To think friend is out of order.

Got a call last night from close friend asking for my mums phone number as she had bumped into her and my stepdad in the pub and my mum had left her purse. So far sounds like they had a merry night and my mum was lucky after getting forgetful.

Fast forward this morning my friend text saying she'd borrowed some money off my mum but said it was complicated and wanted to talk on the phone. Apparently her relative went into my mums not her purse to buy a round of drinks! Is this theft? It wasn't agreed and if it was accidental as she said she would take the money from her purse and put it in my mums.

That's wierd- why didn't your friends auntie just replace the money straight away? Odd. She should just give the money back to your mum. Get that purse back ASAP before anymore goes missing!!

She has given my mum the purse back saying she owes her the money. I agree if it was simple just replace the money! I want to pay my mum back but limited finances as not all of my maternity pay has kicked in x

Easily done.

Your mum leaves her purse on the table.

Friend tells relative "take the money from my purse that's on the table to buy a round". Relative takes money from your mum's purse without realising it is not your friends.

Mistake noticed today by friend and relative, probably when relative comments on friend's purse.

Your mum is lucky the purse is being returned... You can't accuse someone of theft on an item you left behind whilst "merry".

Look, if your mum was merry she probably wouldn't notice the fact that the money for a small round of drinks had gone missing from her purse when it was returned to her today. Your friend has let you know it has - she's been honest and upfront about it.

Why would she do that if it was always her and her relative's intention to take money from your mum's purse?

Your mum has had her purse returned, and will shortly have the correct amount of money in it. She hasn't had to go through the pain of cancelling bank cards and sorting out new driving licences. I think your friend has done your mum a huge favour here.

I agree. They were all a bit merry. Relative got the wrong purse. Maybe friend buys another round as there's still cash in her purse. Money runs out.

Nothing shady here - they admited everything, labelled it as a loan (weird situation for sure) and I assume will pay back?

I lost my purse last week and it had everything in it. I'm in the process of getting new cards etc but its a bloody nightmare. If someone had returned my purse I wouldn't have cared if they had taken my money I'd just be over the moon to get it back

But how would they have known the relative took money out of the wrong purse if it's assumed the relative didn't know whose purse was who? And when it did come to light, why didn't they replace the money straight away without even mentioning it? I would be too embarrassed to give the purse back without the right money in!

Mozfan different people have different financial situations. Some people don't have very much space in their budget.

They shouldn't have spent money they couldn't pay back and that they took out of someone else's purse in that case then Anything.

Maybe they only realised it was the wrong purse that the money was taken after they had returned the purse.

Maybe the friend went to buy a takeaway and realised she had more money in her purse than she should have and asked relative "I asked you to get a round of drinks from my purse, did you? I seem to have too much money".

That kind of thing.

I think what's happened is friend told relative to go in her (friends) purse as its her round.

Relative went in op Mum's purse thinking it was friends.

WineContinue to drink until resources dry up...Wine

On leaving friend discovers op Mum's bag still there - "oh op mum left bag!"

Friend relative, "I thought that was YOUR bag! I took money for a round!"

Now they have mistakenly borrowed money with no way to pay it back immediately.

They own up to mistake.

I would be pissed off tbh. And would expect the money back ASAP. It's not like they 'borrowed' it for something important. I guess you could argue the mum shouldn't leave her purse unattended, but if you can't trust you friends Confused

I wouldn't behave that way, but I wouldn't be pissed off if it happened to me. These things happen when people have a drink. It's not the end of the world.

Yeah I think it shows your friend in a good light actually. She could have kept stchum but has owned up to it. I think anythung has probably got the sequence of events right.

I can understand accidentally taking it out of the wrong purse, I can't understand not replacing it straight away.
