To think reduced supermarket goods are for customers not staff?

I was in an upmarket supermarket chain today and a member of staff, in full uniform, had a trolley load of reduced packs of avocados. They're normally relatively expensive but I thought I'd get some since they were reduced. So I went to take one out the trolley and she literally blocked my arm with her hand, saying it was her own shopping. Surely if she wants to do her own shopping she shouldn't be doing it in company uniform? The stock is there for customers not staff!

If you refuse to be told you are unreasonable why are you posting and asking if you are?

Dare I ask what the relevance of the supermarket being upmarket is?

Soubriquet · 09/10/2016 17:21

Yabu yabu yabu what was that? Oh yes yabu!

welcometowonderland · 09/10/2016 17:21

"I refuse to be told I am being unreasonable. "

Grin Not sure this is the best place for you dear.
IzzyIsBusy · 09/10/2016 17:22

She's a customer too. Anyone who is in the store and paying for their purchases is a customer.
YABU and odd.

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 09/10/2016 17:22

VinoTime Grin

I think I'd have said something like "are you about to put these out on the shelf?" before actually reaching into a trolley tbh. They may have been out of date and she was taking them to be disposed of rather than put on display.

Surely most supermarkets don't move fruit & veg in order to put the reduced stickers on them? I've always seen the staff 'stickering' them on the shop floor rather than hefting them to and fro, risking bruising. Then again I go to the unwashed peasant supermarkets - I know my place.

DameXanaduBramble · 09/10/2016 17:23

Actually, the reduced stuff is just the quickest way to reduce the waste in that store, so really, it's for everyone. Staff, (they are customers too) customers, everyone. You do get that?

TallulahTheTiger · 09/10/2016 17:23

Avocado apparently means testicle in Aztec..

VinoTime · 09/10/2016 17:24

I refuse to be told I am being unreasonable!

Do you like cats and wear a lot of pink, OP? If you had you magic quill with you, you could have punished her!

'I must not buy all of the reduced avocados.'

And you're being totally unreasonable anyways. Avocados are fucking rank.

somekindofmother · 09/10/2016 17:25

yabu
ur cross that someone beat u to the reduced avocados and then blocked you from pinching them out her trolley!

PlumsGalore · 09/10/2016 17:26

DS used to work in a middle of the road supermarket petrol station, Was he entitled to buy the cheap reduced price sandwiches and out of date crisps and chocolate? Or should they have been left to go off until he changed out of his Tesco polo shirt? Shame, he bought them all anyway if they were worth having, we had Lindor chocolates and slightly soft prawn cocktail Walkers crisps for weeks.

IzzyIsBusy · 09/10/2016 17:27

Wind up or a reverse?

I am hoping wind up as nobody could be this snobbish Confused

velourvoyageur · 09/10/2016 17:28

You literally went to take one out of her trolley Grin love this

yerbutnobut · 09/10/2016 17:29

You refuse to be told you're being unreasonable, haha! How old are you?
Don't stick your head in the stocks then complain about having avocados 😉 thrown at you!!

mrsfuzzy · 09/10/2016 17:30

god, i fancy an avocado now, just going to pop to M&S, better put on the twin set and pearls Grin.
the really pressing question for me though is how many were making up a trolley full ? i really do need to know !

Friolero · 09/10/2016 17:31

You're being ridiculous, if she wants to buy a trolley load of reduced avocados (though god knows why she'd want that many) she can, whether she's an employee or not. Loads of staff must shop there, they're hardly going to finish their shift and then drive to a different supermarket to do their shopping.

I can understand why you'd make the initial mistake but should've accepted it once she'd explained it was her shopping.

WeAllHaveWings · 09/10/2016 17:32

what is a trolley full? are we talking 5, 10 or > 50 avocados?

when she finishes her shift she is a customer (with an additional staff discount too!). you shouldn't have had your hands in her trolley without asking if it was ok to take even if she was in uniform.

Enkopkaffetak · 09/10/2016 17:32

Lets for a moment assume that this was a worker on her shift that was reducing or putting out the said avocados. It is incredibility intimidating when people literally reach over you to get the item you have just reduced.

WAIT until it is put on the shelves and give others but you a chance to get them. We call shoppers like that " stalkers" It feels that way.

I suspect I work in said supermarket unless it is the other upmarket one SO I am with YANBU I can't see how you expect people to bring their own clothing to be able to go shopping after work. A LOT of people come into supermarkets in their work clothes Why shouldnt the supermarket shoppers be permitted to?

However you are not the first one who have had this opinion I have even had a customer demand I out back the shopping I had in my arms because she wanted it.

Charlesroi · 09/10/2016 17:33

I'm a peasant and I love avocados. In the interests of disclosure I should point out that I'm an educated peasant, so I don't expect some council house Johnny (employed or not) beating me to the draw.

Anyway, I had a pleasant bargain sharing experience today. A trolley load of blueberries were marked down to 10p and the posh lady who had first dibs offered me half. Which was nice.

Enkopkaffetak · 09/10/2016 17:34

chuckles forgot and with no spaces makes it highlight..

JaimeLannister · 09/10/2016 17:34

You seriously think supermarket staff should change out of their uniform before shopping? After I finish work at my not-upmarket supermarket I want to grab what I need and go home, not change clothes so you don't get confused about shopping amongst the lowly staff.

PatMullins · 09/10/2016 17:36

You are a one, OP Grin

SporkLife · 09/10/2016 17:37

How many avocados are we talking about here op? I'm really intrigued as to how many a trolley full is Grin

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 09/10/2016 17:38

OP you do realise that she would have got staff discount on them as well?

Mistletoekids · 09/10/2016 17:38

Yabu

WaitrosePigeon · 09/10/2016 17:39

Obviously YABU and cringey.

Fighting over avocados in Waitrose is so Mumsnet, I love it Grin
