Really BBC ? Such a dramatic way of reporting on the BBC News page over a TV programme but then the story is Pro BBC sooooo....

Oh, I liked Mary Sad

Can't stand Paul Hollywood. Sleazy. Bully. No class at all.

I certainly shan't watch the show any more.

MackerelOfFact · 22/09/2016 13:17

Good on Mary. I'd be amazed if the BBC don't create a new show with Mary, Mel and Sue which will capture far more of the spirit of Bake Off than the C4 version will manage.

Paul Hollywood was always the most dispensable of the lot, IMO, and I agree it's overdue a format overhaul anyway. I'm sure the BBC can come up with something.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/09/2016 13:20

In other news, CJ from Eggheads has been arrested on suspicion of murder...

TheSpottedZebra · 22/09/2016 13:33

Popbitch has it that Mary turned down 7million Shock
And that the current favourites to replace (Mel and Sue?) are Gok and Alan Carr. I actually like Gok, and loved his cookery show, and he'd be ok I think. But not Alan Carr here.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/09/2016 13:35

I also can't see Jo Brand doing it -she's never been about the money, has she? And she's doing interesting things on the bbc, so I think she'd stay loyal.

My guesses for the 'lady baker' are Gizzi Erskine or Rosemary Shrager. Or her that makes wedding cakes, and did one for the Cambridge -Fiona Cairns?

raisedbyguineapigs · 22/09/2016 14:00

Those sums of money are making me quite annoyed actually. Channel 4 was set up as a not for profit TV channel, to be innovative and challenging. They can produce and commission excellent drama, documentaries and comedy and could and should be a commercial platform for new talent. The amount of money they have thrown down the drain on this could have been better spent elsewhere. They are little better than Channel 5 now. They will destroy Bakeoff and leave everything else on the channel much more poorly funded.Angry

Yorkieheaven · 22/09/2016 14:02

Could be Deliah but of course she girder need the dosh. Paul dispensable.

Elendon · 22/09/2016 14:11

Gok and Alan are as sleazy as Paul.

Will their first bake of challenge be the three sleaze pizza?

NewPotatoes · 22/09/2016 14:13

'So let's recap, we've got a large tent and a scouse bread expert and it cost us how much again?'

Pretty much! Grin

Elendon · 22/09/2016 14:14

Hasn't the runner up last year got a successful pudding restaurant in Birmingham? He was great.

Elendon · 22/09/2016 14:23

Sorry it was Ali Imdad. The runner up presents his own TV show on erm...channel 4 Grin

Dancergirl · 22/09/2016 14:41

I think it's a shame it's become all about the money, like many things these days. It started life as a cosy little baking competition on BBC2. So sad it's become the subject of a multi million pound war.

At risk of sounding like an old fogey (!), TV wasn't like this years ago. No-one knew about production companies or how much programmes cost to make. We just sat down and watched telly!

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 22/09/2016 15:12

Jay Hunt, chief creative officer of Channel 4, said: "Paul really is the star baker - an exceptional talent with a twinkle in his eye." She added: "His wit, warmth and wisdom are vital ingredients in Bake Off's success. I'm so delighted he's coming to Channel 4."

Bet she's actually panicking "Shit, what are we going to do???! He's the least popular thing about it. Everyone knows he's a twat."

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 22/09/2016 15:14

I seem to remember that when Paul had the misalliance in the States it was Mary who saved his spot on the Bake Off.
At least that's what the papers wrote at the time.

JudyCoolibar · 22/09/2016 15:25

Making the show appealing to advertisers generally means finding contestants with personal "stories." We'll have loads of tedious stuff where they try to pull at our heartstrings. Contestants will be chose for their looks or their comedy value.

It also means lots of product placement. They won't choose a challenge because there's anything particularly complex, difficult or interesting about it, but because it's an opportunity to have lots of shots of Bloggins' Mixers, Bluggins' Freezers or Blaggins' flour.

SootSprite · 22/09/2016 15:32

Bake off is fucked now, totally fucked.

No way most fans are going to sit through adverts and product placement just to watch cheating twatbag Paul Hollywood.

Without Mary, Mel and Sue Channel 4 have just got a very expensive white tent.

LunaLoveg00d · 22/09/2016 15:39

Not surprised. Mary Berry IS the BBC.

I would imagine that somewhere in Broadcasting House there is a team of top programme designers trying to devise a new cooking show featuring Mel, Sue and Mary.

I've never watched it but will give it a go on Channel 4. I think Nigella would be perfect for it.

LunaLoveg00d · 22/09/2016 16:25

I dont even notice which channel a programme is on half the time.

I think you'd probably notice the constant ad breaks...

Ratley · 22/09/2016 16:31

I'm so pleased Mary isn't going, I can't stand her I have said all along I would probably love the program but I just think she is awful.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 22/09/2016 16:48

Why on earth shouldn't Paul move to channel 4? What else could he do with the Beeb, other than Strictly? He's fifty years old, still has a son to support, still married (probably why he hasn't done Strictly, press would have a field day re his past affair in the US).
Do not blame him at all and anyone who says they would have done differently in his shoes is a fibber. As for Ruby, she drags that bloke into everything, even when she came out. Bitter, much?

Mummydummy · 22/09/2016 17:47

The head of the production company is a real arse. So I'm glad he got his comeuppance. One puffed up man in a tent. 3 lovely principled women who will get a new show at the BBC. I'm sure they're working it up now. Well done Mary.

Heatherjayne1972 · 22/09/2016 17:54

I imagine these three ladies are contracted to the bbc and can't go even if they wanted to
