Not to want my daughter's initials to be 'S.H.A.G'

I'm not a troll, I promise. I just signed up today as I need some help. My husband is completely settled on the name Sophie for our baby. Our 2 middle names, Harriet and Anya are our parents middle names which we have to use as it's family tradition. However in the order that we thought of, it would spell SHA and our surname begins with a GSad Would our daughter be teased or would it be ok?

Hilariously in the anecdotes of people with terrible initials, someone has mentioned me Grin. I do have terrible initials though so it's fair enough.

Change it ... I had the simple initials of SH and some wrote IT after them. Not funny.... why as parents would you want the initials to spell out this awful word. All they would have to do is write 'easy' in front and her life will be a misery and worst of all will create an undeserved reputation that can not be shaken off.

Family tradition is all well and good- but at the expense of the living tradition is not worth it.

Sophie means wisdom - get your husband to show some and change it to something which means the same such as Dara, Zofia, Athena, etc

At my school we had to have our initials embroidered on our games skirts. One girl's initials would have been SLAG, but her parents fortunately realised and made an adjustment to her name(s).

Ha no way! Someone who knows you IRL?

Roseformeplease · 09/10/2016 18:16

I worked with a PMS and DH is PMT. Both of them have had comments on it. PMS was a teacher and notes, notices etc had initials on, as did class books and correspondence.

Don't do it.

"Imagine if she married a Turner and wanted to change her surname"

That was my first thought! I know two ARSs, a W.C. and a B.J. I think I'd change it.

iMogster · 09/10/2016 18:26

It's so easy to just swap the 2 middle names over that this is a non issue.

LD33 · 09/10/2016 18:33

Swap them! When I got married my initials changed and spelt out something that's not even anything remarkable and its commented on a lot!! It's annoying so please don't do it!!!!!

LD33 · 09/10/2016 18:34

Lol not in Scotland !!! Grin

spamm · 09/10/2016 18:37

Of course you have to think of this.

We changed our DS's name from my preferred name, because of initials. He would have been SH-T. Funnily enough we felt that was too much of a burden for a little boy.

Why would you deliberately give fodder to bullies and teasing? Growing up is hard enough.

ImAMoving · 09/10/2016 19:04

Please change it, Charlotte is lovely too.
Do not have SHAG, of course everyone will motive forever and she'll get to 16 and change her name.
Do you want to use family names?

Leanin15yearsmaybe · 09/10/2016 19:10

I used to work in a prison and realised Ds's initials were going to be HMP. We added a name to prevent it. Swap them round!

Presumably not Umberto? Grin

ARCmummy · 09/10/2016 19:14

Put your foot down..... I had a shitty name like that. I had to change my surname at 17 cause of the torture

CaliforniaHorcrux · 09/10/2016 19:44

I know someone who picked a boys name for their DD (well, a boys spelling of a unisex name really) and has ended up with the initials of B.O..

Not good, agreed. But it hasn't done Barack Obama any harm

CaliforniaHorcrux · 09/10/2016 19:48

At secondary school I had a geography teacher Mrs Power who was AMP and my maths teacher was IRA, neither lived it down. Shame for Power she was ok but the maths guy was an arsehole so tough shite

Tapandgo · 09/10/2016 19:48

Of course people use initials of middle names - you have to on passports/ legal documents/ exam certificates etc - they are commonly used in memos at work.
Nobody would willingly give their child the initials SHAG - would they?

Lynnm63 · 09/10/2016 19:49

Girl at school was LBW, her dad was mad on cricket. She wasn't impressed.

ColdTeaAgain · 09/10/2016 19:53

Why in gods name would he want his daughters initials to be SHAG? He needs a good shake! I wouldn't even swap the initials round, it's still too close. Just think of something else!

TheVirginQueen · 09/10/2016 19:55

He's mad if he thinks that's ok Confused

I know somebody who SAW the problem with her son's name and said that she and her H discussed it but decided it wasn't a real issue. I thought wow, it would have been in my school.

Leanin15yearsmaybe · 09/10/2016 19:57

Czerny god no! .... we went for Ulysses

TheVirginQueen · 09/10/2016 19:58

As for the ''never did barack obama any harm'' comments, have a look at yourself in the mirror, look at your academic achievements, assess your husband, is your child going to be like Barack Obama!? I mean that kindly.

ChocolateBudgeCake · 09/10/2016 20:00

Change it! My initials are NOB and I've been ridiculed all my life.

VerbenaGirl · 09/10/2016 20:00

Don't do it!! It really will be a nightmare for her. Go for Sophie Anya Harriet - which is lovely.

Overshoulderbolderholder · 09/10/2016 20:01

Really need to ask? Hmm
