To ask if you think 6 fish fingers is too many for a 3 year old boy to have for dinner?

along with half a 400g run of baked beans and chips.

Need to settle an arguement.

Cheers

Ah, I am wrong then as I suspected an OP V DH post! I would be cross about that much food too. Is she or your OH overweight?

MrsHam13 · 04/10/2016 20:32

Absolutely yes even my eleven year old wouldn't/couldn't eat that much.

My three year old boy would eat one at a push two. Maybe two tablespoons of beans and a small amount of chips.

TheFairyCaravan · 04/10/2016 20:34

My MIL fed DS1 3 mince pies and a piece of chocolate cake when he was 1. I was fuming. She cleared up the vomit from her cream carpet about an hour later, no way was I bloody doing it.

Penfold007 · 04/10/2016 20:35

That's in excess of a thousand calories!

wiltingfast · 04/10/2016 20:37

If he ate it no. He must have been hungry? Fish fingers aren't that filling tbh.

BasinHaircut · 04/10/2016 20:39

I usually give him 3. He would eat those and the beans before the chips. He isn't really a potato fan but I'd prefer he had a yoghurt or something after dinner than double fish fingers.

I said to her that I didn't want him over-fed as I didn't want to encourage a weight problem. She thought I was being ridiculous as he is currently slim and never sits still, but he eats consistently well so it's not as though he needs to make up for days that he doesn't eat much.

Dixie....30lbs??? As in over two stone in four weeks?? That's crazy has she been taken to the doctors to check her thyroid? even eating a lot I cant imagine that much being gained in 4 weeks.

3000 calories is one pound. That's 90,000 calories she'd of needed to overeat above her daily recommend intake. 3214 calories extra a day on top of her normal output?? what the hell was she feeding her??

mygorgeousmilo · 04/10/2016 20:43

Way too much, and my kids eat loads! I normally split a tin of beans between 4, 4 fish fingers each, but maybe a dollop of mash or waffle. Mine are older than three

GingerbreadLatteToGo · 04/10/2016 20:43

Why? That makes no sense that me.

HerFaceIsaMapOfTheWorld · 04/10/2016 20:44

YES i dont even eat that many

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/10/2016 20:46

Presumably he doesn't eat at MIL every night?
I don't think it's the end of the world.

My own 3yo is surprisingly good at self regulating - you might find he doesn't eat so much tomorrow?

SolomanDaisy · 04/10/2016 20:49

Did he actually eat it? I'd imagine most kids his age would just stop when they were full if they weren't used to that sort of portion size.

Stevefromstevenage · 04/10/2016 20:50

My mother was helping us out with DS for September minding him for a couple of hours in the middle of the day. He was spoilt absolutely rotten by the folks. Turns out he had chicken nuggets and chips every day. I was Hmm but tbf they were doing us a huge favour so I just let it go. Some grandparents do not have an off switch where their ddddgc are concerned.

On balance ds gets far more than he loses out on having a fantastic relationship with him. I would not sweat the small stuff where GPs are concerned.

Ditsy4 · 04/10/2016 20:50

Yes far too many. I would prefer to give a child a piece of fish than that many. Therefore giving the child more fish and less breadcrumbs and oven cooked rather than fried. Fill up on a piece of fruit.

Lightsoffplease · 04/10/2016 20:52

Yes. My kids young dc have only 4 each and they're very active kids

I said to her that I didn't want him over-fed as I didn't want to encourage a weight problem

surely the way to go about that is to encourage self regulation and therefore be okay if some meals he eats less and some days he eats more???

luckylavender · 04/10/2016 20:55

DS 20 would eat 6, but he wouldn't have anything else except ketchup

1DAD2KIDS · 04/10/2016 21:02

I know we could argue that all kids are different (and the are) but 6 sounds way of the scale to me. I only have four myself (possibly 5 if I am staving) of the normal little ones with chips and beans when I am making them for the kids. Because that is quite sufficient for me and I am a 6 foot, large built male who works hard and does fitness a few times a week. My 5 year old has 3 and 18 month old has 2 (and he is a big strong boy for his age, chip of the old block I would say).

Lavenderhues · 04/10/2016 21:05

Why would yoghurt be better than the fish fingers? I think it's a lot but if he's hungry he's hungry - what would you have her do?
My youngest 2 dc eat loads - think 3 egg cheese omelette followed by cereal for my 4 year old Confused I do sometimes boggle at the amount they can put away but it's not like I can let them go hungry!!
Ultimately it's an overall picture of health not a snapshot that counts.

robinia · 04/10/2016 21:06

Nope. If he's hungry enough to eat it all it's not too much. I'd be wary of the nutritional content - I'd be unlikely to serve that much salt in one meal, and would not bother with the chips - but in the context of a generally healthy diet I don't see it as a problem.

BertrandRussell · 04/10/2016 21:07

Why would you serve beans with fish fingers and chips? Wouldn't you usually do peas or something green?

6 does seem a lot but I'd rather mine had more fish fingers and not a yoghurt.

robinia · 04/10/2016 21:07

Shocked at how little some children eat.

wildcoffeeandbeans · 04/10/2016 21:08

I agree that's too large a portion but I'm Hmm at all those think the correct portion is 1 fishstick, 4 chips and a tablespoon of beans (unless they mean giant oven chips? I only ever get the skinny French fries, if I buy them at all).

user1471531273 · 04/10/2016 21:08

In laws can be odd. Mine would state proudly how my child had eaten 6 fish fingers for lunch..... 😳 Literally just 6 fish fingers!

They used to help with childcare before starting school. It was a difficult conversation to ask for a balanced meal, they are soo easily offended and then give the silent treatment.
