To ask if you think 6 fish fingers is too many for a 3 year old boy to have for dinner?

along with half a 400g run of baked beans and chips.

Need to settle an arguement.

Cheers

I'm curious to know the context of the question. OP, you said this was to settle an argument?

Oysterbabe · 04/10/2016 20:16

I haven't eaten a fish finger in years. Used to love a fish finger sandwich with cheese and ketchup when I had a hangover.

megletthesecond · 04/10/2016 20:17

yes.

My 9yr old DS usually has 3, sometimes 4 fishfingers. Thats usually with beans / peas and jacket potato / mash.

YuckYuckEwwww · 04/10/2016 20:17

Depends on the rest of the day

At that age one of my DDs would turn her nose up at lunch (no matter what it was) and load up massively at dinner.. I was fine with it because averaged out her daily intake was IMO about average/right

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 04/10/2016 20:17

I would only have 3 and I'm a grown adult!

Libby34 · 04/10/2016 20:18

3yo SD would eat one tablespoon of beans, a small handful (maybe 5 or 6) chips and one fish finger. And it would be a battle to get her to eat all of that. 6 fish fingers for a 3 year old has absolutely blown my mind Confused not sure if it's true but I heard our stomachs are approximately the same size as our fists, a toddlers fist is tiny. I think if it was my DC I would be booking a doctors appointment... but then like others have said, it depends how they eat during the rest of the day. If every meal is like that I'd be concerned - but less so if say your DC doesn't snack between lunch and dinner and has been exercising a lot in between. Grin

I assume by your tone..You want MN to tell them its not ok?

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/10/2016 20:20

oysterbabe I prefer salad cream in mine mmmmm

whomovedmychocolate · 04/10/2016 20:20

Unless he's a hippo, yes.

lastqueenofscotland · 04/10/2016 20:21

Yes less than half that would be more appropriate

GingerbreadLatteToGo · 04/10/2016 20:21

I wouldn't care how many other children eat or how many he ate if he was hungry. Sometimes they'll barely touch dinner, other times they'll eat more than me. They're skinny (you can see their ribs) and they eat according to hunger, not what's on their plate.

waterrat · 04/10/2016 20:22

He should have some carbs with beans and fish fingers. They aren't very nutritious and maybe he was hungry because fish fingers plus beans isn't very filling.

AllTheUsernamesAreTaken3 · 04/10/2016 20:22

6 fishfingers, half a can of beans and a small portion of chips come in at well over 700 calories. That's half of the maximum total calories he needs in a day, and supposes a moderate level of activity.
He might look chubby and adorable now, or not chubby at all yet, but keep that up and he'll soon be on his way to Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 04/10/2016 20:24

It sounds a lot but if he is hungry, he is hungry.
I find kids at that age to be a bit like snakes; it's not so much what they eat in a day but what they eat in a week. He could also have a growth spurt coming on, DS used to eat more than me during those.

(To compare, DD had 4 fish fingers, 2 water crackers, 1 banana, lots of water + 1/2 pint of milk for dinner today, she is nearly 6. We find her v 'normal' appetite wise, if there is such a thing. )

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 04/10/2016 20:24

My 9 and 12 year old boys have 4 if they're having a FF sandwich. Tall, slim OH will put away 8 with 4 slices of bread and lashings of tobasco sauce!

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 04/10/2016 20:26

P.S: She also had a medium bowl of cucumber & carrot sticks before the fish fingers; best way to get veggies in her is when she's really hungry ...

Bogeyface · 04/10/2016 20:27

It is far too much, thats the amount I would eat!

Now we need to know who served him this and who objected to it!

5minutestobed · 04/10/2016 20:27

My 3 year old would have two plus a spoonful of mash and maybe 2 table spoons of beans.
I don't think I could even eat 6 fish fingers!

CrohnicallyAspie · 04/10/2016 20:27

DD (almost 4, big appetite) had fish fingers for tea tonight... 3 fish fingers, about 10 oven chips, 1/3 tin of beans, 1 slice of bread and butter.

Tonight she ate all the fish and beans, most of the bread but left the chips. On another night she might have eaten the bread and chips but left the rest. I find that she self regulates and eats a balanced diet over the week, so if she eats more protein for one dinner, she might eat more carbs the next day.

Hence I give her a decent size plate of food, she eats what she wants, leaves what she doesn't, and I never encourage her to eat more than she wants (unless she's trying it on in the hope that she'll get snacky things later, even then it's just a comment that 'not very hungry? Remember, there's nothing else before the next meal')

BasinHaircut · 04/10/2016 20:27

Thanks all. Sorry for keeping you in suspense but I posted that and ate my dinner, not expecting that many responses!

Anyway yes it was my son who had that for dinner tonight. MIL gave it to him and was most put out when I told her that it was too much and asked her not to do it again.

Far to much for a 3 year old a portion is 2 or 3 not 6 does the 3yr old normally eat that much

I think that is a lot. My 10 year old would eat about a quarter of a can of beans with 3 or 4 fishfingers and a slice of toast.

TheFairyCaravan · 04/10/2016 20:30

DS2 (19) would eat that! I couldn't, I'd eat the fish fingers and a couple of spoons of beans.
