Not to want my daughter's initials to be 'S.H.A.G'

I'm not a troll, I promise. I just signed up today as I need some help. My husband is completely settled on the name Sophie for our baby. Our 2 middle names, Harriet and Anya are our parents middle names which we have to use as it's family tradition. However in the order that we thought of, it would spell SHA and our surname begins with a GSad Would our daughter be teased or would it be ok?

Glad you're changing it.
S H A G as initials is not on at all.

Honestly, some men are so fucking short-sighted sometimes unless its some chick with big tits 200 yards away, then suddenly the blinkers are off.

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 11:43

I have to initial 100s of pages a year. Not cool!

But you wouldnt surely put SHAG on everything.

You'd initial it SG. Not the problem some people are making out.

If parents saddle children with ridiculously long names, then they dont have to use all the initials.

paxillin · 08/10/2016 11:44

All of our timetables have lecturer initials. I'd hate to be Dr SHAG or Prof FUCK.

Tell him Sophie/Sophia has been in the top ten for more than a decade, being number 1 a few times. you're never the only Sophie at school or work, so initials will be used.

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 11:48

Yeah but people are missing the point in saying your initials will be seen on emboridered school bags, seen as lecturer and lawyer initials.

YOU DONT HAVE TO USE THEM ALL.

You dont have to embroider SHAG on to a gym bag. SG or SHG would suffice. Same for initials used professionally. You dont have to use them all.

Usually when you get something monogrammed, you dont have to include anything other than the the first and last initial.

Sophie is a crap name anyway. Really popular. The husbands insistence on that worried me more.

Notso · 08/10/2016 11:51

Dr SHAG Grin

You could just not follow the family tradition, it's not a law.

Excited101 · 08/10/2016 11:51

My DF is a TAG Lovely it's always been fine and he uses all 3 letters regularly. I actually really like it (but I know it's not mine)

I wouldn't even go for CHAG tbh op, I'd go for CAHG if you have to have those names. Or SAHG.

Notso · 08/10/2016 11:55

Doesn't everyone's signature include all initials?

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 12:00

Oh god, yes change them. I'm a solicitor and initials are used for everything; references on client letters, court documents, cashier forms, part of email address, minutes of meetings.

We use initials at our law firm too and lawyers are known by them so another no from me too.

Can someone tell me where all these law firms are that use all 4 initials of someones name? As someone said upthread, they only use irst and last initial. So if a lawyer, OPs child would be SG. If someone in the office was already SG, she would be SHG. I have never seen anyone use four initials on anything.

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 12:01

No. I sign mine E then my surname.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/10/2016 12:04

If the system is to use all initials, the individual doesn't get to change this until they become senior management.
At school, other kids will soon find out initials, regardless of what you choose on name tags - and again if the school requires all initials, you probably have no choice.

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 12:08

I've never worked at a law firm that does use all initials. Any idea how long that would make a client case reference number?

BigChocFrenzy · 08/10/2016 12:09

Most organisations with more than a few people probably have all initials as standard, to avoid duplication / confusion.
All my professional contacts, suppliers etc have EM addresses either with full name or with all initials

Freshprincess · 08/10/2016 12:10

Queenliz - I've worked in two companies were there was someone with the same first name and last name initials as me, so middle initials were used to distinguish between us in meeting notes. Not a law firm either. It's quite common

If all my initials spelt out SHAG then I would probably drop one of them.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/10/2016 12:10

Work emails and similar you often don't have much choice - have to provide full name and ID, and email address created before you join. Yes you can choose not to use them all BUT if the DH is so insistent that these are the initials then he's unlikely to agree to drop one. And I'd be he won't let his mum be dropped, if his mum is Anya then she'd be SAG instead, which still sucks!

roasted · 08/10/2016 12:14

Giving your daughter the initials SHAG or an anagram of SHAG (like SAHG) is just cruel. Don't do it. You're setting her up for a world of pain.

And if she gets married and decides to change her surname, it could get even worse. From SHAG to SHAT or SHAM, for instance.

My mum spent a lot of time making sure my initials didn't spell anything, couldn't be arranged into anything and gave me a choice of usable names (i.e. my middle name is a proper name rather than a family surname which you can't really use as a girl's name if you decide you hate the actual forename). Clever lady, my mum.

atticusclaw2 · 08/10/2016 12:15

Every law firm Ive ever worked at it has been the norm to dictate "Abcd telephoning London South employment tribunal and speaking with ...." Just asked DH and he said he's also never worked in one where that isn't standard practice (I've worked in six and he's worked in four).

Anyway the point is that it is standard in many places even if not all

madgingermunchkin · 08/10/2016 12:19

I was a school with one lad who was called S.T.D and another who was B.J - he insisted on having his middle initial of W in everything

You need to show your DH this thread. He needs a serious rethink. (And you need to stop being quite so bloody passive. She's your daughter too!!)

bluesbaby · 08/10/2016 12:21

I was once tasked with checking if a prankster had made an order, because a BJ had signed off - unfortunately she worked in the Oral Dept.

People definitely notice initials...

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 12:25

Yes me too. But I've been in 5 law firms and none of them used every single one of a persons initials.

If you have someone called Joe Bloggs:

In most of them he would have been JB. If there already was a JB he would be JPB adding a middle initial.

In another law firm it was first initial and and first 2 letters of surname so Joe Bloggs would be JBL. So it is dictating JBL telephoning xyz on the note.

I have honestly never seen somewhere that uses every single one of a persons initials.

Callaird · 08/10/2016 12:29

I looked after a little girl who had initials that spelled a word, she's almost 23, works in law and is still called by this word, thankfully is has been made affectionate by adding 'ie' and is quite sweet and I can't imagine calling her by her actual name!

However, Shagie is not cute! Please reverse the middle names.

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 08/10/2016 12:30

A friend of mine was planning to use a double-barrel surname after getting married until she realised her initials would be CLIT Grin

nagsandovalballs · 08/10/2016 12:32

My dp is Benjamin james (jones - not his real name). He is known by his mates when he has done something daft as blow job jones. As he is an Aussie, they also used to sing 'home and away, beno is gay'. These were lads who liked and respected him and it was done in affection... Imagine if my dp hadn't been a cool, sporty Aussie when he turned up from Sydney at British senior school?

Remind your dh this is not just a girl thing!

Bananabread123 · 08/10/2016 12:41

This is a case when tradition needs to be challenged... The potential downside of this tradition seem to far outweigh any benefits! If he's so set that he won't even change the order of these middle names then I'm guessing you have other issues with him too!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/10/2016 12:42

Nobody ever notices initials that includes middle names

Every office I've worked in uses initials. I did think the person who was OMG was mildly unfortunate but SHAG is a disaster. Tbh I'm not sure SAHG is much better. It's got the potential like FCUK to be misread.

QueenLizIII · 08/10/2016 12:43

SAHG reads just like SAG
