To make dd sell her some of her processions to pay for her phone bill?

So got dd a phone contract with 4gb data. When she hits her limit it cuts of all other services so I haven't capped her spending.
She keeps going over her data and has spent an extra £50 this month bringing her bill to £60.
So we were having a clear out and we find her old Nintendo 3ds which she never plays on. Managed to sell it on eBay for £70 but told her she has to give me £50 towards the bill . Aibu?

Why does she need a contract? Just get a data, call and text monthly pay as you go bundle and top it up once a month.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/10/2016 22:41

I'm that case I'd maybe explain to her that patience is a virtue and to learn to deal with slow WiFi. Perhaps gather her around a camp fire and tell her horror stories of dial up....

IAmNotAMindReader · 13/10/2016 22:41

Appologies for errant full stops. Hate typing posts via phone.

blurredlines · 13/10/2016 22:42

Contract seemed cheaper at the time. We did have giff gaff to begin with .

If you do a monthly pay as you go bundle you just have to remember to top it up the day before it runs out. Takes a minute or two tops.

mum11970 · 13/10/2016 22:44

Ds is the same age and knows not to use you tube when out as it just swallows up data.

80sMum · 13/10/2016 22:46

Can't you get her a contract that doesn't include data? Just get phone and texts.

SabineUndine · 13/10/2016 22:47

Is she chasing Pokémons? I believe they use a lot of data.

KenAdams · 13/10/2016 22:48

They slow your speed down if you go over 6GB on Giff Gaff unlimited.

KenAdams · 13/10/2016 22:49

Get iPlayer and Amazon Instant Video (if you have Prime) and get her to download programmes when she's at home to watch on the bus. Saves loads of data.

nancy75 · 13/10/2016 22:51

tesco do a capped contract, if the data runs out you can't use the internet but you can still call and text as long as within your limits (something like 5000 texts a month so they never get used up)

The people saying why does she have data make me smile, I have an 11 year old dd - she contacts all her friends via whatsapp - they are all on it posting videos, voice messages and pictures. She doesn't have one friend that doesn't have whatsapp as the very minimum on their phone.

LuluJakey1 · 13/10/2016 22:55

How much do you get for a procession these days? Does it depend how many people take part?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/10/2016 22:55

Ken they do, but they don't turn it off.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 13/10/2016 22:56

I have kids of a similar age and they know they can't use mobile data. It's turned off. Use it up and it's tough.
They've learned how much data You Tube uses and know they can't watch it from their phones unless they are on wifi.
You need to be very clear with her about this. She's old enough to understand.
YABU to sell her stiff to pay for the bill - it's important she learns how to manage bills like this.

ThirdTimeLuck · 13/10/2016 23:08

If it's an iPhone 6 she has make sure the Wifi assist option is turned off, it appeared and was switched on automatically with the latest update which means if uses data automatically when wifi is slow.

EE contracts disable browsing when data runs out but leaves other services, I get a text at 80% and then when it's gone and there is an option in the text to purchase more. I think a £60 bill for an 11 year old is extortionate, it won't do her any favours for when she has to start paying her own bills.

JellyBelli · 13/10/2016 23:11

Its not working. You cant ask her to monitor or manage her internet use. she's too young and doesnt get it.
Take the gadget away. Give her a basic phone that you can mage, and internet access on a pc.

Lynnm63 · 13/10/2016 23:14

My ds has 6gb and gets alerts when he hits 50%, 75%, 90% and 100% if your dd doesn't ask the provider why.

NoCapes · 13/10/2016 23:20

Lulu beat me to it Grin

WiddlinDiddlin · 13/10/2016 23:29

Are you sure she (and actually, you!) are fully aware of how much data various stuff uses and HOW to avoid using too much?

If you and she actually arent sure and don't know how to stop her phone using up her allowance then I don't think you are being reasonable really.

roasted · 13/10/2016 23:35

I think YABU to put her in the position where she can rack up such big phone bills. The suggestion to move back to giffgaff makes sense, if you have a giffgaff number too, she'll always be able to call you in an emergency for free even if she's wiped out all of her data, minutes and texts.

tristerflexu · 13/10/2016 23:35

You need get her on a capped co tract. My 14 year old has 500mb and is glue to his gone but he knows to put on wifi whenever he can.

PickAChew · 13/10/2016 23:36

Three PAYG is a penny a meg, plus 150MB free. Many buses have WiFi - she needs to save Youtube and downloads for when she is on WiFi.

12yo uses hthe web and pays Pokemon go an has maybe used 10GB of data since the end of July.

you're a bit naive to think that having her on a contract is the solution. Having her on an option where she can't run up a ridiculous bill is what is needed. If she's on PAYG, you can say that when it's gone, it's gone. A tenner top up on three will get her 10.5GB or thereabouts - no need to even convert it to a bundle. If it doesn't last the month, then tough shit.

GabsAlot · 13/10/2016 23:36

youttube is full of stuff 11 year olds shouldnt watch u should be worried about that more

but on the data front u can get capped contracts that dont cut off other services-dont fob it off till youve looked into it

carry on like this and you'll be paying big bill forever

PickAChew · 13/10/2016 23:37

sorry - not 10.5GB 1050MB! late night brain fart.

PickAChew · 13/10/2016 23:40

The errant zero also follows for DS1's data usage!
