To think the Ched Evans verdict shows why mob justice is wrong

Hundreds of thousands of people were willing Condemn a innocent man. He was practically forced out of football. This is why we can't play jury from our sofas.

OP posts:
ZuleikaDobson · 14/10/2016 20:58

On his own admission, on hearing that his mate had a woman with him whom both of them had met only that evening, he turned his cab round, conned his way into the room, decided he wanted to "have a gone on her" and did so within a very short time after coming into the room despite the fact that she was clearly extremely drunk, whilst his mates tried to film them. He then sneaked out of the room leaving her very unwell. All of this happened whilst he supposedly had a settled relationship with his girlfriend.

I find him utterly despicable. On the basis of those facts, irrespective of the rape issue, I think it is absolutely right that he was forced out of football, because he has no morals and is an appalling role model. I hope football has the sense to keep him out.

phlebasconsidered · 14/10/2016 20:58

I truly don't get why his girlfriend is still there? Why ? Is she some sort of patriarchy puppet doll? So low in self esteem that she needs his justification? Tied to his family? Bribed? I do not want to detract from the truly shit ruling by asking this. I know it is his fault. I just keep returning to: why his girlfriend doesn't have a life , a conscience or an ounce of self respect. In her shoes, i would be asking so many questions of my "it's ok she was just unconscious" fiancee that I probably wouldn't fucking stand by him or bank roll him. Where is her mind?

luckylavender · 14/10/2016 20:58

Well we'll have to agree to disagree won't we. I'll keep an open mind & others can remain bigoted.

PikachuSayBoo · 14/10/2016 20:59

I will always consider him to be a rapist.

There is no way that it's right to have sex with a woman who was so drunk she pissed herself and was falling over and throwing up. And to say it is ok just because she's slept with other people before and therefore must be a bit of a slapped is so horrific I don't know where to start.

ZuleikaDobson · 14/10/2016 21:00

Am I right that in slander/libel cases a firm belief in the veracity of what you are saying is a defense? I think it is in the States, not sure about Canada (where I am) or the UK.

Sorry, it's definitely not a defence in the UK.

PikachuSayBoo · 14/10/2016 21:01

I think the gf is so fucked up and shallow that all she cares about is being a WAG. She thinks now he's been cleared he has a chance of being a top footballer. She maybe dreams he will play internationally, get into a premiership team and she can be the next Coleen Rooney. It's all about the lifestyle, cars, big house.

Hopefully he's too old and out of it now to have a chance.

ZuleikaDobson · 14/10/2016 21:02

Luckylavender, what is your view of those elements of Evans' conduct that night that he fully admits? Do you think it is bigoted to find that despicable?

GhostlySteamTrains · 14/10/2016 21:05

OP are you chad or his GF?

GhostlySteamTrains · 14/10/2016 21:06

Or one one of their "supporters"?

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 14/10/2016 21:14

Having sex with someone who is unable to give consent isn't 'unsavoury' it's rape.

That's not a bigoted opinion it's a fact.

Hedgehogparty · 14/10/2016 21:14

Op has gone very quiet....
Very disturbing case. As a previous poster pointed out, consent is now apparently transferable.

luckylavender · 14/10/2016 21:16

I think he acted very badly. But that doesn't make him a criminal. He's paid a high price for his stupidity. He should now be allowed to rebuild his life.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 14/10/2016 21:19

Acted badly? Hmm He raped someone, by his own admission he had sex without her consent.

I'm more concerned about the price his victim has paid, her life has been destroyed by this.

refusetobeasheep · 14/10/2016 21:20

I find the overwhelming condemnation by people who don't know those involved, were not in the jury room but nevertheless set themselves up as being so superior to the eleven members of the jury pretty unedifying. Ched Evans clearly has the morals of an alleycat and is not someone you'd want to spend any time with. But the extreme reactions of many on this site talks mainly to their own sense of self importance rather than any fundamental failing of our legal system.

Gogobojo · 14/10/2016 21:21

I'm with pikachu. I won't judge if it was rape but am incredulous that the court accepted evidence that was bought, from two parties that had opportunity to corroborate. Money talks. Sad

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 14/10/2016 21:28

It does not help that his supporters are such bigoted scum - I guess we have to trust in the justice system but there is nothing anyone can say that will soften my feelings towards him . I judge him by the company he keeps . And that girls life is fucked beyond comprehension . As is his too , a sorry sad mess

luckylavender · 14/10/2016 21:31

I suggest you stop thinking about him then. What's he to you? Do you know him? His supporters? The girl? I'm guessing not. Just let it go.

Soubriquet · 14/10/2016 21:32

Why would we let it go?
He has potentially ruined a woman's life because he felt he was entitled to have his way?

He has potentially ruined women's rights when it comes to rape in general

He will potentially cause many women NOT to report their rapes because things like this happen

But oh well never mind. Least the poor sausage can go back and play football Hmm

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 14/10/2016 21:37

It's something we all have to think about. The wider implication that consenting to sex with one person meaning consent to sex with anyone, and witnesses being allowed to accept bribes could potentially effect any one of us.

Hedgehogparty · 14/10/2016 21:37

It's hard to let go when the impression is given that it took a large cash inducement to produce two further witnesses.
Also, I've just seen that despite receiving a direct message from the fiancee mentioning the cash "reward" and signed off with a x, the hotel receptionist would not budge on his version of what happenedthat evening.

Sn0tnose · 14/10/2016 21:42

I suggest you stop thinking about him then. What's he to you? Do you know him? His supporters? The girl? I'm guessing not. Just let it go.

Jesus fucking Christ. I can't believe that this needs to be explained to anyone. If testimony can be accepted from two men who have received payment from the defence, if a rape victim's sexual history can be brought up and made a matter of public record, if a rape victim can be called a liar/slag etc because her attacker wasn't convicted, then that clearly sets a precedent for anyone else who is raped and has the strength to see it through to trial!

luckylavender · 14/10/2016 21:45

And I suggest you read all the facts of the case instead of picking on the ones that suit your anti men crusade.

Waltermittythesequel · 14/10/2016 21:46

He's a rapist.
He's a rapist.
He's a rapist.

He's a rapist.

He's a rapist.

BeyondPolkadots · 14/10/2016 21:47

Sorry Walter, I didn't catch that...?

Sn0tnose · 14/10/2016 21:47

According to Rape Crisis, 85 thousand woman and 11 thousand men are raped every year. Only 15% report these rapes to the police and there is only a 5.7% conviction rate.

Fucking horrific.
