To think the Malteaser advert is in really poor taste

Just seen a Malteaser advert where a woman in a wheelchair is talking to 2 friend in the park about her date.

The jist is she had a spasm, he enjoyed the repercussions, and whilst demonstrating her hand actions the malteasers shoot out of the bag and go every where.

Is it me or is that really bad taste?

I said it was my interpretation afteir you asked for opinions, which you then picked apart - like you did with everyone else who hasn't agreed with you and took the bait

I am not the OP. I simply posted my opinion. I didn't ask for the opinions of anyone else. I have my own personal opinion, and nothing will shake it.
My opinion is that the advert is in bad taste. I am very conversant and involved with people who have manifold disabilities and I certainly never
asked anyone on here for an 'opinion'

As a SEN teacher for the past 30+ years,, including adult 'children'
who need advice about sex, I think I've heard it all and seen it all.
And for all my SEN teaching experience, I think this advert is bad taste.
Indeed, as it might be for an AB person. This ad relies on the woman having a fit. I can imagine finding it funny if one of my friends actually had it happen to them, and decided to share the experience with me
Which I doubt that they would. Even people with LD have boundaries.
That's only 30 years as a LD teacher though. So what do I know?

metaphoricus, nancy was having a go at me not you.

Actually on reflection I've changed my mind and am going with visual metaphor. I still think it's funny though, haven't changed my mind about that :)

This thread will die a death pretty soon so the final scores on the doors look like:-

19 v7 on the 'it's not a double entendre' debate

Completely divided on whether ejaculating maltesers are grim or funny.

Who needs further education when you have MN!

metaphoricus · 06/10/2016 22:53

OK Bear Nancy was responding to you. Not me.
Still, I think this advert tacky and 'Eeew' and juvenile and tasteless. The youngsters here, however, have a different view.

I have to suck that up.

I do spend a lot of time with SEN adults.and I don't think this advert will be fully understood by any of them. So no getting up in arms on their behalf. I just think it's a tasteless tacky advert. Simple as that.

You missed my vote from earlier

Thanks for your input Rhoda

As I said, I was considering another angle. Interesting post.

SpaceUnicorn · 07/10/2016 00:39

I don't see the connection between normalising disability and advertising chocolate

Surely the 'normalisation' of disability comes about by presenting disability in instances where there is no explicit connection - i.e. In exactly the same way that a non-disabled actor would be used.

iminshock · 07/10/2016 00:58

Agree with OP
Hideous ad

metaphoricus · 07/10/2016 01:05

I'm off to bed now. I think DH might have a pack of Maltesers in his pocket.

IWasGintyMarlowe · 07/10/2016 01:14

SpaceUnicorn and that can only be a good thing, i feel. there needs to be more inclusion of disabled people in the media

Bearbehind · 07/10/2016 06:16

spaceunicorn not sure why you quoted a post from page 1 of a 20 page thread? Hmm

Score update 20 v 7

OP posts:
BugPlaster · 07/10/2016 06:34

I agree OP and I do think it matters that they have chosen this topic under the guise of normalising disability, like they think they can get away with bad taste for the greater good of showing a disabled person talking about normal things. It has got nothing to do with chocolate. It is so far removed from being a good advert. Makes me feel a bit sick thinking about it.

SpaceUnicorn · 07/10/2016 07:22

spaceunicorn not sure why you quoted a post from page 1 of a 20 page thread? hmm

Why wouldn't I, when the post contained a point that I wished to respond to?

Have I broken some 'rule' of your thread? Why the rudeness of the 'Hmm'?

Bearbehind · 07/10/2016 08:48

Because the point you made was discussed numerous times over the nearly 500 posts that followed the one you quoted.

It's not 'a rule of my thread' it's just common sense to think that, if you go onto a thread that's 20 pages but only read the first few post, the point you want to make has probably been covered somewhere on the next 20 pages.

It's my pet hate on forums- I don't understand why anyone posts on any thread without RTFT, but as 'cancelled the cheque' is testament to, plenty of people seem to.

Sorry- I'm very grumpy this morning spaceunicorn

Blush

I completely agree that disability shouldn't even be a factor in this advert, the advert is just grim IMO. Nothing to do with the actors, it's about what they are doing to advertise chocolate.

I think it's a real shame that the disabled community have to take inclusion in this as a victory. I realise it's because they are marginalised but to be pleased to be part of something that divides opinion on whether it is in very poor taste or not is quite sad to me.

I think Malteasers have exploited the to push boundaries beyond what would have been acceptable with abled bodied actors.

And that precludes me from expressing a viewpoint, does it?

It's my pet hate on forums

We all have 'pet hates' on forums (mine is people telling others how they should and shouldn't interact on a thread), but unless something breaks the posting guidelines we have be tolerant.

Enjoy your thread.

SpaceUnicorn · 07/10/2016 09:03

Cross-posted - I'm maybe not in the best of moods myself either. Here's a Brew Smile

Bearbehind · 07/10/2016 09:06

Thanks Smile

Where do you stand on the great 'double entendre debate? Grin

I think that might actually be one of the most patronising things I've ever read.... Shock

MrsJayy · 07/10/2016 09:27

And meShock do you think the disabled community are not smutty or crude Bear that they are all special and lovely because of their disability

Bearbehind · 07/10/2016 09:27

I don't mean it to sound patronising and I don't want this to get into a battle about disabled people not needing me to feel sorry for them because that's absolutely not what I mean.

It's very hard to express with just text but the point I'm trying to make is that disabled people should be included much more widely and shouldn't have to settle for being part of something that half of us find in very bad taste.

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 07/10/2016 09:30

Why not ? Disabled people are just people why shouldnt this advert divide opinions

notanetter · 07/10/2016 09:32

But that is inclusion (I realise, btw, that you didn't mean to sound patronising). Inclusion isn't about only being allowed to participate in stuff that is universally popular, or approved. Who, exactly, do you think is "settling for" anything here?

Bearbehind · 07/10/2016 09:35

Because I don't believe the advert would have been allowed if an abled bodied person had been used. (Obviously they'd have had to find a way to include wanking without a spasm)

I think Maltesers exploited this by using a disabled actress but I agree it's just my opinion.

To me it would be much better if disabled and abled bodied people could feature in adverts interchangeably.

Yes people are always going to have different opinions on what they think is in good or bad taste regardless of disability.
