AIBU?

To think that black is the only colour for a car?

Apart from cute little Fiats or whatever, which can carry pink, lime green etc quite happily...
But a grown up car: can it be a colour that's not black? Or maybe, at a pinch, very dark metallic grey?
And if it's black outside, does it have to be black inside as well?
Obviously I use the term 'has to' loosely and not in a sense that everyone will be willing to recognise. But basically, if you were buying a car, and had some input as to colour, would you go for anything that wasn't black?

Thanks IfIhad, it's called 'Dakota Grey' and thankfully, it doesn't get too dirty.

Am I the only person to find black cars sexy? I dream about having a black X6 with black alloys and black windows. Drool...

So does DP 🙄 I on the other hand dream of a baby blue fiat whilst sitting in my white BMW which apparently is more dream worthy I just think they are so cute!

My DH says that bright or unusual coloured cars cost more to insure as they are often custom boy racer types. However my DH says a lot of other enlightening things that he has been told by blokes down the pub as well!

We have a sort of gunmetal coloured car at the moment, and have always bought used so the colour is an afterthought compared to mileage/age etc.

The only unnaceptable colour for a car IMO is the colour that my Grandparents' ancient Volvo went. I think it started off gold but 20 years of sunlight turned it a weird metallic salmon colour Confused. It looked vile.

My dad had a thing about our cars being highly visible for safety. Consequently we spent our childhood in a succession of bright yellow DAFs blush known as the "yellow perils"

Late FIL always swore the same. Said he'd never have a black car because you couldn't see them. The first week with our black car DH swore the same after successfully avoiding several knobs Grin

All colours are ok except pink, orange and purple.

They're just nasty!

Black cars aren't as visible at night.

My current car is silver, but that's only because my Dad passed it on to me, I would never have chosen that colour for myself - simply because there are so many silver cars around. At times it's really quite hard to find it in a supermarket car park full of silver cars.

My first car was a sort of cream/pale yellow. I still think it's one of the nicest colours and I quite pine for another like that.

The only acceptable colours are black, dark grey or silver. I thought that was obvious.

Unless you have a Ferrari. Then they have to be red. Obviously.

Unless you are an undertaker OP. If you are an undertaker than black is the only colour for a larger car.

I hate my black car... I love the car but the paint work drives me nuts... scratches scuffs from car parks show and it always looks dull unless I've just waxed it..

My other car is gun metal gray car and I love it! Always looks clean.

If you have a black car, you have to have tan/cream leather interior. Not black. It's, like, the rules.

Y'know this safety/can't see them as clearly thing? That what the car has lights for. And increasingly daytime running lights so they're on all the time. So not being visible is less of an argument than it was.

And black cars are still best! Wink

Hell no, seriously, black cars are the worst for getting cut up/ pulled out on. No one seems to notice them. I like metallic blue for cars.

Wasn't that what Ford said when coloured cars were first marketed by a competitor?:
"You can have a Ford in any colour.... as long as it's black."

Am a bit worried at all the posters who think colours like silver and black imply boring owners. Seriously, you get your rocks in life from your car colour? Are you the same people who wear yellow socks to show you're interesting? How boring your actual lives must be...

If you look at the second-hand car market, cars in silly colours cost less and the original owner has taken a bigger hit on them regarding depreciation. As the majority of cars are bought by companies, why would they want to lose money? Therefore standard silvers/greys are the norm. Black suits many cars and red and light blue can be ok for smaller ones. A bright red Range Rover would be yuk and never sell. Ditto a yellow one. A dark blue Range Rover with a cream interior is classy.

White cars are the only colour on the roads in Dubai, whatever the car. White is a bit overdone but minis suit white as do Firstas and other small cars. Usually no extra charge for paint either. Matt paint in any colour is gangster!

Lol at range rovers being classy Grin they are mainly driven by trashy wannabe WAGs round here!

We have lease cars through work and I never request the colour, I just say whatever rolls off the production line next will do. The company question my sanity I'm sure. So every three years I pitch up at the office to swap my car and as I drive in say 'oh it's blue (or red or whatever obviously) I thought I couldn't care less.
This year they changed the system and it was brought to my home. As they pulled up I said 'oh. It's black. Black ??? Really ?? Oh. I don't think I like black. Oh dear'

Red, sort of gold or something bright. Brown or black and stupid buggers dont notice it, especially important when everyone is always on the brick phone. Changed cars ( the brown one was hit when parked) and am obviously getting seen now. For your own safety, dont buy a black car.

But i buy second hand so no choice. And as someone else says, beyond practicality i am not sad enough to care about car colour!

If you are stuck with silver, find it in a car park by parking correctly, i.e. reversing in. Most.cant do that.

I love Champagne on certain cars and perhaps red on sports cars.
Black if metallic, on Mercedes Jeep (only)

I like white, but then you usually have a pale beigey interior, which shows the dirt more.

I prefer dark blue to black, I would always choose blue for my own car. But I might consider dark maroon red, or dark green, or even very dark purple if I couldn't have blue.

I really don't like silver or grey, but it appears I am in the minority.

I don't like red either, but I am strangely drawn to other stupidly stand-out colours like yellow and orange and lime green (have never acted on this, which is probably for the best.) I think if you have an eye-catching car, you have to be a very good driver, or everyone remembers you forever. I'm not good enough at parking to have a brightly coloured car Grin.

YABU. Black cars get hotter than white cars. Silver is a good colour for keeping cool in summer, in addition to not showing dirt and scratches.

Where we live gets stupid hot in the summer. I can't remember the last time I saw a black car.

Black cars are bastards for washing without smearing.

And I heard the opposite about red cars re: accidents, in that they were more likely to be involved.
