To think the Malteaser advert is in really poor taste

Just seen a Malteaser advert where a woman in a wheelchair is talking to 2 friend in the park about her date.

The jist is she had a spasm, he enjoyed the repercussions, and whilst demonstrating her hand actions the malteasers shoot out of the bag and go every where.

Is it me or is that really bad taste?

Reminds me of the banned Skittle advert, with the bride and groom.

Judydreamsofhorses · 04/10/2016 23:01

I think they're great. The agency worked with Scope while developing the campaign, but if people are genuinely offended by them they should write to the ASA.

MrsJayy · 04/10/2016 23:04

Somebody was complaining about the scope awkward adverts last week think thread was deleted though poster found them offensive

RazWaz · 04/10/2016 23:05

Soubriquet - my cats are always buggering off with mine! They love batting them around and the left one has a bunch of tiny bite marks on it now. I usually keep them in a case at night but if I forget they are never in the same place by morning and I have to withhold kitties morning kibble until they are return them.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 04/10/2016 23:05

I dunno. I just don't want to particularly think of hand-jobs while eating Maltesers. They're two very different experiences. In my world, anyway...

Bearbehind · 04/10/2016 23:06

But it doesn't explicitly say that does it mrsjay

This advert does.

I also think those trying to say it's a social message about disability are giving Msltesers makers more credit than they've earned- they've just found a way to make wanking a socially acceptable way to advertise their product.

I guess it has got me talking about their product, but it's spunk like connotations have put me right off buying any ever again. Grin

bear, it's the definition of a double entendre. Unless you have had an exceptionally restrained sex life, you cannot really think this is literal.

ColintheCrow · 04/10/2016 23:09

Loved it... above watershed times... vv funny and lauded for originality and daring amongst many communities. I'd much rather a similar series of ads than the other tat we see.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 04/10/2016 23:09

raz. Had to go back and read through the thread properly - thought you were talking about Maltesers and was a bit eurgh.....

RumAppleGinger · 04/10/2016 23:11

It's on after the watershed and depicts a woman telling a funny story to her mates.

I'd much rather watch that than hear Nicole Scherzinger climaxing yet again over shampoo or yogurt or whatever has worked her up into a sexual frenzy this time.

MrsJayy · 04/10/2016 23:12

Bearbehind you wont be able to open a bag of maltesers again switch to flake

Bearbehind · 04/10/2016 23:14

lrd a double entendre has 2 meaning, an innocent one and a sexual one.

This advert is about wanking, there's absolutely no innocent second meaning. That's what the women are talking about.

One of the women demonstrates the hand action caused by her spasm then uses the maltesers to demonstrate her partners ejaculation.

You clearly haven't seen the advert you as you just don't get this.

Dawndonnaagain · 04/10/2016 23:15

Dawndonna's Dd here. I am a wheelchair user, I have spasms. I'm 20 and this is exactly the way we are at the pub , the way I am with my sister etc. I really don't care who is offended because as others have stated this is about allowing those of us with disabilities a wee piece of your world. A teeny tiny bit of inclusion as a person, a funny, storytelling sexual being who just so happens to be sitting down. A person doing and discussing the things young adults do. Just for once we're not overlooked, (quite literally at times) we are part of it and we are creating the joke rather than being the offensive butt of it. Let us make the most of it because trust me, it will be off air before Christmas, never to see the light of day again. That's the Paralympic effect.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/10/2016 23:15

bear, I know what a double entendre is - I already defined it upthread, right?

And, sorry if I'm being too innocent, but you do know men don't actually, literally ejaculate maltesers, right?

Bearbehind · 04/10/2016 23:17

Ffs lrd I said it was a demonstration not the really thing Hmm

OP posts:
LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/10/2016 23:18

Oh, good lord.

Yes, dear. That's why it's a double entendre.

Tarttlet · 04/10/2016 23:20

"I also think those trying to say it's a social message about disability are giving Msltesers makers more credit than they've earned- they've just found a way to make wanking a socially acceptable way to advertise their product."

No, they've produced a series of adverts that are all about challenging viewers' perceptions of people who are disabled in various ways. I don't see why wanking is any more offensive than any other sex-related theme in an advert, of which there are literally thousands.

If we're talking about which adverts are offensive, I find the Flake advert - with its obvious male gaze and soft-porn lens - FAR more offensive than this one, which offers a far more realistic view of sex - and, more importantly - of who can appear as a sexual being.

HerFaceIsaMapOfTheWorld · 04/10/2016 23:21

all malteaser adverts are annoying

Bearbehind · 04/10/2016 23:21

It's not a fucking double entendre if it's a demonstration of a sexual act- there's no alternative meaning.

It's a reenactment without the actual cock.

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 04/10/2016 23:22

Im able bodied and i think these ads are hilarious.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 04/10/2016 23:22

While I don't find it offensive, I disagree that it's a 'double entendre'. The latter usually has a suggested meaning, ambiguity or involves wordplay. I'm not really seeing the innuendo in this ad, it's fairly explicit!

WorraLiberty · 04/10/2016 23:22

I don't see the connection between normalising disability and advertising chocolate Hmm

Really??

How many disabled people do you generally see in TV ads?

I'll tell you - hardly any.

So using disabled actors to advertise anything, is surely a step closer to normalising disability?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/10/2016 23:25

Um ... we've just established that even you don't think maltesers are actual jizz.

Therefore, there is an alternative meaning.

Meaning no 1 (for the slow of thinking): woman spills her sweets as she re-enacts her seizure.

Meaning no 2: woman alludes to her partner's ejaculation.

Yes?

So, two meanings.

Should a child be watching post-watershed, he or she would think the woman had split her sweets and was embarrassed because of that.

But, we adults (or most of us) recognise the double entendre, and understand she's enjoying the innuendo.

This is the sort of visual joke adverts have been relying on for donkey's years. It's not new or particularly complex!

Fleekorunique · 04/10/2016 23:26

Im still laughing about Ali G reference

Bearbehind · 04/10/2016 23:26

I'm not offended by it as such, I just think using walking to advertise chocolate is a bit grim.

I agree that a lot of adverts are sexualised but this seems a step too far to me but I'll get over it!
