To think it's odd that DD wasn't allowed to wear a tank top for non uniform and was made to put on her PE top?

DD is 10 and they have a bloody non uniform day Shock so soon already (it was a charity thing). Not that I care, by DD faffs around all night deciding what to wear.

She wore a tank top and jeans. Oh no, that wasn't allowed? We weren't given a list of things that were allowed/weren't allowed. She was told she needed at least short sleeves so had to put on her PE polo.

Isn't this really odd?

Just because something is deemed not suitable for school/work/church/weddings/funerals - does NOT mean it is body shaming. They are different things.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/09/2016 14:46

But now is it not suitable

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/09/2016 14:47

When people kits are cycling shirts. Tight and "revealing" and don't cover all the thigh. That's OK but that top isn't?

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/09/2016 14:47

Pe kits

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/09/2016 14:50

Tats not to say I think pe kits are inappropriate. I don't. But if the scholarship say a vest top isn't suitable then turn kids out in little more than hotpants and a t shirt is a bit hypocritical.

Or they could leave the poor kids alone and realise a kid in clothing is a kid in clothing and other people's thoughts r what's inappropriate

UnsuccessfullyAdulting · 24/09/2016 14:53

Laughing at the "inappropriateness" of a 10 year old getting her shoulders out. When we played netball at 11 I wore a vest and 8 inch long netball skirt..... As school uniform. Body shaming at 10. Good work ladies.

I can't remember mass comments about Samantha Cameron's shoulders

Or this woman's

Oh, and in the US, the origin of the term "tank top" is from "tank suit" which is a long existing term for a one-piece swimsuit from the days when pools were often referred to as tanks.

And as several folks have pointed out, the knitted woolly thing that would go over a shirt is called a sweater vest in the US. And what people in the UK call a waistcoat, we call a vest.

thecatsarecrazy · 24/09/2016 15:41

Its a vest. My only issue would be if she was warm enough

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 24/09/2016 15:47

Bloody hell! We all know it's a vest!!

diddl · 24/09/2016 15:55

It's not a vest!

They are for wearing under other clothes to keep warm!

SolomanDaisy · 24/09/2016 16:07

My DS's school doesn't have a uniform and both boys and girls wear that style of top in hot weather. I don't let DS because I don't want his shoulders to burn, but they're clearly not 'skimpy' or inappropriate!

ABunchOfFuckingPidgeys · 24/09/2016 16:41

I don't see why it's being called skimpy or inappropriate? What is inappropriate about female shoulders? About a 10 year old girls shoulders?

It's a good example of a unisex piece of clothing but I've never heard them being called skimpy or inappropriate when a boy wears them. Scruffy maybe or too casual, but with a boy the criticism is about the clothing, wheras with a girl it's her body that's criticised, she's showing naked shoulder, her developing breast too visible, she's showing off her sexuality.

If boys are uncomfortable around a ten year olds shoulders or make sexual comments then maybe they should be taken to task and made to change their behaviour, rather than have the girl change hers.

I also don't like the idea the school did this to protect her, again if boys think it's ok to touch girls because of what they are wearing, they need re educating. A girl in a Tshirt isn't anymore protected from sexual violence than a girl in a bikini, making her change her clothing in this context makes no sense and just makes the girl think her body is something to be hidden.

Its really sad in 2016, a girls shoulders on show is seen as inappropriate and rather than change the attitudes of other, the answer is for her to change what she's wearing and reinforce the sexist attitudes. A 10 year old boy wearing a vest would not be spoken about in the same way.

dailyarsewipe · 24/09/2016 16:42

So diddl - if you call what I call a vest a tank top. What would you call what I call a tank top? Do English people call them sweater vests too?

TheNaze73 · 24/09/2016 17:03

Surely that's a vest top? Tank tops were all the rage in the 1970's and woolley?

To think it's odd that DD wasn't allowed to wear a tank top for non uniform and was made to put on her PE top?
diddl · 24/09/2016 17:13

So, to me-

What Op's daughter wore is a vest top.

A vest looks the same but is underwear only.

A tank top is a sleeveless pullover.

Hygellig · 24/09/2016 17:19

I'm surprised - she's 10! If she's warm enough then I don't see the problem; sunburn isn't likely in this weather? They should probably specify what can and can't be worn for future non-uniform days. Some girls have worn similar tops at our school's non-uniform days.

dailyarsewipe · 24/09/2016 17:21

Aah, thought you were one of those who called a vest / vest top a tank top. I'm irrationally obsessed with finding out what people who call a vest top a tank top call a tank top Grin

diddl · 24/09/2016 17:27

Ooh no, Naze, that's a tank top.Grin

Or here in Germany a Pullunder.

Think it's called a slipover somewhere in the world!

mathanxiety · 24/09/2016 18:32

YY Diddl.

It's not a vest. It's a bona fide article of clothing, not underwear.

A 'wife beater' top has to be white and is probably stained down the front. It's basically an undershirt (or in UK English a vest) worn by losers who sit around in their underwear.

Michelle Obama's top is more of a 'muscle tank' in US parlance. It has a higher neckline than the scoopy tank top neckline, and the straps over the shoulder are a bit wider than your average tank top.
