Vegetable substitutes for carbs are crap

GinSoakedBarroomQueenInMemphis · 13/10/2016 16:41

Courgetti and carrotetti or whatever it's called instead of pasta = crap.

Sweet potato fries instead of chips = crap. (Not sure if sweet potatoes are a vegetable, but it's irrelevant. They're still crap.)

Mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potato = crap.

Cauliflower rice = crap.

Mashed celariac instead of mashed potato = double crap.

I'm most outraged with cauliflower. I love cauliflower when it's in its rightful place (on a roast dinner WITH ROAST POTATOES or in a curry), but mash it with sour cream and garlic, and it turns into devil vomit.

I'm not even being unreasonable. Potatoes and pasta and rice are lovely. Carb wish-you-were vegetables are just a huge massive vomity and expensive disappointment.

“The best way to cut carbs from your diet is to make creative substitutions,” says Irritating Chirpy Clear-Skinned Slim Nutritionist.
Oh, bog off.

I don't believe all this low carb stuff, I eat load of carbs and its never made me fat

me too - nothing wrong with carbs. We've been eating low fat, high fibre food this year - loads of veg. Lots of brown pasta and rice.

I've lost 20lb and DH 2 stone. And we weren't fat to start with.

maggiethemagpie · 13/10/2016 17:13

There's a lot wrong with carbs if you can't handle them, Sweetchickadee. And lots of people (especially me) can't.

Bloodybridget · 13/10/2016 17:15

YANBU. All this carbs-are-evil gives me the pip!

Butteredpars1ps · 13/10/2016 17:15

I don't mind sweet potato chips with plenty of paprika, and I like raw cauliflower grated onto salad.

The rest of it is yuk. Mainly because you end up with overlooked mush. Most veg tastes better if it's not over cooked and I'm greedy I prefer decent sized chunks with flavour and bite.

Shiningexample · 13/10/2016 17:17

a tad facetious of me, I know it works for some people
I like bread and potatoes with everythingBlush

Shiningexample · 13/10/2016 17:18

then again crisps made from vegetables I think are very tasty, esp the beetroot:o

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 13/10/2016 17:23

Substitute anything is shite.

Just leave the carbs off the plate if you are going low carb. Leave everything else the same.

Steak and chips -> no chips, have more of the steak or the veg to fill the plate.
Scrambled egg on toast -> scrambled egg in a bowl.
Pasta and meatballs -> meatballs in a bowl.
Chicken sandwich -> chicken and salad.
Chocolate cake -> cry into your slimline gin?

OhMrsQ · 13/10/2016 17:26

I'm sorry, I really am, and maybe I've lived in California too long..

I made a cauliflower pizza last week, in place of the actual dough. It was a real ballache to make, came out tiny, but was actually.. tasty.. !

Sorry to let the side down.

I do, however, miss big fat british chip shop chips more than you'd know

Hobbes8 · 13/10/2016 17:26

I try and eat less carbs and sometimes replace carbs with vegetables. However I've stopped trying to disguise the vegetables as carbs. Courgette mixed up with bacon, mushrooms and pesto is yummy. No need to pretend it's pasta. Curry without rice and with extra veg is fine (rice is boring anyway). Cauliflower rice is annoying and the bits go all over the place.

Coffeechocolatecake · 13/10/2016 17:32

I couldn't agre more OP

I am a massive fan of carbs. Me and DD tried the lastest low carb trend, but neither of us lasted long than a few days it made me espically feel ill the lack of carbs.

Don't have courgette spaghetti, your not fooling yourself. It's not pasta and you will be disappointed

Liiinoo · 13/10/2016 17:36

I am not keen on carbs unless they are cooked in unhealthy ways. If they aren't served with lots of butter or olive oil or ghee or goose fat or some other deliciousness I can't be bothered with them. They are too bland. Since my arteries cannot be subjected to this too often I often bulk out my plate with extra veg. I don't get this current trend to mince or shred them though. What's wrong with just slicing them or chunking them and serving in the normal way?

horizontilting · 13/10/2016 17:38

Courgette cake with lemon drizzle is a nice alternative to carrot cake. Cauliflower cheese is a nice side dish instead of mashed potato. That's as far as I'll go.

Although I see sweet potato "toasts" are a trend on Instagram where they look pretty and people put Nutella on them Confused

Lweji · 13/10/2016 17:40

The only good carb alternative for me is protein. :)
I can easily do with smaller amounts of starchy foods. Except fries.

Yep. Agree. I'd miles rather do this than pretend cauliflower is potato.

I love Sweet Potatp fries. I had no idea they were lower carb than ordinary potatoes.
I quite like courgetti, but not because it's low carb. I love carbs, and dont buy all the low carb stuff either. I personally think that too much protein is bad for you especially red meat.

tabulahrasa · 13/10/2016 17:52

Sweet potato fries are nice, but they're not low carb - they're just because I like them, I'd have chips with other stuff.

Cauliflower is evil in any way other than cauliflower cheese.

celeryisnotasuperfood · 13/10/2016 17:52

We follow the hay diet which means we don't eat carbs with protein and the best thing is just to have more veg - not try to 'fake' something.
That said we do eat a lot of frozen parsnips which are a bit of an alternative to potatoes or chips... (but not the aunt Bessie ones because they are full of grease)

Sallystyle · 13/10/2016 17:54

YASNBU!

Oysterbabe · 13/10/2016 17:55

I thought parsnips were carby?
Not everyone has a body that deals with carbs well. They don't fill me up, they make me hungry.

Shiningexample · 13/10/2016 17:57

We follow the hay diet which means we don't eat carbs with protein
how does that work when so many foods, eg legumes, grains, potatoes, milk products have protein and carbohydrate in them?

Sallystyle · 13/10/2016 17:59

I went on a low carb diet for a while.

I tried to convince myself that my low carb pizza base was as good as the real thing. It just wasn't.

I lost 5 stone with eating carbs but my IBS was a lot better when I was on a low carb diet. I love carbs too much though.

youngestisapsycho · 13/10/2016 17:59

Hi thought sweet pots were no carbs and that's why everyone is suddenly eating them? Anyhow, I like roasted butternut squash with my roast dinners instead of potatoes, but then I don't really like potatoes!

GinSoakedBarroomQueenInMemphis · 13/10/2016 17:59

I bloody love carbs, but they give me headaches and really bad nausea. Hence trying all the substitutes. ChocolateCakeWineBiscuit Sad

I think it has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that eating low carb or very low carb works wonders if you want to lose weight.

The trouble is keeping off the carbs forever! It is such a difficult thing to do, there can't be many people who can stick with it long term??

Apart from Jennifer Aniston. But most of us will have a moment of weakness when confronted by a roast potato at some point.

RueDeWakening · 13/10/2016 18:02

YADNBU!

I tried carrot & swede gnocchi yesterday. A) it was vile. B) it took 35 minutes to cook! Surely the main point of gnocchi is that it's virtually instant food?
