independence then and I dont want it now.

RabbitsNap01 · 17/10/2016 11:06

agree smart, the SNP have their core of nationalist thugs just like any other nationalist party. And I loathe their co-opting of cultural nationalism into their political aims, I love Scotland and find it utterly alienating when I see yes voters wrapped up in the Saltire. I'm not less pro-Scotland because I don't think independence is a good idea.

Dowser · 17/10/2016 11:06

Well I know what I want.
As someone with strong Scottish and Irish roots ( Scottish grandfather on one side and Irish grandmother on the other)and a passion for things Welsh but living and born in England I want our beautiful country to stay united.

That's my two pennorth.

keeptheheid · 17/10/2016 11:06

Rabbits I think that's what's going to swing it this time, if the EU somehow agrees to Scotland staying then independence seems inevitable.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 17/10/2016 11:07

Goodness me divide and rule. IS/Daesh would laugh wouldn't they.

Why on earth are we acting as the EU countries are our enemies? Why is there a split between the English and the Scots? For goodness sake we have so much in common.

What is wrong with the UK at the moment? Do we need another terrorist attack to remind us exactly who our enemies actually are? I sincerely hope not but I really have to wonder what is going through peoples' heads.

RabbitsNap01 · 17/10/2016 11:08

i don't think they will though keep, i can't see what's in it for them to take on another small country that could likely be a drain on their strained purse. Spain are totally against it. We'll see...

Smartleatherbag · 17/10/2016 11:08

Yes, Rabbits, they sure do.
It's vile and the delusional thinking is infuriating.
We voted to stay in the UK. Move on.
