are people who like Autumn basically mad?

I know down here in the SE we've been blessed with good weather for the past few weeks, but here we are now on a wet and miserable Monday; kids coming home damp & stroppy from school because the honeymoon period is over & pavements are wet and slippery

The commute will be hellish; it was dark when many set off this morning, its definitely getting dark now and no doubt the trains will start failing due to the wrong kind of leaves on the line so you'll have to shove in with people whose umbrellas will drip down your neck or onto your feet.

Fireplaces are illegal? Where? What kind of madness is this?
Sorry, my mistake. Many places are Smoke Control Areas, which mean you can only burn rubbishy 'smokeless fuel'. Most people live in one.

I love autumn. Love it. The conked picking with the DCs, dark nights when you can light the fire and drink wine earlier, DCs back into their school routine but not far enough into it to be unwell yet, dog unwilling to go for 57 walks a day so content with one brisk sprint at 6am.

I also love summer, because it's hot and I'm like a lizard. I love winter because of the christmas/new year/new coat/jumpers/boots and general merriment thing. I love spring because everything is light and bright. I genuinely think I'm the only person on earth who loves every single season. There's nothing I hate about any of them.

That's madness.

Blueberry234 · 19/09/2016 20:09

Love Autumn my ridiculously light sensitive children sleep longer

DinosaursRoar · 19/09/2016 20:12

WhooooAmI24601 - there's two of us! I love all seasons, it's great living somewhere with such variety so you do get to experience a range through the year, you can roughly guess the month from the weather (and then when we have a hot spell in May or a miserable patch in August we all flap about it as it is wrong - and probably a sign of the end of days)

Another good thing about Autumn, it's dark early and I can legitimately make evening plans to just snuggle up on the sofa in my pjs and watch Only Connect - in the summer, that feels wrong when it's light outside, like I should be making the most of it and doing something more interesting that just MN and TV.

And the TV gets good again!

PeachBellini123 · 19/09/2016 20:17

I usually love summer but being nearly 6 months pregnant in 30 degree heat was hellish - especially on the tube. I'm enjoying the colder weather! Blush

Yika · 19/09/2016 20:20

I love the seasons and I try to enjoy every one to the full as long as we still have them (keep worrying about climate apocalypse).

But the king of the seasons is autumn. I feel almost euphoric when the first mists descend and the smell of autumn leaves and smoke is in the air.

I love damp grey days.

I love the evenings slowly drawing in. And the anticipation, always a new start. The new school year, new activities, everything new, everything ahead, dark nights, twinkling lights and Christmas to look forward to!

Now March on the other hand. There's a month it's hard to love.

MyBreadIsEggy · 19/09/2016 20:24

Autumn is my favourite season Grin My birthday, Halloween, bonfire night, my due date for new baby all fall in Autumn!
I'm glad to see the arse of this ridiculous heat we've been experiencing! I don't do well in heat at the best of times, but being 34 weeks pregnant, the size of Shamu and having a toddler to chase after do not bode well in 30+ degrees!

Willow2016 · 19/09/2016 20:24

I love all the seasons for different reasons.

Autumn colours are stunning, conkers, berries, cozy nights in as it gets darker quicker.

Kicking through leaves with the kids.

Proper dark nights snuggled in bed, not just 'nearly but not quite dark nights' Smile
Halloween Smile

stripeyshoesy · 19/09/2016 20:38

The Pinterest version of Autumn is lovely, crisp walks, marshmallow hot chocolate, smiling rosy cheeked children laughing as they run through russet leaves.
The reality is drizzle, lights on at 4pm, soggy piles of muck, children stuck in front of the telly, and the heating on.

My people Grin (well the sensible ones!)
I love this season, maybe because I am an introvert by nature, so love the cosiness and warmth - the Rayburn is back on and the kitchen has come alive, if it gets cold enough the woodburner is lighted, evenings of reading curled up on the sofa, soups and toast, wellies come out and the convertible gives those great drives in cold brisk air, with the heating on and the heated seats, it is a season of contrasts - lovely...

ShelaghTurner · 20/09/2016 08:26

Maybe that's it. I'm a total introvert and so autumn and winter let me stay at home cosied up where I want to be and don't force me outside because the bloody sun is shining!

TheNaze73 · 20/09/2016 08:38

Autumn for me, is the one that gets all the senses working in unison. Autumn smells nice, it's visually beautiful, I tend to eat tastier food in the Autumn & the sounds on a country autumnal walk are music to my ears.

Spudlet · 20/09/2016 08:45

Soon I will be able to wear my new wellies! I am so excited about them. They are neoprene so should help to keep my toes warm. And they have bees on them! I have been wearing green Hunters for about 15 years (these were old school made in the uk Hunters) and although they lasted well, I got terribly cold feet and I was desperate for snazzier ones. Now they finally died I have moved on to better things. And autumn means I can wear them!

humblesims · 20/09/2016 08:46

hate Autumn. Hate the damp hate the spiders hate the clocks changing hate halloween. hate the garden going over hate idea that its not even winter yet. Love lighting the fire, love wearing layers coats and boots. love walking along the the wild and windy coast. but mostly hate autumn.

Goldenhandshake · 20/09/2016 08:48

I love Autumn and winter aside from the rain. Crisp, cold mornings, crunchy leaves, able to wrap up in jumpers and scarves.

I hate summer in the UK, it's either wet an disappointing or hot to the extreme, people are smelly and sticky, trains unbearable etc.

noeffingidea · 20/09/2016 08:49

I love all the seasons, and I'm definitely not mad. I can't wait for a bit of proper cold weather, and a bit of proper rain would be nice as well.
It's the variety that gets to me. Summer was getting to be a bit boring and I'm really thankful the heatwave seems to be over.

Bountybarsyuk · 20/09/2016 08:51

Able to wrap up in scarves? That's because it's cold and damp, why would anyone want to take aversive action to cover up as it's horrible:)

If you didn't guess, I am not a huge fan of Autumn, it's ok, but I am with the poster on the other page that said November to March is grim in the UK. I don't like Christmas (too much faffing for one day) and hate Jan onwards til Spring appears.

It's the damp and the cold that's so awful, it's just not a pleasant environment and everyone hardly heats their house in the UK, trying to save money and be the most environmentally friendly so if you visit anyone, you have to ask for a blanket or sit in your coat! Not round our house you don't.

honeylulu · 20/09/2016 08:52

Hate autumn even more than winter. At least winter has Christmas and then the days start getting longer to herald the arrival of spring, my favourite of all the seasons.

Hate getting up in the dark, hate wearing coat/jeans /tights/boots. In fact I hate wearing proper shoes and wear flip flops from April to October, even if it rains. Hate mushy leaves everywhere, being cold, spiders everywhere. Moan moan etc.

Bountybarsyuk · 20/09/2016 08:52

And, on MN, the competitive 'my house is colder than yours' threads start. I remember being cold my entire childhood. That's my main memory of my bedroom, freezing in bed, with a measly hot water bottle that ran out by about 2am, and not wanting to move my legs as they would go into a cold bit. Ugh, being cold almost permanently is just nothing to aspire to, really.

goose1964 · 20/09/2016 08:53

I love autumn, it has a smell all of its own.

strawberrybootlace · 20/09/2016 08:54

I love all the seasons except for summer (hate the heat)
Autumn =
introvert so can legitimately stay in
get the slow cooker out
long walks without getting sweaty
jogging without melting
bonfires
kids back to school :-)
love the colourful leaves
garden doesn't need constant attention
conkers
make jams etc that nobody ever eats

BeyondASpecialSnowflake · 20/09/2016 08:57

I agree with dinosaursroar
I love love love every season, for about two months of it Grin

BoxofSnails · 20/09/2016 08:57

I love Autumn - the SAD type symptoms lag by a few weeks for me, so I feel well til around the end of November. I love the seasons of change, smells, sights, feelings. The commute has been just as bad all summer with roadworks - and the out-in-the- dark-back-in-the-dark thing is pretty grim - but I do love this time of year. Like my covering up layers too, boots and jumpers I've missed for a while. Everyone's different though.

Creativemode · 20/09/2016 09:07

I love Autumn. Crisp air, warming food, I love Halloween and Bonfire night, the run up to Christmas.

I do hate the rain and really hate the dark nights. I miss putting the washing on the line.

I think Autumn and Spring are my favourite seasons.
