To think reduced supermarket goods are for customers not staff?

I was in an upmarket supermarket chain today and a member of staff, in full uniform, had a trolley load of reduced packs of avocados. They're normally relatively expensive but I thought I'd get some since they were reduced. So I went to take one out the trolley and she literally blocked my arm with her hand, saying it was her own shopping. Surely if she wants to do her own shopping she shouldn't be doing it in company uniform? The stock is there for customers not staff!

Maybe her shift was over?

So what was she supposed to do? Take a change of clothes with her every shift? You sound ridiculous.

All supermarket staff do shopping in uniform after their shift don't they? I often see it. It would be draconian (and self-defeating) for the supermarkets to prevent it.

A 'trolley load' of avocados sounds a lot, though. How many did she have? Did she have other shopping?

I can't really begrudge low- pay workers the inside track on when reductions are made. It's not much of a perk and probably much needed on those wages.

Surely an off-shift worker is a customer though?

There have to be some perks of the job, surely?

If her shift is over and she's doing her shopping she can buy what she wants. Why shouldn't staff be entitled to discounts? It's not like they're earning a fortune! If you want cheaper readily available avocados perhaps shop in a less 'upmarket' supermarket.

After your shift finishes, you are a customer. Regardless of what you are wearing. You are being unreasonable.

a trolley load ?? how many packs is that then ? besides if do you make a habit of taking stuff out of other peoples trolleys if they have a bargain ? besides how many avocados can one person eat ? the reduced stuff is there for customers and she is a customer if her shift is finished, although perhaps she should have covered her uniform with a coat or the like.

You shouldn't have taken from her trolley. If she has finished her shift then it's really not your concern.

I think the guy at my Tesco is VU, he works there, does the reductions out back, takes all the ones he wants andnoits them in the stock room, and then takes them to the shop floor for the customers. Then he finishes his shift a few hours later and pays for them.

What would have been wrong is if she has saved them somewhere. End of shift? It's avocado fair game and you lost.

If she came in to the store as a customer then she was just that, just as much as you were.

People who work in retail get enough crap already without grumpy customers keeping an eye on what they buy after their shift or when they are on their break. Mind your own.

Supermarket workers tend to be making minimum wage, why bar something that could be keeping them above water.

If it was her own shopping and she was purchasing them, then she was just as much a customer as you.
