To think it's odd that DD wasn't allowed to wear a tank top for non uniform and was made to put on her PE top?

Radia · 23/09/2016 22:41

DD is 10 and they have a bloody non uniform day Shock so soon already (it was a charity thing). Not that I care, by DD faffs around all night deciding what to wear.

She wore a tank top and jeans. Oh no, that wasn't allowed? We weren't given a list of things that were allowed/weren't allowed. She was told she needed at least short sleeves so had to put on her PE polo.

Isn't this really odd?

Ive worn those kind of tops for work, many women in my office did. Now I work from home though and since I'm the boss I can do what I want. I only have a DS and he's only gone in t shirts so I've no idea what the reaction would be if he were to wear a vest top. We aren't in a catholic school though the majority of his school are Muslim so there might be issues raised if I did send him in. As it is he is the only child who wears shorts pretty much.

I don't consider girls wearing vest tops inappropriate, I did myself growing up and do now. The only issue for me would be sun safety.

mathanxiety · 24/09/2016 07:23

My DDs wore those tops to school when the weather was warm enough. We are in the US though, and in a non-uniform school. When they were small they wore that style of top all summer long, very much not trying to show off their sexiness. They wore them to Mass too, as did nearly all the women there, as the church had no AC.

My DCs went to a RC elementary and I absolutely hated out of uniform days. The regulations were preposterous. The children were going home from school and changing into the same clothes that were banned in school. They were running around all summer in shorts and tank tops and even camisole style tops. The school talked the 'parents are the child's first educators' talk but in effect they second guessed the parents' judgement as to appropriate clothing for their children all the time.

(To me, having spent many years in the US, a vest top is something knitted and possibly woolly that you would wear over a shirt, whereas this is a cotton tank top. A vest in American English means a waistcoat or aforementioned woolly sleeveless top. A British or Irish vest meaning something to wear under your shirt to keep you warm is called an undershirt in the US).

TheWildOnes · 24/09/2016 07:29

AGenie I could see how that could be a problem if the girl is very mature and is trying to show off her sexuality.

Really pp! What a twattish thing to say. How could any 10 year old show off "her sexuality", she's 10 for fuck sake!

dailyarsewipe · 24/09/2016 07:34

I bet it's a RC thing as a PP said. Can they really allocate you a place in a RC school if you're not catholic? I think I'd have turned the place down, for all the reasons mentioned previously - definitely wouldn't want my kids in one. However, their school, their rules - although they should have told you in advance. Are you going to ask about it on Monday?

But more importantly, a tank top is wool and usually worn over a tshirt (long or short sleeved). If you call this a tank top, what do you call an actual tank top?

yeOldeTrout · 24/09/2016 07:44

They were called tank tops when I wore them to school 35 yrs ago (grew up in a hot country).
Yes I would wear / have worn one to work (professional offices).

imjessie · 24/09/2016 07:47

Is your ten year old developing or a bit chubby ( sorry but there is no other way of saying it ) and therefore has some budding visible ? Just wondered as that's the only reason why I can think they covered her up .

wtffgs · 24/09/2016 07:53

Teaching and support staff aren't allowed to wear tank tops even when it's absolutely baking hot. The staff are 98% female Hmm

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/09/2016 08:02

I would think it was about sun protection, but the school needs to give better guidance in future about what's acceptable on mufti days.

ClopySow · 24/09/2016 08:03

I could see how that could be a problem if the girl is very mature and is trying to show off her sexuality

Bingo. That's exactly the problem. Attitudes like that.

Keep that skin and those curves covered up people. Hide your bodies and sexuality. If you don't, the poor menz won't be able to keep their hands off the sluts and it'll be all their fault.

This thread is really depressing.

hazeyjane · 24/09/2016 08:10

FFS chubby, developing boobs....none of these things should prevent a 10 year old wearing a fecking vest/tank (and yes, they can be called both!)

pictish · 24/09/2016 08:11

I haven't read the whole thread but I am Shock at some of the replies on the first pag! Too skimpy? Inappropriate? Whhhaaat? It's just a plain old ordinary vest top!

Way to go to body shame and victim blame a 10 year old you bosom hoiking terrors!

OP - the top is fine - the school are being similarly stupid.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 24/09/2016 08:16

I am a finance professional working for a multinational. (Ie there is nothing fun and trendy about my office whatsoever!)

We have dress down Friday's.

There is a bloke who always wears tops like that. But tight and (see through) white.

I have to admit it is a strange choice for a bloke in his sixties but he seems happy.

A 10 year old wearing a loose one would not be a big deal at all.

Rachcakes · 24/09/2016 08:19

Did they have mass or any reason to go into church? It's a bit old fashioned but traditionally you'd have to have your shoulders covered in church.
I do still tend to observe that, and I think most do, although I wouldn't bat an eyelid at a 10 year old that didn't. It's just the way I was brought up.
I wonder if the school was trying to instill that?

pictish · 24/09/2016 08:21

"Well a huge proportion of 10 year olds are overweight. If your daughter is fat then that top would be both unflattering and inappropriate.
Could that be it?"

I think that comment gets the dumbass comment of the day award and it's only 8.15am.

My kids go to a RC school. Not that we're religious whatsoever...it's just a nice school. I have never heard of anything like this being trotted out on a non-uniform day. They seem to wear what they like, including sleeveless vest tops, without comment.

Hermanfromguesswho · 24/09/2016 08:23

It seems perfectly appropriate to me! I work in a catholic school and I wore a top pretty much identical to it yesterday, with black linen trousers. It's been really warm, there's nothing inappropriate about it!!!

dailyarsewipe · 24/09/2016 08:28

You're all missing the most important issue here.

What do you call an actual tank top?

pictish · 24/09/2016 08:30

I call an actual tank top a tank top.
I call what OP is referring to as a tank top, a vest top.

In America they call tank tops 'sweater vests' which I love.

dailyarsewipe · 24/09/2016 08:32

I agree with you on all counts, I'm intrigued by the notion of a vest top being called a tank top - I want to know more Smile

pictish · 24/09/2016 08:35

It's an Americanism I think.

To me it's a vest or sleeveless top and always has been. I don't know when we started calling them tank tops here in GB. I refute the trend.

Cakeycakecake · 24/09/2016 08:44

I wear tops like that to work. I work with kids. Nothing inappropriate about being comfy and work- who are quite strict with dress code- don't have an issue.
Imo you can't tell kids they can wear their own clothes and change the rules if you've not issued a list of banned items. Your poor dd op

diddl · 24/09/2016 08:47

Are they called tank tops in UK?

They are very casual, but it was school non uniform!!

Can't see the problem.

Here in Germany, what I would call a tank top is called a Pullunder!

RhiWrites · 24/09/2016 08:49

It looks fine. The school should have specified what the rules were (bet boys would have been allowed bare arms).

And these tops are often advertised as tank tops in the UK so the term OP used is accurate.

PGPsabitch · 24/09/2016 08:49

I wear those for work. Not inappropriate at all unless such poor quality material that they are see through.

hazeyjane · 24/09/2016 08:49

In America I think knitted tank tops are called a slipover or a sweater vest (actually those terms are used here too because I bought a 'knitted slipover' from M&S for dd2 for school)

Over here I see vests called vests or tank tops

Lots of American terms come here (as do terms from all around the world)

If you google image tank top you largely get images of vests like the op is talking about.

dailyarsewipe · 24/09/2016 09:04

I just saw that Hazey . I also love the idea of a pullunder. I'm going to try and motivate myself to get out of bed now and do something useful rather than derailing this thread.
