Birthday party at our wedding venue

I probably am...

Dh and I got married 3 years ago near the town I grew up in. Hired out a little village hall. When we found it it turned out my dad knew the manager, but none of my family had been to anything there before.

Lovely wedding, lovely little hall.

Dm text this week (group message) to say she's going to book the hall for her birthday party. I know I don't have eternal dibs on the hall but i just don't like it - and sounds silly I know. She can be quite suffocating (unintentionally I'm sure) and this feels like an extension of that.

So. Aibu to feel this way... and wibu to say something?!

So your mum is having a party at a village hall?

whinetasting · 01/10/2016 09:40

You are being unreasonable. And odd. Sorry, but this is a bit weird. You can't have dibs on a hall!

exLtEveDallas · 01/10/2016 09:40

Yes YABU and yes YWBU if you said anything.

Donthate · 01/10/2016 09:40

Of course you are being unreasonable. It's a village hall, it's up for hire for whoever wants to have a party there.

Bizarre thing to get upset about!

Realhousewivesofshit · 01/10/2016 09:40

I honestly don't understand your post.

It's a public venue.

harderandharder2breathe · 01/10/2016 09:40

Yabvu

It's a hall. Loads of people hire it out. Your wedding was three years ago. Hundreds of parties will have been held there since. Don't understand what your DM has done wrong

In all my many years on MN, I genuinely think this is the most bonkers OP I've seen.

sonjadog · 01/10/2016 09:41

Yes, it would be ridiculous for you to say anything about it. I thought you were going to say the party was the week before your wedding or something. Three years after the event makes it a non-issue.

neonrainbow · 01/10/2016 09:41

Don't be so ridiculous.

MidnightRunner87 · 01/10/2016 09:41

Yep very unreasonable, even more so if you say something.

JammyDodger16 · 01/10/2016 09:41

Yes I think YABU. I live in a village and I frequently go to events at the same hall, for the same families - weddings, parties, funerals

Do you think she is trying to get to you on purpose? Does she know the hall is something you would be bothered by?

SpookyPotato · 01/10/2016 09:42

There must be some pretty bad history between you two if this is upsetting.

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 01/10/2016 09:42

Yeah, thought I was.

I didn't say upset, I just said don't like it.

Clearly there is more underlying stuff than I thought!

Thank you

Sorry, you're being completely unreasonable, I'm afraid. You're right that you don't have dibs on the hall. It's a nice venue that is presumably close to you and your dad knows the manager. There are lots of reasons to book it that are nothing to do with your wedding.

fastdaytears · 01/10/2016 09:42

I thought you meant there was a party going on at the same time which would be a bit odd!

3 years later? Wow!

MoreGilmoreGirls · 01/10/2016 09:42

Yes YABU but sounds like there is more to this and this is the latest in a series of annoyances from your DM I'm afraid you are just going to have to suck it up though.

thatsn0tmyname · 01/10/2016 09:42

I thought you meant there would be a birthday party on the same day as your wedding. I don't see a problem with a three year gap.

CeolNaMara · 01/10/2016 09:42

On a first read this sounds quite an odd reaction.

Do you know why you don't like the idea of your mum using the hall? What is it that takes away from your own wedding? There must be something more than you have written, surely?

BumWad · 01/10/2016 09:42

LOL

I thought you were going to say that a family member wanted to gate-crash your reception and have their birthday party at the same time!
YABU. Your wedding was 3 years ago. Get over it.

ceeveebee · 01/10/2016 09:44

Totally unreasonable!
If you wanted no one to ever use your wedding venue again you should have bought it!
