To not want to suffer other people's cats in our own gardens??

They have peed on DP veggies, they have some acidic pee or something that killed strawberries? I do not touch anything that grows in our garden as I am pregnant. Bliming unfair.
One killed mt DD's bunny last year, bunny was about 12 weeks old. Can you imagine DD's heartbreak?? I well up just remembering.
There is one that has made his den in the front garden bushes, the grass around his den is gone and he is there all day.
Yesterday I stood on poo in my own garden.
I am seriously pissed off now!!!

Soubriquet - impressed re the swimming foxes! Grin

FredDibnahsCap · 14/10/2016 16:57

I've tried growing plants that they supposedly don't like, I've tried all the sprays, oils & granules I could get my hands on - none of which worked. I've tried putting citrus rinds down that doesn't work either. Tried putting coffee grounds down which didn't keep the cats away but did make all the plants & grass grow really well.
When my daughter was potty training I used to pour her wee around the garden (just ended up with a pissy smelling garden).
The only thing I've ever really had success with was when I was watching a friend's dog while they were away on holiday. Cats didn't come near.
I am praying that this water jet thing will work. I've seen a few videos on YouTube and they look like they are quite successful! Grin

Soubriquet · 14/10/2016 16:58

I was quite impressed myself Grin

I only remember it because it was a tv program I watched. They nearly wiped out an entire colony of rare birds where they were previously safe. The islanders went and got some maremmas to raise with the birds to ward off the foxes and they have repopulated very well

kali110 · 14/10/2016 16:58

super they are being purposely offensive.
Yep our escaped from our catproofed garden Grin

sophiestew · 14/10/2016 16:59

I am assuming ummi doesn't live in the Uk as they are in a country where people go fox hunting and cats aren't exempt from trespass laws.

People compare cats to foxes and badgers because

  1. legally the same rules apply to trespass.
  2. Many of the posters on this thread are assuming every bit of poo in their garden is from a cat, but some/all of it may be from unowned animals such as badgers or foxes.

HTH

NotYoda · 14/10/2016 17:02

The bird thing isa myth. Man from RSPB said so on R4 a couple of weeks ago. I think he'd be on the birds' side.

Agree it's vile when cats shit in your garden. I have found water pistol plus lion poo plus shouting to be effective

You could play Cat Thread Bingo on here

Poisoning etc - twats

Moreisnnogedag · 14/10/2016 17:11

My cat caught a rabbit and seemed to only eat it's head. He sat there outside the front door until we acknowledged it. I must admit I was really surprised he's managed to catch it.

But we live rurally, everyone has cats and probably have the poo is from foxes and badgers.

ElegantDream · 14/10/2016 17:23

I think all cat owners need cat fencing. (It's the overhang that stops them getting out). Yes, it's not pretty, but neither is my neighbour's garage or the back of sheds etc.

My cat goes out and has freedom, yet doesn't bother anyone else. If my garden wouldn't accommodate it, I wouldn't have a cat (in the same way I don't have a dog because I don't have the right environment etc.)

We keep all sorts of animals in ways different to their natural environment (wouldn't your dog be better off in a pack roaming forests?)

Securacat fencing, Protectapet, Purrfect fence to name a few. I'm trying to spread the word!

Ps no cats come into my garden, either!

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 14/10/2016 17:24

The collective shrug of cat owners as to having any responsibility for their pets impact on other people is quite staggering. Apparently me picking up turds in my garden or having to pay for deterrents is a price worth paying so someone a few doors down can have a fluffy pet. I found a cat in my living room over the summer, it was in the process of fucking up the side of my sofa while using it as a convienient scratching post, I guess that was my fault for having the audacity to leave a window open on a hot day, because after all, cats will be cats.

SoupDragon · 14/10/2016 17:26

I'm sure that non cat owners do stuff that piss off other people.

JacquesHammer · 14/10/2016 17:30

Well I don't cause damage to their property.....eat their food......etc etc

superfly I'm sure you appreciate how nonsensical it is that I can't have my windows open in case someone else's pet comes in. Nor indeed have my door open in case I need to carry something in.

I have a new strategy anyway. I no longer bother checking for next door's cat when I go out/away.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 14/10/2016 17:31

Quality bit of whataboutery there Soup.

kali110 · 14/10/2016 17:37

You wouldn't checking if you were going away Confused god there are some right horrible people on here.

kali110 · 14/10/2016 17:37

ElegantDream you know not everybody owns their own home....

AtMyHouse · 14/10/2016 17:39

Is this a joke? Of would you happily let someone's pet and a living creature starve to death if you go on holiday? Not to mention the mess it would make during the time you are away if not long enough for it to come to any real harm.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 14/10/2016 17:41

Kali, do you actually expect people to check their homes before they go away for any length of time?

kali110 · 14/10/2016 17:43

AtMyHouse seems so Shock
We have neighbours cats coming into our house and even staying overnight.
If we were going away i would make sure they weren't in the house.
Thought of the poor things suffering and their owners.
Really vile people.

ElegantDream · 14/10/2016 17:43

Kali110

Then you either need to:

Speak to the landlord - you mite surprised how accommodating they are,

Or, have an alternative - you can get outdoor structures that could house a cat and be temporary

Or, not have a cat because you can't provide the correct environment,

I would have a horse, but don't have fields and can't afford livery... So I don't have one

JacquesHammer · 14/10/2016 17:44

Well I have spoken at length to the neighbours about it. They refuse to give me any sort of recompense to cover the damage THEIR cat has done to the property.

SO I told them that was my strategy. Funnily enough they have suddenly discovered they CAN control their pet. Isn't it amazing what an empty threat can do Grin

kali110 · 14/10/2016 17:44

pan clearly the way me and another have read it is if they were going away=holiday/trip not up the shops.

kali110 · 14/10/2016 17:45

I'd still never take it out on an animal.
Funny how people go on about not taking it out on someone's child when a parent does or doesn't do something.
Ofcourse though, the animals don't matter.
Not like they suffer Hmm

SuperFlyHigh · 14/10/2016 17:45

jacques I said before your windows must be open wide enough for cats to get in, they can push Windows but they're not (apart from my nana's old Persian) able to open windows, he could even the catch. Cats As per the advert don't have thumbs!

kali110 · 14/10/2016 17:47

super my friends cat does!

JacquesHammer · 14/10/2016 17:48

Kali110 - I made it as a threat to the neighbours who refused to do anything about the issue. Suddenly they do. Sad that I had to make such a threat but......if they'd been actually responsible as a pet owner it wouldn't have come to it.

Super so I can either open the window a slight chink to no use whatsoever/I can have them wide open but your pet might come in. And that's reasonable? You really think thats ok just so neighbours can have a pet?

JacquesHammer · 14/10/2016 17:50

Super - interestingly the last time it got in, it sneaked in whilst I was struggling to carry an IKEA dressing table in myself.

Damn me and my needing to buy furniture. I clearly shouldn't have used my front door either Wink
